This study illustrated body temperature (Tb) fluctuation during reproduction and discussed the effectiveness of measuring Tb for predicting the reproductive profile of female Apodemus speciosus both under laboratory and field conditions. Tb fluctuation was monitored for four breeding events in the laboratory and for three in the field. Individual variation in Tb fluctuation during reproduction was larger in the field than in the laboratory, while its temporal pattern was clearer in the field than in the laboratory. Tb fluctuating patterns according to the progress of the reproductive stage were similar between the laboratory and the field. Daily mean Tb increased after the start of pregnancy, decreased during late pregnancy, rapidly increased after parturition, and remained higher through the lactation period. In particular, the following three characteristics should be apparent indices of parturition: increase of daily mean Tb and daily minimum Tb in early pregnancy, decrease of daily max Tb and daily mean Tb in late pregnancy, and increase of daily max Tb at the day of parturition. These results indicate that implanting small-sized loggers enables us to obtain a representative pattern of Tb fluctuation and to predict the reproductive profile of female A. speciosus, both under laboratory and field conditions.

On a livestock farm where antimicrobial administration and its history had been managed for prudent use of antimicrobials, we surveyed antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from cow feces and the surrounding environment (i.e., rat and crow feces, and water samples from a drainage pit and wastewater processing tank) every month for 1 year. Two strains (1.7%) in cow feces were resistant to tetracycline, whereas all other strains were susceptible to all other antimicrobials. Among 136 strains isolated from cows and wild animals, only one ampicillin-resistant strain was identified. The antibiotic resistance rate in the drainage from the barn was 8.3% (10/120), and all strains showed susceptibility for 8 months of the year. Tetracycline resistance was common in all resistant strains isolated from animal feces and water samples; all tetracycline-resistant strains carried tetA. These results strongly support the proper use and management of antibiotics on farms to minimize the outbreak and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Wild horses called "Misaki-uma"are inhabited Cape Toi in the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan. Although wild horse, it needs health care. It is a difficult task for aging management association members to monitor the vast habitat range of horses and to identify individual during routine management. In addition, the current methods of individual identification because of contact with horses or to requiring specialized knowledge, ordinary people cannot perform it. In this paper we propose a method for automatic individual identification of wild horses without contact using an RGB camera.

Cow identification has become important in recent years due to outbreaks of diseases such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Conventional identification methods available are not efficient, affordable, non-invasive, and cost- effective. Among them, some methods are based on biological markers, such as muzzle point matching and facial recognition. Facial images are the most common biometric characteristics used by humans to identify individuals, and they have received much attention. In this study, we used RGB camera to identify individual cow by their faces and confirmed the effectiveness of this method.

Lameness is one of the major welfare concerns in the modern dairy industry. In addition, lameness makes severe health and economic problems causing losses in milk production. Although there has a sizable amount of methods, it remains some worthwhile open problems. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an intelligent method for detecting the lameness of dairy cow by establishing a visual monitoring system on the laneways after milking process. We employ a technique of Mask-RCNN for cow region extraction and utilize features based on head bob patterns. Our real-life experimental results show that the proposed method has detection accuracy of 95.5% on cow's region extraction and can classify 80% of the lameness levels correctly.

The objective of this study was to investigate the improvement of production efficiency in Japanese Black cattle by determining its metabolic profiles during a shortened fattening period and by revealing the correlations among the profiles and carcass traits. Data were collected from 172 Japanese Black steers that were part of the progeny testing scheme at the Livestock Improvement Association of Miyazaki. A significant increase was observed in the α-tocopherol, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, total cholesterol and blood urea nitrogen levels, from 8 to 18 months of age, the finishing period. On the other hand, at 18 months of age, creatine phosphokinase showed a significant negative correlation with rib thickness and negative correlations with other carcass traits except for beef marbling score, although not significant. The least square mean of the sire candidates for creatinine activity at 11 months of age had a positive correlation with longissimus muscle area and carcass yield estimate. In our study, metabolic profiles of the Japanese Black steers during the short fattening period, which has not been reported so far, have been determined. Our results suggest that there is a genetic association between plasma α-tocopherol or creatinine levels and the increase in muscle or meat.
