This study aimed to assess the behavior and stress status of pregnant sows following supplementation with Italian ryegrass silage (IRS) and the impact of feeding the IRS on feeding costs. Six sows with an initial body weight (BW) of 238.6 ± 5.9 kg were allotted to a 6 × 3 Latin square design with a 5-day acclimatization period followed by a 5-day data collection period. A commercial diet was replaced by IRS on a dry matter (DM) basis up to 0%, 9%, and 13% in the control treatment and the two test treatments, respectively. Apart from collecting data on daily feed intake and BW, urine was collected, and video footage was recorded for the last day of each treatment for analysis of urinary cortisol and behavior. There were no leftovers with all diets and nutrient uptake was unaffected (p > 0.05), while BW gain decreased (p < 0.05) to be a limited range from 1% to 3%, with increased inclusion of IRS. Both the behavior of sows and cortisol concentration were unaffected (p > 0.05). Furthermore, it was estimated that feeding 13% DM of IRS would reduce feed costs by 17%. IRS would be acceptable in replacing up to 13% of the commercial diet and cutting feeding costs.

Currently, experiments have been performed in modifying grass and legume to uncover their genetic variability. Such irradiation method could discover the hidden genetic potential of Leucaena leucocephala cv. Tarramba considering its nutritional content, high protein content, and good palatability. This study is a preliminary study of Leucaena leucocephala cv. Tarramba mutant (Ml). This study aims to identify the germination growth of Ml induced by gamma irradiation. The irradiation was performed in the National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia. The germination experiments were conducted for one month in Green House, Central of Excellence (COE), Agriculture Faculty, Hasanuddin University. This study employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with nine treatments and eight replicates. The treatment included gamma irradiation at different doses that consisted of control treatment (without gamma induction); 50Gy; 150Gy; 250Gy; 350Gy; 450Gy; 550Gy; 650Gy; and 750Gy. The observed parameters in this study encompassed plumule length, radicule length, seedling length. Data obtained from observation were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) based on Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% margin error. The results indicated that gamma irradiation significantly affected the germination growth performance, i.e., plumule length, radicule length, and seedling, where the coefficient of variance <20%. Although fluctuation of germination performance value occurred, the plumule length performance tended to increase at the control and re-increase at the dose of 650Gy to 750Gy. Whereas the radicule and seedling length performance relatively increase at the dose of 550Gy to 750Gy. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the dose of 650Gy to 750Gy increases germination growth of Mutant (Ml) Leucaena leucocephala cv. Tarramba. Further research concerning the lethal dose for the forages, DNA genetic analysis and ensuring no toxic effect on livestock would be important to perform.

To clarify a basic knowledge on pesticide application methods against fall armyworm (<i>Spodoptera frugiperda</i>), we investigated the spraying percentage of droplets on leaves and ears covered by water-sensitive paper using several pesticide-spraying methods, including tractor-mounted boom sprayers, handheld electrostatic sprayer, and drone-spraying at various growth stages of maize (<i>Zea mays</i>). In boom spraying methods, the spraying percentages of droplets under the sprayed rate of 200 L per 10 a at the 1st-2nd leaf stage was over than 98%. In the case of 100 L per 10 a at the 5-6th leaf stage, they were less than 50%. For the tractor-mounted boom sprayer, spraying percentages of droplets at the top- and middle-leaves in the 9-10th leaves stage were lower than those at the lower-leaves. On the other hand, the electrostatic sprayer exhibited the opposite results. In drone-spraying at the dough-ripe maize, they were obtained more than 60% in base and middle part of upper- and middle-leaves under the amount of 100 L per 10 a. These results elucidate important information that contributes to our basic knowledge on the selection of pesticide application methods against fall armyworm. It will be necessary to clarify the relationship between the spraying percentage of droplets and the control/exterminating effect.

    Background:
Mixed cropping of forage grasses and legumes can potentially improve the performance of herbivores. However, the feasibility of grasses mixed-cropped with legumes should be examined at different plant densities.

    Aim:
This study aimed to evaluate the growth characters and forage chemical composition in dwarf napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) with Indigofera (Indigofera zollingeriana) grown using alley cropping.

    Methods:
Three densities of dwarf napiergrass with Indigofera, i.e., high density (2 and 1 plants m-2, respectively); medium density (1.33 and 1 plants m-2, respectively); and low density (1 and 1 plants m-2, respectively) were applied under rainfed conditions in Makassar.

    Results:
Plant density significantly affected growth characteristics, such as plant height and tiller density in dwarf napiergrass (p<0.05), and non-significantly affected plant height and branch density (p>0.05) in Indigofera. Plant density did not affect the yielding ability at the first defoliation and annual total of yields (p>0.05), except at the second defoliation when the dry matter production of dwarf napiergrass peaked in the low plant density treatment (p<0.05). In terms of chemical composition, plant density significantly affected fiber concentrations of acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber, which were lowest at low plant densities (p<0.05). The acid detergent lignin and cellulose concentrations tended to be lower at low plant densities, but the differences were not significant (p>0.05).

    Conclusion:
We consider that alley cropping systems for dwarf napiergrass and Indigofera are suitable if low plant densities are employed in the region.

Aim of this study is to evaluate the utilization of cocoa pulp as an
alternative feedstuff source for the performance and blood metabolite
profiles of dry-lot fattening Bali steers. Nine fattening Bali steers were
randomly assigned to experimental diets, composed of three levels of cocoa
pulp of 0, 5 and 10% with reducing levels of milled corn composition at 20,
    14 and 8%, designated as ED0 (control), ED1 and ED2, respectively, under
a completely randomized design. Herbages, consisted of dwarf napiergrass
(Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) at 90% and Indigofera sp. at 10%, were
fed at fresh matter basis 60%, with the experimental diet at 40%. Dry Matter
Intake (DMI) tended to be higher in ED1 than in ED2 without significant
difference (p>0.05) among treatments. The Average Daily Gain (ADG)
    decreased from 0.74 kg/head/day in ED0 to 0.43 kg/head/day in ED2, while
that in ED1 did not decrease from ED0. The effect of experimental diets did
not differ significantly (p>0.05) on body performance, hematological or
biochemical parameters. The results indicated that the experimental diet did
not affect the hematological or biochemical parameters; however, the
feedstuff mixed with cocoa pulp at 5% showed a comparable average daily
gain in fattening Bali steers with control.
