Amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.) is a potential forage crop with a high yield and crude protein (CP) content; however, establishment methods need to improve for the crop to be less sensitive to typhoons. Optimal establishment, cultivation, and utilization in amaranth were examined in a variety of seasons and methods of establishment in 2021–2023. Four methods were examined: (1) direct seeding in rows, (2) direct seeding in spots, (3) soil seed balls, and (4) transplant pretreatment methods under a randomized blocked design (n = 3). Sowings every month from April to August were applied only in 2021, while establishments in April, May, and August with both pretreatment methods were applied in 2022 and 2023. The establishment in August successfully escaped damage from typhoons. The direct seeding of either rows or spots showed marginal success in establishment compared to stable establishment in pretreatment methods. In 2022 and 2023, the highest yield and CP content were achieved in soil seed balls plots in April and in both pretreated plots sown in August, respectively. The quality of silage fermentation showed a high pH, ranging from 4.52 to 6.39, due to the high CP content in 7.59–18.36% dry matter (DM). Sowing in April or August established with soil seed balls can avoid typhoon damage to have stable forage yields and can be processed with a favorable quality of amaranth silage in the region.

This study assesses the impact of defoliation applied to three developmental stages across three cropping seasons from 2021 to 2023 on growth, yield and forage quality in maize. The experimental design included three treatments: defoliation of three expanded leaves at the 3rd–4th leaf stage (DF1), the 5th–6th expanded leaves by leaf punch (DF2) and expanding leaves with the DF2 treatment (DF3) at the 6th–7th leaf stages, compared with no defoliation (control). Over three years, the most significant decrease in dry matter (DM) yield occurred in DF1 during spring sowing, while in summer sowing, the largest reduction was in DF3, both of which were correlated with changes in the number of grains per ear. The DM yields at harvest were positively correlated with plant leaf areas at the silking stage. The digestibility of forage in in vitro DM decreased concomitantly with an increase in acid detergent fiber content, indicating a decrease in forage quality. Given the frequent severe damage observed in summer sown maize and the detrimental effects of early growth stage leaf feeding on quality and quantity of spring sown maize, the application of registered insecticides is advised to reduce pest damage to maize crops.

Background: Pearl millet is characterized by its high dry matter (DM) yields with a high moisture content, which makes it difficult to process as silage. Methods: Pearl millet was sown in mid-September for 3 years to examine its growth, DM yields in early December, and decrease in DM percentage after frost exposure. The crop was processed as round-bale silage to assess silage quality and preference by breeding beef cattle. Results: Plants reached a height of 160–200 cm, with heading tiller percentages of 50%–70% in early December. With frost exposure, DM percentage increased in leaves and panicles, followed by stems, reaching over 40%, 1 month after exposure. These increases were positively correlated with cumulative frost exposure. After frost exposure, in vitro DM digestibility and crude protein content declined while acid detergent fiber content increased. Repeated cafeteria feeding experiments showed a reduced preference for either pearl millet silage or Italian ryegrass hay. The silage showed moderate acidity at pH 4.73–5.40, with lactic acid at 0.58%–1.62% DM, acetic acid at 0.03%–0.10% DM, and negligible butyric acid, indicating a satisfactory quality. Conclusions: In Southern Kyushu, pearl millet sown in late summer can be processed into low-moisture round-bale silage in January, the year following sowing.

Investigation on Spraying Percentage of Droplets at Leaves and Ears using Several Pesticide Spraying Methods in Several Growth Stages of Maize (<i>Zea mays</i> L.)

To clarify a basic knowledge on pesticide application methods against fall armyworm (<i>Spodoptera frugiperda</i>), we investigated the spraying percentage of droplets on leaves and ears covered by water-sensitive paper using several pesticide-spraying methods, including tractor-mounted boom sprayers, handheld electrostatic sprayer, and drone-spraying at various growth stages of maize (<i>Zea mays</i>). In boom spraying methods, the spraying percentages of droplets under the sprayed rate of 200 L per 10 a at the 1st-2nd leaf stage was over than 98%. In the case of 100 L per 10 a at the 5-6th leaf stage, they were less than 50%. For the tractor-mounted boom sprayer, spraying percentages of droplets at the top- and middle-leaves in the 9-10th leaves stage were lower than those at the lower-leaves. On the other hand, the electrostatic sprayer exhibited the opposite results. In drone-spraying at the dough-ripe maize, they were obtained more than 60% in base and middle part of upper- and middle-leaves under the amount of 100 L per 10 a. These results elucidate important information that contributes to our basic knowledge on the selection of pesticide application methods against fall armyworm. It will be necessary to clarify the relationship between the spraying percentage of droplets and the control/exterminating effect.

