We report on investigation of photon-stimulated desorption processes of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) induced by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiations. Atoms or molecules on PMMA surfaces were to be desorbed and dissociated as a result of absorption of the wavelength-selected VUV photons. Desorbed and dissociated atoms or molecules were then detected by a mass spectrometer which were obtained as a function of the irradiation wavelength. Desorption species with mass number of 28, 29, and 30 were detected at center wavelength of around 160-170 nm, which were identified as CO, CHO, and C2H6, respectively. These photon-stimulated desorption processes of PMMA depend on bond energy or molecular structure.

Tilted Fiber Bragg Grating (TFBG) is expected to be used for such sensors as refractometers, twistsensors, liquid level sensors, chemical sensors and biosensors. We review its fabrication techniques andits refractive index measurements and developed a simplified technique to fabricate TFBG forsimultaneous measurements of the refractive index and the temperatures of liquids. We used acombination of a 4ω Nd:YAG laser and a phase mask, which is simpler than a conventional methodusing a 2ω cw Ar+ laser and a Lloyd mirror interferometer. We calculated TFBG's cladding modes bythe multi-layer method and estimated the temperature coefficient of the water's refractive index to beabout ‒1×10‒4 /K using our fabricated TFBG sensor.

© 2017 SPIE. We have observed an optical gain at the wavelength of 126 nm in an Ar excimer (Ar2 ∗) amplifier by utilizing a femtosecond vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) seed beam tuned at 126 nm. The maximum optical gain value of 1.1 cm -1 with a spatial distribution in the optical-field-induced ionization (OFI) Ar plasma was observed. The plasma diagnosis revealed that the plasma contraction near the plasma amplifier axis together with the plasma expansion was a key issue to observe such a high optical gain value inside the Ar plasma filament. The center axis of the contracted plasma amplifier showed the high electron density more than 10 18 cm -3 even after 100 ns from the plasma production of Ar at 1 MPa. Our OFI plasma/excimer kinetics code reproduced the temporal progress of the optical gain distribution as well as the maximum gain value.

We have demonstrated the photon-stimulated surface spectroscopy using broadband vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emissions from a laser-produced plasma, in which adsorbed atoms or molecules on material surfaces were to be desorbed and dissociated as a result of absorption of the wavelength-selected VUV photons. Desorbed and dissociated atoms or molecules were then detected by a mass spectrometer. Mass spectra of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride samples were obtained as a function of the irradiation wavelength. We have found sufficient characteristic differences of the mass spectra in the irradiation wavelength shorter than 200 nm in each sample. The desorption and dissociation of atoms or molecules from material surfaces depended on bond energy or molecular structure.

We have constructed the ultrashort pulse vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser system with an optical-fieldinducedionization (OFI) Ar2* amplifier. The amplification properties of the OFI Ar2* amplifier wereevaluated. A gain-length product of 0.84 was obtained by using multi-pass amplification with a VUVcavity. The gain-length product was increased up to 4.3 through the use of single-pass amplificationwith a VUV reflector and a hollow fiber. We optimized temporal and spatial overlaps between a VUVseed pulse generated as the 7th harmonic radiation and the OFI Ar2* amplifier. The optimal injectiontime of the seed pulse into the OFI Ar2* amplifier was 20 ns, which agreed with a peak time of Ar2*spontaneous emission. The spatially-resolved amplification of VUV seed pulses at 126 nm was observedin an OFI Ar2* amplifier. The maximum amplification ratio of 3.1 was observed, which corresponded toa gain value of 1.17 cm-1.

SUMMARY We observed that the emission intensity in the extreme and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions using a laser-produced copper-tungsten alloy plasma was 1.3 times higher than when using a pure tungsten plasma. Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser systems for advanced applications such as micro and precise processing and photochemical reactions have been developed. We have been constructing a VUV-MOPA system to generate output energy of sub-mJ with a pulse width of sub-picosecond at the wavelength of 126 nm. A VUV seed pulse, generated by the 7th harmonics of a 882 nm Ti:Sapphire (TiS) laser was amplified by the Ar2* medium generated from an optical-field-induced ionization of Ar plasma pumped by the TiS laser. We achieved an amplification of 126 nm seed pulse by a factor of 2.6. Recently, we introduced a new 800 nm TiS laser. This laser was synchronized with the 882 nm TiS laser and the delay between these outputs was controllable. We also developed a photo-stimulated desorption spectroscopy method for surface analysis. A tunable incoherent VUV radia-tion obtained from a laser induced plasma was irradiated the samples and then desorbed species were analyzed by mass spectroscopy. This method enables analysis without sample heating and damaging.

