This paper proposes an explicit formula for designing a periodic state feedback control law for a class of linear periodic continuous-time systems. The proposed control law sufficiently raises the frequency of a periodic coefficient matrix of a resultant closed-loop system so that the closed-loop system is exponentially stabilized, which is proved by introducing an averaging technique with quantitative evaluation. This enables closed-loop characteristic multipliers to converge to desired place, which are arbitrarily specified by the pole placement design for an averaged linear time-invariant system. The effectiveness of the proposed control law is demonstrated in a numerical example of attitude control of small satellites with magnetic actuator.

This paper presents a geometric interpretation of stabilizability of linear periodic continuous-time systems, which is an extension of the well-known geometric approach for linear time-invariant systems. Although the existence of linear periodic state feedback with the same period of the system has been discussed in the conventional results, we admit a broader class and discuss a periodic state feedback with a twice period of a system (briefly double periodic state feedback) in order to derive a stabilizability condition in the coordinate free setting. For this end, stable, unstable and reachable subspaces in the state space for linear periodic systems are introduced. It will be shown that those subspaces are spanned by a smooth and doubly periodic basis and are invariant with respect to the fundamental solution. With these notions, it will be proven that a linear periodic system is stabilizable by doubly periodic state feedback if and only if the unstable subspace is contained in the reachable subspace, which is a well-known fact for linear time-invariant case.

This paper presents a new insight into controllability for linear periodic continuous-time systems. A number of necessary and sufficient conditions for linear periodic systems to be controllable have been proposed in mutually different forms. However, it is common for these conditions to be described in terms of input coefficients and fundamental solution matrices or transition matrices of the systems. On the other hand, more convenient controllability criterions such as PBH test are available for linear time-invariant systems: the criterions can be described by system matrices in the state-space representations instead of fundamental solution matrices. The purpose of this paper is to derive a controllability criterion in terms of system matrices for linear periodic systems in parallel with the case of linear time-invariant systems. To be precise, this paper proves the existence of <I>particular</I> state-space representations where controllability can be checked directly through system matrices.

This paper proposes a novel approach for designing a periodic state feedback control law for a class of continuous-time linear periodic systems. The control law generates the sufficiently high frequency sinusoidal in the coefficient of the closed loop systems, then the closed loop solution is shown to be exponentially stable based on the averaging method. It is also shown that the closed loop solution is approximated by the solution of the average system. © 2005 IEEE.