A triple cropping system, combining spring maize, pearl millet, and twice-cut blast disease resistant Italian ryegrass, was examined for the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 growing seasons to achieve quality herbage production in Miyazaki, southern Kyushu, Japan. The growth of the three crops reached to harvest, even though typhoon and heavy rainfall occurred. Annual dry matter (DM) yield of the triple crops was 4098 g m−2 and 4349 g m−2 in the first and second cropping seasons, respectively. The observed total digestible nutrients (TDN) were higher in spring maize (up to 68.2% and 76.8%), pearl millet (up to 60.0% and 67.9%), and Italian ryegrass (up to 71.6% and 68.6%), during the first and second season, respectively, leading to an annual TDN yield of 2357 g m−2 and 2938 g m−2. The results suggest that the present established triple cropping system is feasible for obtaining high yields with more digestible nutrients in the forages.

The effects of two levels of manure application (184 and 275 kg N ha -1 year -1 ) on herbage yield, quality, and wintering ability during the cropping of a dwarf genotype of late-heading (DL) Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) oversown with Italian ryegrass (IR; Lolium multiflorum Lam.) were examined and compared with chemical fertilizer application (234 kg N ha -1 year -1 ) for 4 years to determine a sustainable and environmentally harmonized herbage production in a hilly area (340 m above sea level). No significant (p > 0.05) differences in growth attributes of plant height, tiller density, percentage of leaf blade, or dry matter yield appeared in either DL Napiergrass or IR among moderate levels (184-275 kg N ha -1 year -1 ) of manure and chemical fertilizer treatments. IR exhibited no significant detrimental effect on spring regrowth of DL Napiergrass, which showed a high wintering ability in all treatments. In vitro dry matter digestibility of DL Napiergrass tended to increase with increasing manure application, especially at the first defoliation in the first three years. Manure application improved soil chemical properties and total nitrogen and carbon content. The results suggested that the lower rate of manure application of 184 kg nitrogen ha -1 year -1 would be suitable, which would be a good substitute for chemical fertilizer application with an equilibrium nitrogen budget for sustainable DL Napiergrass and IR cropping in the hilly region of southern Kyushu.

Based on the expectation of progression of global warming, the yield following quadruple cropping of triple maize crops with a winter barley crop was evaluated in a previous 2 years trial. Materials and Methods: Forage quality of the previous triple (spring, summer and autumn) maize with winter barley cropping was determined for 2 years in the region. Winter barley, sown in inter-rows in mid-November, was harvested in early to mid-March while spring maize, sown in early to mid-March, was harvested in early to mid-June, summer maize, sown from early to mid-June, was harvested in late August and autumn maize, sown from late August to early-September, was harvested in mid-November. Results: Yield of winter barley was around 900-930 g DM m-2, spring maize was 1440-1800 g DM m-2 with 41-59% ear DM and summer maize was 820-1170 g DM m-2 with 41-44% ear DM. However, the autumn maize yield varied greatly from 330-810 g DM m-2 with 33-56% ear DM due to typhoon and cool weather damage. In vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD) in maize ears was higher than 75% and in leaf blades was higher than 60%, while for barley leaf blade, it was higher than 80%; the values for stems were lower than leaf blades for all crops of both species. The IVDMD was negatively correlated with Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) and Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) concentration (r = -0.790 and -0.856, respectively) at the 1% probability level. By estimating Total Digestible Nutrient (TDN) concentration from ADF concentration based on regression equations, the TDN yield was 2750-2870 g DM m-2 year-1 over 2 years. Conclusion: Triple maize with winter barley cropping can produce 4090-4330 g DM m-2 year-1 with 66-67% TDN concentration in the region, which is recommended as a potential system for intensive ley farming.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of Digested Effluent (DE) application on herbage yield and quality, Herbage Consumption (HC) and Dry Matter Intake (DMI) under a paddock scale of rotational grazing by a herd of dairy cows on dwarf Napier grass pasture in southern Kyushu, Japan for two years in 2007 and 2008. Plant growth attributes, such as plant height, tiller number and herbage mass and HC increased consistently from the first to the second or third grazing cycle in the two years. Pre-grazing herbage mass was averaged at 176 and 193 g m−2 in Chemical Fertilizer (CF) and DE treatments, respectively and HC and DMI did not differ between the two treatments. Overwintering ability was almost perfect in Miyazaki, judged by 97.1% of regrown plants in May 2008. Thus, dwarf Napier grass pasture fertilized with liquid DE can be utilized by dairy cow grazing as the same with CF fertilization, where DMI was averaged at 4.4 kg dry matter head−1 day−1 for 3 summer months in the two years.