We have observed the spatially-resolved optical amplification of femtosecond VUV pulses at 126 nm using an OFI Ar 2 * amplifier. The maximum amplification ratio of 2.57 was observed, which corresponded to the optical gain of 0.94 cm -1 . © 2013 IEEE.

We describe the direct measurement of actual transmittance of sodium samples with thickness of a 2 mm and 3 mm in a spectral range > 115 nm, resulting in > 50% transmittance of 3 mm thick solid and liquid sodium samples including transmission of a pair of the windows at the wavelength of 120 nm, giving an extinction coefficient of ~10 -6 to ~10 -7 which represents the sodium with a few cm thickness to be partially transparent for this wavelength. To confirm the measurement, we perform simple imaging experiments by the ultra-violet light passing through a 8 mm-thick sodium sample to illuminate a mesh as an object, resulting in obtaining a clear image. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

We have observed the optical amplification of femtosecond VUV seed pulses at 126 nm by using an optical-fieldinduced ionization (OFI) Ar 2 * amplifier. The maximum amplification ratio of 2.57 was observed. This corresponded to the maximum one-pass gain value of 0.94, which was consistent with that observed in previous experiments. We measured the spatial distribution of the gain region in the OFI Ar plasma by probing the 126 nm VUV seed pulses. The gain region of 220 μm (FWHM) was evaluated after 20 ns of the plasma production, which indicated the average plasma expansion temperature of 1.2 eV. An Ar + density contour measured by using laser interferometry showed consistency with the spatial distribution of the plasma gain region. © 2013 SPIE.

Continuous extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission intensity from a laser-produced plasma in the wavelength between 40 and 200 nm for a copper-tungsten alloy target was observed to be 1.3 times higher than that for a tungsten target. Using the alloy target, low-opacity regions of one material were filled with high-opacity regions of another material. This opacity effect resulted in the increase of a calculated Rosseland mean opacity compared with either of the constituents, which may explain the increase of the EUV emission intensity. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Metallic sodium (Na) was proposed as a transparent material in the vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) spectral range in 1930s and in 1960s. However no clear transmission has ever been demonstrated. In this paper we describe firstly the direct measurement of actual transmittance of a sodium samples in a spectral range longer than 115 nm which corresponds to the shortest transmission wavelength of magnesium fluoride (MgF 2 ) windows, resulting in several tens of % transmittance of a 3 mm-thick solid sodium sample including MgF 2 windows at the wavelength of ∼120 nm. We also find very weak temperature dependency of the transmittance up to 150 degrees centigrade where the solid sample is melted at 97 degrees. The measured transmittance pushes us to make a simple imaging experiment illuminated by the VUV light through a 2-mm thick sodium sample, resulting in obtaining a clear image composed of 100 μm diameter tungsten mesh recorded on a two dimensional Charge Coupled Device detector. The result also opens a way to construct an optical imaging device for objects inside or through a solid or a liquid sodium medium. According to the present experiment, we can make a continuous real time transmission imaging for a liquid sodium sample if we use proper optical setup including an intense continuous VUV source or high repetition rated intense coherent source for holographic data acquisition. Such an experiment opens up a way to perform transmission imaging through or inside a sodium medium for characterization of hydrodynamic and material properties. © 2013 SPIE.

ナトリウムの光学的特性は20世紀前半から調べられてきた。1930年代にWoodにより紫外線域に透過の可能性があることが指摘された。1960年代には米国オークリッジ国立研究所で精力的な研究が行われたが、厚さ1ミクロン以下のコーティングしたナトリウムの透過率を調べたのみで透過率の詳細は明らかになっていない。近年大阪大学の福田らによりその重要性が指摘され、それに基づいて筆者らの研究グループではより厚いサンプルを用いた固体ナトリムの真空紫外域の透過スペクトル特性の詳細を調べた。その結果と期待される応用等について講演する。

