In this paper, a Kalman canonical decomposition of finite-dimensional linear timevarying continuous-time systems is revisited. Two types of Kalman canonical decompositions are considered; one is collectively dubbed the intervalwise Kalman canonical decomposition and the other is collectively dubbed the global Kalman canonical decomposition. Each type is classified into subtypes resulting from variants of controllabilities (i.e., controllability, reachability, and influenceability) and observabilities (i.e., observability, determinability, and visibility). This paper first investigates the invariance properties of subspaces resulting from variants of controllabilities and observabilities. This paper then gives a self-contained exposition of each Kalman canonical decomposition on an interval. The main result is to prove the existence of intervals on each of which each Kalman canonical decomposition exists. Moreover, the relations among different Kalman canonical decompositions are extensively studied and the inconsistency between the works by Youla and Weiss is resolved. © 2014 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Many papers about wireless power transfer use resonant phenomena. In general if input frequency is adjusted to the resonant frequency, the amplitude of current or voltage will be maximal. Since the power of resistive load is determined by its current or voltage, the power will be maximal at the resonance. As for wireless power transfer, it is one of significant specifications to transfer power as much as possible. Then it is natural to try to maximize transmitted power with resonant phenomena. On the other hand, efficiency is another significant specification on wireless power transfer. However efficiency is defined as a ratio with two different powers, and it cannot be concluded that efficiency is always maximal when either power is maximal. Therefore efficiency has no straightforward relation with resonance in contrast with the relation between resonance and power. In this paper, we show an example which cannot realize the maximal efficiency, although resonant phenomena are caused and discuss why the situation is caused. An analytical method for wireless power transfer is clarified and how to choose an optimal frequency is scrutinized. The power of transmitting and receiving sides and efficiency are calculated by using mathematical models, e.g. a state equation, a transfer function.

Wireless power transmission is based on electromagnetical phenomenon between two separate coils. In order to transfer power from one to the other, we have to cause a time-varying current along one coil. Many of conventional wireless power transmission systems suppose a sinusoidal current of the coil. One reason for it could be the convenience that we have a sinusoidal power source as the industry standard. If we can use a power source which generates many types of wave form, we do not necessarily use the sinusoidal wave. In this study, we propose to add a feedback signal on a sinusoidal signal, that is, we propose to utilize a non-sinusoidal input. We will evaluate the sinusoidal wave and non-sinusoidal wave from the viewpoint of transmission power and efficiency to secondary side.

© IFAC. This note proposes a new approach to computing the Kalman canonical decomposition of finite-dimensional linear periodic continuous-time systems by extending the Floquet theory. Controllable and observable subspaces are characterized by factorizing the monodromy matrix. Then, the conditions for the existence of several periodic Kalman canonical decompositions are extensively studied. The relations to the Floquet factorization, the Floquet-like factorization, and the period-specific realization are also discussed.

Conventional researches onWireless Power Transmission systems use experimental or numerical method to analyze the systems. However, the situation will be better if symbolic method is available. This paper develops a software which generates a state equation directly from schematics. The software helps engineers that design circuits and obtain characteristics of circuits to analyze the behavior of circuits with circuit parameters by symbolic computing. Our software also provides various perspectives of the system with circuit parameters.

In this paper, a Kalman canonical decomposition of finite-dimensional linear periodic continuous-time systems is considered. This paper firstly investigates the invariance properties of the controllable subspace and the observable subspace. This paper then illustrates a counterexample to the existence of the periodic Kalman canonical decomposition in a typical setting, where the coefficients are restricted to be real-valued and the period of the transformed system is restricted to be the same as the given system. Motivated by this counterexample, this paper gives a self-contained exposition of the periodic Kalman canonical decomposition in real-valued coefficients. © 2013 AACC American Automatic Control Council.

It is a well-known fact that a weighting pattern matrix has a periodic realization if and only if the matrix is separable and periodic. This fact, however, does not cope with a reasonable question of period-specific realization problem: for a given weighting pattern matrix and a given positive real number, find a periodic realization corresponding to the given matrix and with a period equal to the given number. This paper answers the question by showing that the period-specific realization problem has a solution if and only if the given weighting pattern matrix is separable and has a period equal to the given positive real number. To this end, two types of period-specific realizations are constructed. One is with a constant A-matrix whose dimension is not necessarily minimal among all possible period-specific realizations. The other is with a non-constant and periodically time-varying A-matrix whose dimension turned out minimal among all possible period-specific realizations. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