Forage maize is a prominent high-yield summer crop in the region, where it used to be sown from late March to early August. Due to global warming, maize cropping in the common hot summer now easily suffers from heavy rain and typhoons and this contrasts with the need of expanding the growth periods suitable for maize cropping. This study tested the cropping of triple (spring, summer and autumn) maize crops with winter barley to determine its suitability to be cultivated in the region. Winter barley, sown into inter-rows of the previous row crops in mid-November, was harvested from late February to late March, when spring maize was sown earlier than the current season, after the danger of late frost has passed. Summer maize was sown from early June to early July and autumn maize which was sown from late August to mid-September was harvested in mid-to late November. Winter barley yielded 900-1090 g dry matter (DM)/m2 with 22% ear DM. Early-planted spring maize which was sown in early March yielded 1600-1880 g DM/m2 with 16-28% ear DM and summer maize yielded 900-1280 g DM/m2 with 19-39% ear DM. However, the autumn maize yield varied from 130-300 g DM/m2 without seed maturation to 740-880 g DM/m2 with 51-54% ear DM due to typhoon and cool weather damage. Therefore, triple maize with winter barley cropping can produce a yield of more than 4000 g DM/m2, especially from 2600 g DM/m2 from winter barley and spring maize crops sown in early March, leading to the conclusion that spring maize sown in early March can be harvested without high risk from weather disasters in the region (290 words ≤ 300 words, upper-limit).

© 2016 Yasuyuki Ishii et al.The effects of short-day (SD) and gibberellic acid (GA3) treatments on promoting vegetative propagation during the summer were examined in Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach). A dwarf variety of late heading type (DL) Napier grass was exposed to three SD treatments (5, 10, and 20 short days plus a spray of 400 ppm GA3 solution following each SD treatment, GASD) or no treatment (control). Additionally, then, a dwarf variety of early heading (DE) and the normal variety of Merkeron (ME) were exposed to 10 days of GA-SD treatment together with nontreated controls. For DL and DE, GA-SD treatments showed the following effects: 10-day GA-SD treatment increased significantly (P < 0.05) the length of lateral tiller buds, maintained a high rooting percentage, and increased the diameter of the tiller buds. This resulted in a taller plant, one with enhanced tiller numbers, and thus a greater number of established nursery plants for the two dwarf varieties. In contrast, there was only a limited positive effect of the GA-SD treatments on the normal variety, ME. Thus, 10 days of GA-SD treatment was judged to be the most effective treatment for promoting lateral tiller bud elongation and early maturation in tiller buds for the two dwarf varieties of Napier grass.

All rights reserved.Since dwarf napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.) must be propagated vegetatively due to lack of viable seeds, root splitting and stem cuttings are generally used to obtain true-to-type plant populations. These ordinary methods are laborious and costly, and are the greatest barriers for expanding the cultivation area of this crop. The objectives of this research were to develop nursery production of dwarf napiergrass in cell trays and to compare the efficiency of mechanical versus manual methods for cell-tray propagation and field transplanting. After defoliation of herbage either by a sickle (manually) or hand-mowing machine, every potential aerial tiller bud was cut to a single one for transplanting into cell trays as stem cuttings and placed in a glasshouse over winter. The following June, nursery plants were trimmed to a 25-cm length and transplanted in an experimental field (sandy soil) with 20,000 plants ha−1 either by shovel (manually) or Welsh onion planter. Labour time was recorded for each process. The manual defoliation of plants required 44 % more labour time for preparing the stem cuttings (0.73 person-min. stemcutting−1) compared to using hand-mowing machinery (0.51 person-min. stem-cutting −1). In contrast, labour time for transplanting required an extra 0.30 person-min. m−2 (14 %) using the machinery compared to manual transplanting, possibly due to the limited plot size for machinery operation. The transplanting method had no significant effect on plant establishment or plant growth, except for herbage yield 110 days after planting. Defoliation of herbage by machinery, production using a cell-tray nursery and mechanical transplanting reduced the labour intensity of dwarf napiergrass propagation.

© 2016 Yasuyuki Ishii et al.After the infection of foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Miyazaki, Japan, in 2010, cattle and swine were slaughtered and buried in a site of 100 ha, where weed control is difficult and costly since lands are unlevelled and prohibited to be plowed for 3 years. To consider the adaptability of napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.) to the animal burial site for weed control, two napiergrass varieties, normal Wruk wona (WK) and dwarf late-heading variety (DL), were transplanted, compared with sowing of maize (MZ) and sorghum (SR) in both burial (BU) and neighboring bordered area (BO) in mid-June 2011. Even though several weed control methods were subjected to lands, MZ and SR failed to be established stably at only 1/3-1/2 due to the suppression of growth by indigenous weeds, while WK and DL successfully established as high as 82-91% and 73-85%, respectively, in 2011. The poor establishment of MZ and SR after sowing tended to be increased with the year from establishment. Plant dry matter yield and cellulose concentration were the highest in WK in 2011, while overwintering ability was constantly higher in DL in the 3 years. It is necessary to consider the utilization of forage plants on the animal burial site.