We have demonstrated proof-of-principle of an incoherent ArF* emission source with a quasi-point emission geometry using a laser-produced plasma in an Ar/F 2 /He/Ne mixed gas. The VUV emission characteristics, such as the emission size, were dependent on those of the plasma-initiating laser. The average emission power was 10 μW at a repetition rate of 10 Hz at 193 nm. The average power conversion efficiency of the 193-nm emission from the plasma-initiating Nd:YAG laser was 6.3×10 -6 . The average emission power at 193 nm was proportional to that of the plasma-initiating laser, indicating the scaling of the emission source. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

We observed that the emission intensity in extreme and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions using a laser-produced copper tungsten alloy plasma was 1.3 times higher than that using a pure tungsten plasma. We proposed a novel scheme for film deposition based on the pulsed laser deposition. We supply the liquid flow as target in and pulsed laser was irradiated it. Ablated species from the liquid-target was deposited on the substrate. In this method we can always obtain the constant target status and we can keep film quality as good for long time. First, we demonstrate to fabricate SnO x film using SnO 2 colloidal solution. We are now trying to fabricate a hydroxyapatite films suing a colloidal hydroxyapatite solution.

We report optical amplification of Ar* 2 at 126nm, pumped by optical-field-induced ionization (OFI) created by an infrared high-intensity laser. A gain-length product of 0.84 was obtained by using multipass amplification with a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) cavity. The gain-length product was increased up to 4.3 through the use of single-pass amplification with a VUV reflector and a hollow 5:0 cm-long fiber. Similar small signal gain coefficients of 0.84 and 0:86cm?1 were obtained in two different experiments, in which OFI Ar plasma gain media were produced in free space filled with Ar and inside an Ar-filled hollow fiber. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

We have developed an autocorrelator utilizing multiphoton ionization of rare gases as a nonlinear medium to evaluate the pulse width of a femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser at 882 nm. The autocorrelation width of 171 fs (FWHM) was evaluated by the autocorrelator utilizing nine-photon ionization of Ar. By using the ninth-order correlation factor of 1.06, the actual pulse width of 161 fs (FWHM) was determined, which was consistent to that of 165 fs (FWHM) measured with a two-photon autocorrelator. The autocorrelation measurement utilizing the multiphoton ionization of Ar should be applied to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) ultrashort pulses at 126 nm, since neutral Ar atoms will be ionized by two-photon absorption. This method has a potential to become a versatile autocorrelator that characterizes femtosecond laser pulse widths in the wide spectral range between IR and VUV. © 2011 SPIE.

We developed a novel surface analysis system using a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons. When the VUV photons were irradiated on the material surface, surface desorption was stimulated. The desorbed species were analyzed by the mass analyzer. First, we studied the decomposition process excited by VUV excimer lamps. We found that the different photon energy resulted in the different time dependence of the fragment detection even if the contamination had similar chemical construction. It suggested that the tracing the decomposition process We developed an analyzing system, called "photo-stimulated desorption mass spectrometer (PSD)". A broadband VUV radiation for surface desorption was obtained from the Ar plasma excited by a Q-SW Nd:YAG laser. We selected and scanned wavelength by a monochromator. The desorbed species were analyzed by the quadrupole mass analyzer. We scanned the VUV wavelength and obtained the mass data. This PSD system enables us to analyze without damage on the sample.

We have observed the optical amplification of the Ar 2 * excimer at 126 nm pumped by optical-field-induced ionization (OFI) caused by an infrared high-intensity laser. We have evaluated similar small signal gain coefficients of approximately 1.0 cm -1 in two different experiments, where OFI Ar plasmas as gain media were produced in free space filled with Ar and inside an Ar-filled hollow fiber. This indicates that the function of a hollow fiber was to guide the infrared excitation laser and VUV Ar 2 * emissions, and not to regulate the OFI plasma. Despite the gain coefficient value at 126 nm, the laser oscillation has not been observed. This was limited by the optical quality of available state-of-the-art vacuum ultraviolet optics. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

We have developed intense vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation sources for advanced material processing, such as photochemical surface reactions and precise processing on a nanometer scale. We have constructed a new VUV laser system to generate sub-picosecond pulses at the wavelength of 126 nm. A seed VUV pulse was generated in Xe as the 7th harmonic of a 882-nm Ti:sapphire laser. The optimum conversion was achieved at the pressure of 1.2 Torr. The seed pulse will be amplified by the Ar 2 * media generated by an optical-field-induced ionization Ar plasma produced by the Ti:sapphire laser. We have obtained a gain coefficient of g=0.16 cm -1 . Our developing system will provide VUV ultra-short pulses with sub-μJ energy at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

