    It is essential to increase the production of foods to meet the increasing future food demand, but this should be done in an environmentally sustainable manner. Integrated crop-livestock systems have been suggested to balance the reduction of environmental impacts and the increase in food production. Here we assessed and compared the environmental impacts of specialized (SPC) and integrated (ITG) rice and beef production systems in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, using a life-cycle assessment (LCA). The productions of rice and beef are separated in the SPC, whereas they are integrated in the ITG: cattle manure is treated by a biodigester for biogas production, its digestate is applied to rice paddy fields as fertilizer, and part of the rice straw is used as cattle feed. We developed an LCA model based on data collected by site investigations of rice and beef farms and the relevant literature and LCA databases. Our evaluation of the ITG and SPC rice-beef production systems using the LCA revealed that among the four environmental impact categories investigated herein, the ITG had less environmental impacts on climate change (22%), energy consumption (22%), and eutrophication (14%) compared to the SPC. With the ITG, the reduction of methane emissions from paddy fields, the avoided energy consumption by the biogas produced, and the lower ammonia, nitrate, and phosphorous emissions from cattle manure and no eutrophying pollutant emissions from grassland were the main contributors to the lower greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and eutrophication potential of this system, respectively. A sensitivity analysis showed that the use of cover for digestate storage resulted in lower environmental impacts of the ITG system compared to SPC system in all of the impact categories investigated here. These results provide helpful information to develop a circular and resource-efficient rice and beef production system that balances increasing productivity with environmental sustainability in rice-producing countries, particularly in Asia.

    <p>The volatile components are produced by fermentation when preparing fermented TMR. In the digestion experiment using fermented TMR, when the samples are dried by heat for the analysis of each chemical component, volatile components disappear. Consequently, they are not reflected in the nutrient value of fermented TMR. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accurate nutritive value of fermented TMR by considering volatile components. We conducted two digestion experiments. For the first one, we used fermented TMR with or without about 5% brewers grains (5%BTMR, CTMR1) and for the second one, we used fermented TMR with or without about 8% brewers grains (8%BTMR, CTMR2). The volatilization rates of ethanol, lactic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid and VBN in this study were 99.4±0.6%, 12.4±6.7%, 74.4±8.8%, 83.5±11.4%, 78.4±22.5, respectively. The dry matter digestibility when considering the volatile components was 1.5 point higher than when not considering it.</p>

  • Physical characteristics of Erianthus arundinaceus as a bedding material for broiler Reviewed

    This study was conducted to evaluate the physical characteristics of the biomass crop Erianthus arundinaceus as a bedding material for broiler and to compare it with existing bedding materials. Three physical characteristics were evaluated: the water absorbability, the water-holding capacity, and the cushioning property. E. arundinaceus, shredded to five different particle sizes, was compared with sawdust, which is a typical bedding material used worldwide, and three alternatives: recycled paper, rice husks, and bagasse. E. arundinaceus absorbed water 5.0 to 10.2 times its weight, and water absorbability increased with decreasing particle size. E. arundinaceus held water around twice its weight regardless of the particle size. The cushioning property of E. arundinaceus tended to improve with increasing particle size. For each physical property, the total average value of the E. arundinaceus samples was compared with the values of other bedding materials. The water absorbability of E. arundinaceus was significantly higher than that of sawdust, recycled paper, and rice husks (p <.01). The water-holding capacity of E. arundinaceus was significantly higher than those of sawdust, recycled paper, rice husks (p <.01), and bagasse (p <.05). The cushioning property of E. arundinaceus was significantly higher than those of sawdust and recycled paper (p <.01). When E. arundinaceus had an average particle size of less than 2.33 mm, it exceeded sawdust in all physical characteristics, suggesting that E. arundinaceus could replace sawdust as a favored bedding material. Our observations of surface structures revealed that the stem pith of E. arundinaceus has a spongy structure, which may contribute to its high water absorbability and water-holding capacity. Moreover, the outermost layer of the E. arundinaceus stem appears to function like a leaf spring, contributing to the high cushioning property.

    食品ロス削減に向けて、エコフィードは発生現場でのロス削減のような取組と、堆肥化やバイオガス生産のような資源化の取組の間を埋める技術として有用である。ヨーロッパでは、肉を含むエコフィードの利用が禁止されており、それを見直すべきとの声も上がっている。一方、国内ではCSF(豚熱)やASF(アフリカ豚熱)等、衛生面のリスクへの対応のため、エコフィードの加熱基準見直しを盛り込んだ飼養衛生管理基準の改正省令が2020年3月公布された。エコフィードの製造量は飼料用穀類の国際価格や感染症の発生状況等、様々な要因の影響を受けている。その現状と課題を紹介する。