© 2015 Asian Network for Scientific Information.Ordinary stacked composting from bovine and poultry manures requires large amounts of materials and it is difficult to conduct uniform and repeated processing. While precise optimization using bovine manure and an experimental small-scale apparatus (Kaguyahime) has already been accomplished, poultry manure has readily decomposable components compared to bovine manure. The objective of this study was to determine the precise optimization of poultry manure composting using the same small-scale apparatus, filled with 7 kg of manure that was dried under sunlight and different amounts of sawdust as subsidiary material. In the preliminary experiment, the maximum temperature for the first 7 days of composting reached over 60°C when the moisture content of the mixture decreased below 65%, while the manure-to-sawdust ratio negligibly affected the temperature increase. Under the preliminary conditions, the maximum temperature of poultry manure mixed with sawdust was over 70°C within 2 days after composting and the thermophile phase above 60 and 55°C continued for an additional 27 and 18 h, respectively. The pH and electrical conductivity of poultry manure composted for 32 days remained at 9.1 and 6.6 mS cm<sup>-1,</sup> respectively, which indicates the manure is safe for land application.

In the alpine grazing rangeland of the Tibetan Plateau, where three major rivers originate in China, ten sites (Plot 1 to10, 20 m × 20 m each) were selected in the habitats of plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) in August 2012 for investigatingthe relationship among population density of pleateau pikas, vegetation and soil physical and chemical properties. Thepopulation density was estimated by counting the active (opened) burrows with a filling-burrow method after counting thenumber of burrow openings in each plot. A vegetational survey was conducted with quadrat methods in those plots. Soilsamples were collected from 0 to 5 cm depth and physical and chemical properties were determined. The burrow openingdensity (BD) ranged from 0 to 133/400 m2 and the available burrow opening density (ABD) ranged from 5 to 63/400 m2except 0 in Plot 1, 2 and 3. BD was negatively correlated with plant height (r = -0.652, P < 0.05) and tended to be donewith coverage (r = -0.600, P < 0.1) in vegetation and positively with bulk density (r = 0.607, P < 0.1) and negatively withSO42- content (r = -0.572, P < 0.1) in soil. ABD tended to be correlated with plant height (r = -0.562, P < 0.1) and bulkdensity (r = 0.593, P < 0.1). Generalized liner model analyses showed that BD and ABD were affected positively by soilhardness and TN and negatively by plant height (P < 0.001). BD only was negatively affected by TC in soil (P < 0.001).With cation and anion contents in soil, BD and ABD were negatively affected by Ca2+, NH4+ and SO42- (P < 0.001), and alsoonly BD was affected by Mg2+ (P < 0.001). It was suggested that the increase of population density of plateau pikas mightbe related with the lowered plant height, increases of soil hardness and the TN content and decrease of the TC contentwhere domestic herbivores have grazed intensively.

In the alpine grazing rangeland of the Tibetan Plateau, where three major rivers originate in China, four sites (Plot I to IV, 50 m × 50 m each) in 2011, and ten sites (Plot 1 to 10, 20 m × 20 m each) in 2012 in the habitats of plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) were selected in order to investigate the relationship between the highly varied individual density of pleateau pikas and vegetation. The individual density was roughly estimated by counting the active burrow openings with a filling-burrow opening method. A vegetation survey was conducted with one or both quadrat and line transect methods in those plots. The active burrow opening density was significantly correlated with the burrow opening density (r = 0.996, P < 0.01). The active opening density differed significantly among the plots (P < 0.001), and that in Plot I was smallest (4/2,500 m2/day). The density in Plot IV (305/2,500 m2/day) was greatest in 2011, and ranged from zeroes in Plots 1, 2 and 3 to 63/400 m2/day in Plot 10 in 2012. Indices for floristic diversity in Plot I were highest and in Plot II were lowest in 2011, and in Plot 3 were highest and in Plot 4 were lowest in 2012. Generalized liner model analyses showed that the burrow opening density was affected positively by vegetation cover and number of plant species, and negatively by aboveground biomass and plant height, and that the active burrow opening density was affected positively by vegetation cover and number of plant species, and negatively by plant height. These results suggested that plateau pikas would select sites with comparatively higher vegetation cover as their habitats from sites with lower plant height and lower vegetation cover where domestic animals have grazed.

As for estimating the suitability of napier grass for biomass use in southern Kyushu, Japan, the objective of this study was to determine the most suitable genotype of napier grass for dry matter production and quality (fiber content) for biomass ethanol conversion in the year the plants were established. Six genotypes of napier grass, a dwarf early-heading type, a dwarf late-heading type, a hybrid of pearl millet with napier grass, a purple-foliage type and normal varieties of Merkeron and Wruk wona, were examined for growth attributes, dry matter yield, chemical composition and in vitro Dry Matter Digestibility (IVDMD) at the University of Miyazaki in southern Kyushu, Japan in 2009. Dry matter yield ranged from 13.4 to 33.5 Mg ha-1, with the highest yielder being normal Wruk wona, followed by Merkeron. Hemicellulose and cellulose content of both Leaf Blade (LB) and stem inclusive of leaf sheath (ST) did not differ significantly among genotypes, except for cellulose content in ST which was significantly higher for the dwarf early-heading type than for the other genotypes. The dwarf late-heading type had significantly higher IVDMD in ST (65.8%) due to lower acid detergent lignin and cellulose content in ST than the other genotypes. Based on dry matter production, fiber (carbohydrate) content in the current study and theoretical conversion efficiency from cellulose and hemicelluloses of 0.29 and 0.23, respectively, Merkeron appears the most promising genotype for biomass production, with theoretical ethanol production potential of 5850 L ha-1 year-1 in the year of establishment. © Knowledgia Review, Malaysia.