We have improved the accuracy of the laser separation of stems from raisin samples on the basis of the degree of polarization of scattered light from raisins and stems. The specular reflection from wet raisins was minimized by regulating the degree of polarization of their scattered emissions. Wet and dry raisins were therefore judged as the same samples. Using these polarization characteristics, wet or dry raisins were separated from their stems in our laser inspection system. The detection error was reduced from 25 to 7% in our system. © 2010 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

We report the optical amplification characteristics of an optical-field-induced-ionization (OFI) Ar 2 * excimer vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) amplifier at 126 nm by using two experimental approaches. We have observed the amplification of OFI Ar 2 * excimer emission and evaluated the gain length product of 1.0 by using an optical cavity. We also achieved the gain length product of 5.0 by measuring the one pass amplification inside a hollow fiber with the length of 5 cm. The use of a hollow fiber was effective to guide the VUV emission and to extend a gain length. A small signal gain coefficient of 1.0 cm -1 was evaluated in both experimental approaches. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Subpicosecond vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pulses at the wavelength of 126 nm have been generated in rare gases as a result of the 7th harmonic radiation of a subpicosecond Ti:Sapphire laser oscillating at 882 nm. The VUV harmonic intensity was optimized in Xe at the pressure of 1.2 Torr. The behavior of the harmonic emission was qualitatively reproduced by the classical nonlinear optics. The increase of the harmonic intensity was limited by multiphoton ionization of Xe. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have been developing an ultra-short-pulsed vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser system for advanced applications such as micro and precise processing and photochemical reactions. We propose and construct a new VUV laser system to generate output energy of sub-mJ with a pulse width of sub-picosecond at the wavelength of 126 nm. A VUV seed pulse was generated in Xe gas at the pressure of 1.2 Torr with high conversion efficiency as the 7th harmonics of a 882 nm Ti:Sapphire laser. The Ar* 2 amplification medium was generated in an optical-field-induced ionized Ar plasma pumped by another 800 nm Ti:Sapphire laser with an amplification factor of 400. VUV output at 1 μJ in the sub-picosecond pulse will be obtained at a repetition rate of 1 kHz, leading to an average power of 1 mW at 126 nm. It will be useful VUV coherent source for applications of precise and micro laser processing.

We have observed the photo-chemical reaction process of organic molecules in gas phase induced by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. We chose hydrocarbons that contain five carbons in a molecule as samples. To observe the wavelength dependence, three kinds of excimer lamps (Ar 2 *-126 nm, Kr 2 *-147 nm and Xe 2 *-172 nm) were used as light sources of the VUV radiation. Vaporized organic molecular compounds were irradiated by the VUV at a pressure of 12 Pa and detected by means of mass spectrometry. Change of the mass spectra with the irradiation period was measured. As a result, we found that different reaction rates were observed for the different compounds. In particular, 1-pentene and cyclopentane, which have the same molecular weight, have very different decomposition speeds for the irradiation of 172-nm radiation. The facts observed in this work are considered to be very promising for developing a technique to distinguish the targeted compound from others that have similar structures. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. In vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectral region, coherent light sources are being thus in high demand for advanced precise and microscopic processing. A sub-picosecond VUV light source at 126 nm has been produced by the nonlinear wavelength up-conversion of a near infrared femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser at 882 nm in rare gases. We obtained the maximum output of the 7 th harmonic at 126 nm in Xe at the pressure of around 2 Torr. The 126 nm beam will be amplified by an optical-field-ionization produced Ar 2 * medium and then high-power sub-picosecond VUV pulses will be obtained. © 2009 SPIE.