A 2-year field experiment was conducted to examine the fertilizing effect of digested effluent of manure (DEM) on growth attributes, dry matter yield, forage quality and nitrogen (N) recovery rate of maize (Zea mays L.)-Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cropping system, compared with application of conventional fertilizer (commercial cattle manure and chemical fertilizer) and sole chemical fertilizer. The DEM solution was applied at three levels : 40, 70 and 100 gN/m^2/year for low, medium and high levels, respectively. The N application level in the chemical and conventional fertilizer treatment were 40 and 69.2 g N/m^2/year, respectively, which were similar to and the same as in the low and medium levels of DEM, respectively. The effect of DEM on growth attributes, yield, forage quality and nitrogen recovery rate of each cropping and total of this cropping system was almost corresponded with that of the chemical fertilizer at the same N application rate. This suggests that DEM can be used in short-term as substitution of fastly effective chemical fertilizer and optimum application rate of DEM should be below 40 gN/m^2/year in the maize-Italian ryegrass cropping system in southern Kyushu.

Since Kyushu is the base of beef cattle industry in Japan, livestock wastes needs to be treated effectively as an organic fertilizer replacing inorganic or chemical fertilizers in forage production. However, little is known about the differences in mineralization characteristics and fertilizing efficiency between farmyard manures derived from cattle with different feeding systems. Thus, effects of farmyard manures derived from fattening beef cattle with co-digestion substrates of sawdust (abbreviated as F+SM) and breeding beef cattle under the feeding of sawdust (B+SM) or grazing on bahiagrass with the substrate of sawdust (B+BSM) or rhodesgrass (B+BRM) were examined for herbage yield, nitrogen content and soil chemical properties in tropical colored guineagrass. Even though the F+SM had lowest total nitrogen (TN) content with highest carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, herbage dry matter yield (DMY), crude protein (CP) content and chlorophyll content in colored guineagrass were highest in the F+SM, on the contrary to the B+BRM which had highest TN content with lowest C/N ratio, leading to the lowest herbage DMY and CP content. Nitrogen mineralization characteristics of farmyard manure determined by an incubation method showed the highest efficiency from F+SM, followed by B+BSM, B+SM and lowest from B+BRM, which lead to an resolution for the contradiction between chemical properties of farmyard manure and the grass growth. Soil chemical properties such as pH and TN content did not vary so much and were hardly correlated with these herbage yield and TN content. It is proposed that the characteristics and fertilizing efficiency of beef cattle farmyard manures should be variable depending on beef cattle feeding systems and co-digestion substrates, and the F+SM had highest fertilizing efficiency on the grass growth among farmyard manures examined.

In order to improve growth and seasonal productivity of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) during the low temperature season in southern Kyushu, growth attributes, forage yield and quality of a new genotype, "Tifton 9", which was bred in and introduced from the United States, was compared to current genotypes, "Pensacola" and "Nanou", for 4 years after the year of establishment. Observation and cutting of herbage were conducted every month in the second and third years and every 2months in the fourth and fifth years. "Tifton 9" showed superior growth and yielding ability during the low temperature season, resulting in stabilization of seasonal productivity and improvement of annual dry matter (DM) yield cut every month in the second and third years. In vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD) as forage quality did not differ among three genotypes and correlated negatively (P<0.05) with DM yield for both 1- and 2-month intervals. Other quality attributes did not differ among genotypes. The average values for IVDMD and concentrations of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and acid detergent lignin in "Tifton 9" across whole cuttings in the fifth year were 49.4, 6.5, 70.5, 42.1 and 6.7%, respectively. Respective forage quality of "Tifton 9" is equivalent to a standard value among common tropical grasses.

ネピアグラスの矮性晩生品種(DLネピアグラス)を南九州の生産者へ普及する過程で,造成年における雑草防除が本牧草の良好な定着と粗飼料収量を確保する重要な要因であることが明らかとなった.本研究は,3種類の雑草防除管理,すなわち節間伸長茎では再生能力を欠く一年生セタリアの混播,ペーパーマルチの設置および手取り除草と雑草防除なしについて,乾物収量,粗飼料品質および越冬性を2カ年(2008~2009年および2010~2011年)にわたって検討した.いずれの雑草防除管理も雑草防除なしと比べて,草高,茎数密度,葉身比率および葉面積指数などの植物体の各形質に有意な正の効果をもたらした.特に,ペーパーマルチの設置は,両年ともに最も高い収量が得られ,2008~2009年では越冬率が最も高く100%であった.一年生セタリアの混播は,雑草によるDLネピアグラスの収量減を部分的に補完する効果があった.粗飼料品質としての<i>in vitro</i>乾物消化率(IVDMD)と粗タンパク質(CP)含量に対する雑草防除の効果は認められなかった.したがって,ペーパーマルチの設置と一年生セタリアの混播はともに,造成したDLネピアグラスの収量性を確保するため,また越冬性改善の可能性のある有効な雑草防除手法として提起できるものと推察された.