Characteristics of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and debris emissions as well as debris reduction have been investigated for a laser-produced plasma (LPP) EUV source by using a colloidal/liquid jet target containing tin dioxide nanoparticles and tin chloride. The amount of deposited debris on a silicon witness plate was determined by a total laser energy irradiated onto a target. Double-pulse laser irradiation was effective for improving the EUV conversion efficiency as a result of plasma regulation. It was, however, not effective for reducing the deposited debris from a colloidal target with nanoparticles. In situ low-temperature heating of the witness plate was effective to reduce the amount of deposited debris. Room-temperature photon processing using an incoherent vacuum ultraviolet excimer lamp at 126 nm deoxidized a deposited tin oxide layer. In addition to these active debris reduction methods, the use of a tin chloride liquid target at a certain concentration passively reduced the amount of deposited debris as a result of production of chlorine atoms that sputtered and/or etched deposition. The EUV CE of more than 1% was observed from a tin chloride target by using double-pulse laser irradiation. ©2009 SPIE.

We have demonstrated an OFI Ar2* excimer VUV amplifier at 126 nm pumped by a high-intensity laser in the table top size. We observed the Ar2* excimer emission centered at 126 nm with the spectral bandwidth of 10 nm (FWHM), which was produced in the OFI plasma. Significant amplification was observed inside the OFI Ar2* excimer as a result of the optical feedback provided by a VUV reflector. The gain-length product of 5.6 was observed at the Ar pressure of 11 atm. The population inversion density on the order of 1017 cm-3 was evaluated inside the OFI plasma, which would be sufficient for the amplification of a subpicosecond VUV pulse at 126 nm produced by the harmonic generation. © 2009 SPIE.

We realized a laser-plasma EUV target, which satisfied the high EUV CE and the debris suppression simultaneously by using low-concentration liquid jet/droplet targets containing tin oxides and chlorides. Plasma regulation by double pulse irradiation improved the EUV CE. In terms of the debris emissions, we reduced the amount of the deposited tin oxide by applying in situ heat and high-energy photons onto a witness plate. These active debris suppression resulted in the decrease of the deposition rate and deoxidation of the debris, respectively. The use of tin chloride liquid target also realized a well-balanced debris behavior, where deposited debris was cleaned by chlorine atoms or ions, resulting in an approximately zero deposition rate. ©2009 SPIE.

We have demonstrated an argon excimer vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) amplifier at 126 nm by using the optical-field induced ionization (OFI) of argon. The gain-length product of 5.6 was achieved as a result of the optical feedback inside the amplifier with a VUV mirror. Plasma self-channeling caused by the high-intensity pump laser was simultaneously observed when the maximum gain-length product was observed. We have also optimized the output power of a subpicosecond VUV seed beam at 126 nm produced in low-pressure rare-gases as a result of the seventh harmonic nonlinear wavelength conversion of a Ti:Sapphire laser at 882 nm. © 2009 SPIE.

We have generated vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pulses at 126 nm by nonlinear wavelength conversion of a subpicosecond Ti:Sapphire laser pulse at 882nm. We have been measuring autocorrelation of the VUV coherent emission by multiphoton ionization of rare gases. Two divided VUV beams in a Michelson interferometer were overlapped to produce multiphoton ionization in a rare gas, which led to autocorrelation of subpicosecond VUV pulses.

Debris characteristics and its reduction have been investigated for a laser-produced plasma (LPP) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) source using a colloidal jet target containing tin dioxide nano-particles. Dominant deposited debris on a witness plate was found to have a form of oxidized tin (SnO x ) originated from nano-particles. Quantitative debris amounts were determined by total laser energy irradiated onto a target, not by laser irradiation modes, such as single or double pulse irradiation. In-situ low-temperature (100 °C) heating of a plate was effective to reduce the deposited debris amount, since colloidal debris was easily vaporized by the heat. Another approach to remove the deposited debris was roomtemperature photon processing using incoherent vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission at 126 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis has shown that the deposited SnOx debris layer was deoxidized by the 126 nm VUV photon energy.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a biocompatibility material. We have successfully obtained the nano-particles of hydroxyapatite by the underwater laser ablation. A sintered HAp ceramics target was made of commercially available HAp powder and it was placed in the purified water. The focused KrF excimer laser outputs were irradiated on the target surface at the fluence from 7 J/cm 2 to 23 J/cm 2 at the repetition rate of 100 Hz. We found that the amount of the particles increased in proportional to the laser fluence. However, the rate of content of sub-micron particles was became larger at the lower laser fluence. The particles made by 7J/cm 2 laser ablation were dispersing in the water for 12 hours after stopping the laser irradiation.