Smallholder beef farmers, particularly in isolated islands, were highly aged, holding limited arable lands with poor machinery equipment. Demand for herbage production increases rapidly due to high cost of imported herbage supply. We investigated the adaptability of dwarf napiergrass (<I>Pennisetum purpureum</I> Schumach) of late-heading type (dwarf-late, DL) to 12 sites including isolated islands in 3 Prefectures of southern Kyushu by determining soil properties, plant growth characters, herbage yield and quality, and overwintering ability in 2007.2009. The dry matter (DM) yield of DL napiergrass ranged in 0.7-13.6 and 0.2.15.8 Mg/ha/yr in 2007 and 2008, respectively. There were significantly positive correlations between N fertilizer supply and DM yield (r = 0.844, P < 0.01 and r = 0.928; P < 0.001 in 2007 and 2008, respectively). However, not only by the rate of fertilizer application, DM yield was also variable depending on soil fertility and weed control across the examined sites. Herbage quality in leaf blade and stem inclusive of leaf sheath, as assessed by <I>in vitro</I> DM digestibility and crude protein (CP) content, ranged in 56.76% and 6.18%, respectively. In some cases, CP content declined below the critical level as a feed for breeding cows, since the herbage quality in leaf blade had significantly negative correlation with cutting interval (P < 0.05). Results revealed that DL napiergrass should adapt to the examined sites including isolated islands in the established and subsequent years. However, it is necessary to maintain the satisfactory level of herbage yield and quality by the minimum fertilizer application at least more than 100 kg N/ha/yr, and the optimum soil condition, cutting interval and weed control after establishment.

The objectives of this study were to determine the growth response of dwarf napiergrass (<I>Pennisetum purpureum</I> Schumach) to digested effluent of manure (DEM). Liquid form of DEM (LDEM) produced from biogas-plant and different rates of manure enriched with LDEM (SDEM) were applied to dwarf napiergrass. The plant height, tiller number, leaf area and total dry matter weight (TDMW) significantly increased with the increasing manure application in dwarf napiergrass. This yielding ability was derived from high accumulation of dry matter in root and underground stem part to show lower top to root ratio below 2 in this genotype. Both LDEM and SDEM were so effective in enhancing plant growth as in chemical fertilizer, while the efficiency of total N content to yielding ability was the least in SDEM, followed by LDEM and chemical fertilizer with no-significant difference among treatments in dwarf napiergrass.

<p>We investigated that the effect of new iron-supplement fertilizer TetsuRiki (Aichi Steel's company) containing FeO as a main component on the growth and post-dormancy growth of Japanese lawn grass (<i>Zoysia japonica</i> Steud.) under the field conditions. Plants were supplied by ion-supplement application under three levels control (0 kg/m<sup>2</sup>), low (0.17 kg/m<sup>2</sup>), high (0.33 kg/m<sup>2</sup>). Plant height and dry matter weight of shoot were remarkably improved in parallel with the improvement of leaf SPAD value. And the number of budding was increased with adversely effecting post-dormancy recovery in spring. Iron and manganese concentrations in aboveground plant parts were higher in Fe application plots than control plots. However, the number of sprout in Fe application plots was no significant difference between control plots.</p>

Maize (Zea mays L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam., IR) are major forage crops in southern Kyushu. This study tested 3 cropping systems typical to the region (double cropping of maize and IR (M-IR), double cropping of sorghum and IR (S-IR), and double cropping of maize (M-M)) for 5 years for their performance on the non-fertile, poorly permeable heavy soil. A single cropping of maize on fertile, permeable Andosol (M) was also tested for comparison. Herbage dry matter yields of summer crops (maize and sorghum) were more variable among years (CV=46.0-54.4%) than those of IR as a winter crop (CV=9.5-23.1%), with the low yields being associated with frequent attacks of typhoons and heavy rainfalls. Consequently, in M-IR and S-IR, incorporation of IR into the cropping system decreased the year-to-year variability in herbage yield (31.2 and 48.3%, respectively). Maize on Andosol (M) showed 2-34% higher yields than the 1st-crop maize on the heavy soil (M-M). The results confirm the relatively low productivity of the heavy soil and show the advantage of combining a winter crop with a summer crop for stabilizing annual herbage production on the heavy soil in southern Kyushu.