We have demonstrated auto-cleaning of deposited tin debris produced in a laser-plasma extreme ultraviolet (EUV) source by using a liquid jet target containing tin chloride solution. The use of double laser pulse irradiation improved the EUV conversion efficiency of 1.1%, which was 3.3 times as large as that obtained with single laser pulse irradiation. At an appropriate concentration of tin chloride, the amount of deposited debris was balanced out with that of sputtered and/or etched debris, resulting in a thickness of deposited debris less than 1 nm after 40∈000 laser pulse irradiations. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

We have demonstrated the generation of 5 fs, 0.5 TW pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate using a pulse compression technique in a hollow fiber with a pressure gradient. Owing to the excellent beam quality by passing through the hollow fiber, the beam after pulse compression could be focused to a nearly diffraction-limited spot size. We obtained for the first time a peak intensity as high as 5×10 18 W/cm 2 in the 2-cycle regime. ©2008 Optical Society of America.

Debris characteristics and their reduction have been investigated for a laser-produced plasma extreme ultraviolet source by using a colloidal jet target containing tin dioxide nanoparticles. The amounts of deposited debris on a witness plate were determined by total laser energy irradiated onto a target. In situ low-temperature (100 °C) heating of a plate was effective to reduce the amounts of deposited debris, since colloidal debris was easily vaporized by the heat. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We have been developing an ultrashort-pulse high-intensity vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser. Ultrashort VUV pulses at 126 nm have been produced in rare-gases by nonlinear wavelength conversion of an infrared Ti:sapphire laser at 882 nm. This pulse will be amplified inside an Ar 2 * amplifier excited by optical-field-induced ionization electrons. The amplification characteristics of the Ar 2 * amplifier has been improved by plasma channeling induced by a high-intensity plasma-initiating laser.

We have developed a beam stabilization system for high-power femtosecond lasers operating at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The beam pointing at a hollow fiber input was stabilized to within 1 μm rms and the fluctuations of the broadened spectra and power were significantly improved. This technique enables us to increase the input power to a hollow fiber for intense few-cycle pulse generation. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Characteristics of emitted particles from a laser-produced tin plasma using a colloidal tin dioxide nano-particle jet target were investigated. By using double laser pulses, the EUV conversion efficiency at 13.5 nm and the ion energy were simultaneously regulated. Deposited amount of tin oxide was not well controlled, however.

We evaluated amplification characteristics of the nanosecond vacuum ultraviolet argon excimer emission at 126 nm, whose kinetics was initiated by high-intensity femtosecond laser-produced electrons. Subpicosecond 126 nm emissions were produced simultaneously as a result of the nonlinear wavelength conversion, which will be amplified in the amplifier.

We have been developing high intensity vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser system for advanced applications such as micro and precise processing and photochemical reactions. We propose and construct a new VUV laser system to generate an output energy of sub mJ with a pulse width of subpicosecond at the wavelength of 126nm. A seed pulse was generated in Xe as the 7th harmonics of a 882 nm Ti:sapphire laser, and the Ar 2 * amplifier media were generated in an optical-field-induced ionization Ar plasma produced by another 785 nm Ti:sapphire laser. The VUV radiation should be further amplified in a discharge-pumped Ar 2 * amplifier, which is under construction.

We investigated the effective technique for debris suppression of a laser-produced tin plasma using a colloidal tin dioxide jet target, as well as the EUV emission and debris characteristics of the target. By using double pulse laser irradiation with an optimum delay of 100 ns, the EUV conversion efficiency of 1.2% at 13.5 nm was observed. The peak energy and intensity of ionic debris were simultaneously reduced by the double laser pulse irradiation. The peak kinetic energy of the singly-ionized tin ion was reduced from 9 to 3 keV, when an expanding low-density preplasma was produced. The dominant debris from a laser-produced tin plasma, which was deposited on a witness plate, was found to be oxidized tin (SnO x ). By heating a witness plate at 100 °C, the deposited debris amount decreased to approximately one third.

We observed extreme ultraviolet (XUV) continuum radiation generated by using a sub-10-fs two-color pulse. When a laser field consisting of fundamental and its second harmonic pulses with parallel polarization was applied to high-order harmonic generation in argon, a continuum spectrum centered at 30 nm was obtained with an energy as high as 10 nJ. The broadband radiation indicates the possibility of generating powerful single attosecond pulses in the XUV region. © 2007 Springer-Verlag New York.

We present a study on the optimization of multi-mJ spectral broadening in neon-filled hollow fibers using pressure gradients. It is found that the intensity of the laser pulse at the entrance of the hollow fiber should be below or at the level where multi-photon ionization (MPI) starts to occur. If the intensity is higher than the threshold value for MPI, ionization can significantly reduce the throughput efficiency. The extension of the scheme to a terawatt power level is also addressed. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.

We have demonstrated suppression of suprathermal ions from a colloidal microjet target plasma containing tin-dioxide (Sn O2) nanoparticles irradiated by double laser pulses. We observed a significant decrease of the tin and oxygen ion signals in the charged-state-separated energy spectra when double laser pulses were irradiated. The peak energy of the singly ionized tin ions decreased from 9 to 3 keV when a preplasma was produced. The decrease in the ion energy, considered as debris suppression, is attributed to the interaction between an expanding low-density preplasma and a main laser pulse. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.

We investigated the effective technique for debris suppression of a laser-produced tin plasma using a colloidal tin dioxide jet target, as well as the EUV emission and debris characteristics of the target. By using double pulse laser irradiation with an optimum delay of 100 ns, the EUV conversion efficiency of 1.2% at 13.5 nm was observed. The peak energy and intensity of ionic debris were simultaneously reduced by the double laser pulse irradiation. The peak kinetic energy of the singly-ionized tin ion was reduced from 9 to 3 keV, when an expanding low-density preplasma was produced. The dominant debris from a laser-produced tin plasma, which was deposited on a witness plate, was found to be oxidized tin (SnO ). By heating a witness plate at 100 °C, the deposited debris amount decreased to approximately one third. x

We have been developing high intensity vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser system for advanced applications such as micro and precise processing and photochemical reactions. We propose and construct a new VUV laser system to generate an output energy of sub mJ with a pulse width of subpicosecond at the wavelength of 126nm. A seed pulse was generated in Xe as the 7th harmonics of a 882 nm Ti:sapphire laser, and the Ar * amplifier media were generated in an optical-field-induced ionization Ar plasma produced by another 785 nm Ti:sapphire laser. The VUV radiation should be further amplified in a discharge-pumped Ar * amplifier, which is under construction. 2 2

We evaluated amplification characteristics of the nanosecond vacuum ultraviolet argon excimer emission at 126 nm, whose kinetics was initiated by high-intensity femtosecond laser-produced electrons. Subpicosecond 126 nm emissions were produced simultaneously as a result of the nonlinear wavelength conversion, which will be amplified in the amplifier. © CLEO Pacific Rim 2007.

We have developed a beam stabilization system for a high-power femtosecond laser operating at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The beam position at a hollow fiber input was stabilized to within ± 1 um rms and the output fluctuation was significantly improved. © CLEO Pacific Rim 2007.

We have proposed and demonstrated a novel approach for generating high-energy extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) continuum radiation. When a two-color laser field consisting of a sub-10-fs fundamental and its parallel-polarized second harmonic was applied to high-order harmonic generation in argon, a continuum spectrum centered at 30 nm was successfully obtained with an energy as high as 10 nJ. This broadband emission indicates the possibility of generating intense single attosecond pulses in the XUV region. ©2006 Optical Society of America.

High-order harmonic generation is demonstrated to provide a sensitive way for an extensive study of dynamic processes in the field-free alignment of strong-field-induced molecular rotational wave packets. The time-dependent harmonic signal observed from field-free-aligned N2, O2, and CO2 has been found to include two sets of beat frequency for pairs of coherently populated rotational states. One of them is the well-known frequency component characterizing the field-free alignment of molecules, and the other is ascribed to the beat that arises from coherence embedded in the wave packet. We discuss the effect of each frequency component on the revival signal observed with the harmonic generation. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

We report high-order harmonic generation from field-free aligning molecules, of which time-dependent signals represent the revival structure of a rotational wave packet formed by intense fs laser pulses. The harmonic signals from aligned N2, O2and CO2molecules represent the characteristic behaviors depending on the molecular structures.