ネピアグラスの成長に及ぼす堆肥から無機化した養分量の影響を検討するため、異なる堆肥施用量の下でポット栽培したネピアグラスの分げつと葉の成長および個体当りの成長形質を測定した。堆肥施用量の増加に伴い、葉の成長は主として茎当りの総展開葉数および分げつ数の増加により促進された。分げつ数および平均分げつ重は、堆肥施用量が中程度(4kg/m2)のレベルまで増加するにつれて増加した。植物体内の乾物分配については、茎(葉鞘を含む)に対する葉身の比率や地下部に対する地上部の比率は生育に伴い低下したが、堆肥施用量の影響はほとんど認められなかった。堆肥施用量の増加により葉と茎の成長が促進され、それが葉面積指数(LAI)の増加をもたらし、さらに個体群成長速度(CGR)の増加をもたらした。CGRはLAIとの間に、全LAIを通して正の直線関係が成り立った。堆肥施用により、高温の盛夏期間にCGRが最も高くなったのは、広範囲のLAIの下で純同化率がほぼ一定であったことによっており、盛夏期間に堆肥からの無機化速度が高まったことが示唆された。

Effect of rotational grazing of yak in two (warm and cold) seasons for over 20 years on species diversity and biomass of plants was investigated in Potentilla fruticosa rangeland in northern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. In the paddock grazed in warm seasons (WSP), 37 species (Gramineae : Cyperaceae : forbs : shrubs = 6 : 5 : 23 : 3) appeared and 44 (Gramineae : Cyperaceae : forbs : shrubs=7 : 6 : 27 : 4) did in that grazed in cold seasons (CSP). WSP was smaller in values of Richness, Shannon-Wiener, Simpson and Pielou evenness indices than CSP. Vegetation coverage and community height were significantly lower in WSP than in CSP (p<0.01). Number of plant species was significantly smaller in WSP (7-16 species/m^2) than in CSP (17-22 species/m^2) (p0.001). Aboveground biomass of Gramineae was significantly lower in WSP than in CSP (p<0.01). Subdominant species in WSP were Kobresia humilis, Leontopodium nanwn and Potentilla anserina which were short in height and grazing-resistant, while those in CSP were Poa pratensis, Elymus nutans and Kobresia capillifolia which were tall in height. It was considered that long-term rotational grazing of yak in warm and cold seasons decreased floral diversity and biomass of plants, especially in Gramineae in WSP as compared with those in CSP, and the deterioration was going on in WSP.

ネピアグラス(品種Wruk wona)の乾物収量とin viro乾物消化率(IVDMD)に対する前年度2カ年の堆肥施用と刈取り頻度の後作用を、成長形質(乾物重、葉面積)、窒素吸収量およびin viro可消化乾物収量の面から、3年目に無施肥の2回刈り条件で検討した。収穫部の乾物収量、全窒素吸収量およびin viro可消化乾物収量は堆肥施用量が増すほど増加し、刈取り頻度が増すほど低下した。3カ年の実験期間における施用した堆肥中の窒素利用効率は、堆肥施用量が増すほど、あるいは刈取り頻度が増すほど低下した。

矮性型ネピアグラス草地の輪換放牧特性を検討するため、晩期出穂型の矮性型ネピアグラス品種(DL)の発根した分げつ苗を移植して造成した5aの草地で、造成初年目および2年目の2001年および2002年に、3頭の肉用繁殖雌牛による放牧利用を行なった。輪換放牧回数は2001年では4回、2002年では5回であり、いずれも草量に応じて約1週間放牧した後、2001年では約3週間、2002年では約1ヶ月休牧した。茎数は両年ともに最終回の放牧時まで増加し、乾物現存量は、両年ともに第4回目の放牧時まで増加したが、草高、平均一茎重および葉身重比率は放牧を重ねるごとに減少する傾向であった。放牧前の茎数と次回の茎数増加比を畦ごとに比較すると、両年ともに、放牧に伴い茎数が増加し茎数増加比が低下したため、両者の間に負の相関関係が成立ち、茎数は初回および2回目の放牧後に大きく増加することが示された。層別刈取り法により放牧前の葉身比率(PLB)を検討したところ、両年ともに、草冠の頂部から2層では、PLBはほぼ100%、3層目の1年目および2年目では約95%および80%であり、葉身被食率は上位の2層では100%、3層目ではほぼ100%であった。家畜による被食量(HC)は放牧を重ねるごとに、3ないし4回目の放牧時まで増加し、最終回の放牧では低温による再生速度の低下により減少した。家畜当たりの乾物摂取量(DMI)は、1年目では4.3-10.8kgDM/頭/日、2年目では6.7-11.4kgDM/頭/日(15.5-28.6gDM/kgLW/日)の範囲であった。日中のDLの採食時間比率は放牧開始日では約60%であり、最終日ではこの比率が増加する傾向であった。造成後2年目の2回目から4回目までの放牧期間においてDMIが約20gDM/kgLW/日以上であれば、濃厚飼料の供給なしに、家畜生体重がほぼ維持されることが示された。