We report characteristic changes in reflectivity of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) films following irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses at laser fluence around the ablation threshold, where we have observed the formation of periodic nanostructure on the film surface and the modification of bonding structure from DLC to glassy carbon in our recent experiments. The experimental results have shown that the reflectivity change should be a reliable measure to monitor the experimental condition to produce the structural changes, being closely associated with the fundamental physical process to induce these phenomena.

We report a sensitive method using high-order harmonic generation to detect revival structures in fs-laser-induced, field free alignment of a molecular rotational wave packet. The revival structure is directly observed on the time-dependent harmonic signal produced with the pump-probe technique. The harmonic signals for N2and O2represent the characteristic behaviors depending on the molecular structure.

Pump and probe fs-laser pulses with a time delay were focused collinearly into a pulsed N2gas jet, so that the pump pulse induces alignment of a ground-state rotational wave packet, and the delayed probe pulse produces harmonic radiation from the aligning molecules. The harmonic signal observed as a function of time delay has clearly demonstrated a typical time-dependent revival structure in the field-free alignment of molecules.

In this paper we have proposed a new excitation method to demonstrate a practical Ar/sub 2/* laser using a high intensity ultrashort pulse laser. A high intensity laser produced electrons will be utilized to initiate the Ar/sub 2/* production kinetics. We have observed a nonlinear increase of the Ar/sub 2/* emission intensity at 126 nm by changing the hollow fiber length. A small signal gain of 0.05 cm/sup -1/ was evaluated at 126 nm. Kinetic analysis revealed that the high intensity laser produced electrons via optical field ionization process actually initiated the Ar/sub 2/* production processes. This result is the first observation of the gain at 126 nm pumped by a compact device other than electron beam machine and will lead to the stimulated emission at 126 nm with a repetition rate of 10 Hz. © 2003 IEEE.

We have observed Ar 2 * emission at 126 nm by use of a high intensity laser pulse as an excitation source. Kinetic analysis revealed that high-intensity laser-produced electrons via optical field induced ionization (OFI) process initiated the Ar 2 * production kinetics. Ar 2 * production kinetics initiated by OFI electrons was mainly governed by the three-body association process, which was analogous to the case of electron beam excitation. The use of a hollow fiber controlled propagation characteristics of a high intensity laser pulse in a high-pressure gas, leading to the increase of the excimer emission intensity.

The observing of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) argon excimer based on an ultrashort-pulse high-intensity laser propagation was investigated. The laser propagation under high pressure conditions resulted in the observing of argon emission at 126 nm. In regard with it, the optical-field-induced ionization (OFI) process that initiated argon formation kinetics was also discussed.

We have developed a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopic system using a laser-produced plasma. Laser-produced rare gas plasma was initiated by a 10 Hz Q-switched YAG laser at the focused intensity of $10^{11}$ W/cm2. Among three different rare gas plasma emissions (He, Ne, and Ar), argon plasma was characterized by broad continuum emission with an integrated emission power of 8.4 kW in the VUV spectral region. The pulse width of the VUV emission of 62 ns (Full width at half maximum), which was governed by recombination processes in the plasma, determined the temporal resolution. Using this emission source, we have measured VUV transmission spectra of Nd3+:LaF3 crystal, which was a potential laser medium in the VUV. The transmission peak of the crystal coincided with the reported laser oscillation wavelength at 174 nm. The absorption coefficient at the wavelength was measured to be 0.7 cm-1.

We report on the observation of [Formula Presented] emission at 126 nm by use of a hollow fiber to guide the high-intensity laser propagation in high-pressure Ar. A small-signal gain coefficient of [Formula Presented] was measured at 126 nm by this method. The increase of the [Formula Presented] emission intensity was measured to be [Formula Presented] with an increase of the fiber length up to 50 cm. Kinetic analysis revealed that the [Formula Presented] production processes were initiated by the electrons produced by the high-intensity laser through an optical-field-induced ionization (OFI) process. A rapid conductive cooling of the OFI electrons is favorable to initiate the [Formula Presented] formation kinetics more efficiently. This high-density cold plasma production method should be applicable for other vacuum ultraviolet rare-gas excimer lasers. © 2003 The American Physical Society.

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) continua emitted from a laser-produced plasma have been utilized for the spectroscopy of a solid state laser material. An absorption spectrum of 0.1%Nd:LaF 3 has been measured by use of the continuum emission. The minimum absorption coefficient of 1.4 cm -1 was evaluated at 174 nm.