バヒアグラス(Paspalum noaum Flugge cv. Pensacola)草地に移植した普通型と矮性型のネピアグラス(Penniseum purpureum Schumach)における放牧適性を比較するため、本研究では普通型ネピアクラス品種としてWruk wona (Wr)、矮性型ネピアグラス品種として早期出穂型(DE)および晩期出穂型(DL)の造成後2-3年目の草地を供試した。放牧季節は、2001年および2002年ともに6月から11月であり、約3.5aの牧区に、乳用牛15-16頭、肉用牛2-3頭を昼間の約5-7.5時間放牧し、約1ケ月休牧する輪換放牧を行った。株の越冬率と越冬株の再生茎数は、2001年、2002年の5月ではともにDLが最も高かった。草高、草量および平均1茎重は放牧期間を通してWrが最も高く、茎数と葉面積指数はDLがWrとDEより大きく、葉身比率と葉/茎比はWrに比べ矮性型の2品種で高かった。被食量はDLが最も高く、次いでWr、DEの順であり、利用率はDLが最も高く、次いでDE、Wrの順であり、バヒアクラスが最も低くなった。採食時間比率は両年ともに、初回放牧時ではバヒアグラスが最も高かったが、放牧を繰り返すごとに、DLの比率が大きく増加し、次いでWr、DEの順に高くなったのに対して、バヒアグラスのそれは減少する傾向であった。以上のことから、高い利用率と高い越冬性を示すDLが、南九州における集約的な放牧利用に最も適するネピアグラス品種であることが示唆された。

In order to clarify the effects of administrating selenium (Se) and vitamin E (V.E) on the recovery of the corpus luteum function and serum Se and V.E concentrations, 20 mg of Se and 544 IU of vitamin E were intramuscularly injected once into five grazing late-pregnant Yaks (Treatment). The changes of serum Se, V.E and progesterone (P_4) levels after injection were examined and compared with that of five non-treated ones (Control). 1) The serum Se concentration of Treatment increased from 17.5±3.4 before injection to 45.2±3.8 ng/ml in the 2nd week after injection (P<0.001), and then it declined until the end of the 8 th week. However, Control kept it lower than Treatment through experimental period. In the 2nd, 4th, and 8th weeks after injection, the serum Se concentrations of Treatment were significantly higher than those of Control (p<0.001, p<0.05 and p<0.05 respectively). 2 ) Serum V.E concentration of Treatment was 422±70ng/dl before injection and decreased in the 4th week after injection around parturition. It increased significantly in the 6th and 8th weeks (p<0.001) after injection as compared with that before injection. And also it was higher than that of Control in the 4 th, 6 th and 8 th weeks after injection. Serum V.E concentration of Control decreased significantly around parturition as compared with that before parturition (p<0.05) and thereafter kept lower level than that of Treatment. 3) The serum P_4 concentration of Treatment showed an increasing trend in the early post-partum period as compared with that of Control. The serum P_4 concentrations in the 8 th week after parturition were higher in Treatment than in Control (p<0.05).

The effects of cutting interval and cutting height on dry matter productivity and overwintering ability were compared among 4 Penniselum species, napiergrass, kinggrass, hybrid napiergrass and pearl millet in the established year to examine the suitable cutting practice for the productivity and persistence. The cutting intervals were 60 and 90 days, and the cutting heights were 0 and 30 cm above the ground. Annual herbage dry matter yield (HDMY) was the highest in kinggrass, followed by hybrid napiergrass, napiergrass and pearl millet, and was higher in the plants at a 90-day interval and 0-cm height than at a 60-day interval and 30-cm height, respectively. The percentage of dry matter to fresh matter did not correlate with the annual HDMY or cutting height. The plants cut at a 90-day interval at a 0-cm height had the highest in mean tiller weight, crop growth rate, net assimilation rate and HDMY, but the lowest tiller number and percentage leaf blade to the whole harvested plant. Thus, the correlation coefficients between HDMY and plant characters were positive for plant height, mean tiller weight, leaf area index and crop growth rate in all 4 species and were negative for tiller number and percentage leaf blade except for pearl millet. Both percentage overwintered plants and regrown tiller number were the highest in kinggrass followed by napiergrass and hybrid napiergrass; these were nil in pearl millet under all cutting practices, and were higher in the plants cut at a 30-cm height than at a 0-cm height. This tended to be associated with higher tiller bud number and higher total nonstructural carbohydrate concentration in the stubble after cutting at a 30-cm height. Regrown tiller number was higher in the plants cut at a 60-day interval than at a 90-day interval in all species except for pearl millet, but the percentage overwintered plants was not affected by the cutting interval. Thus, the combination of highest annual HDMY and highest overwintering ability was attained by cutting at a 90-day interval at a 30-cm height in kinggrass.

ネピアグラス及びネピアグラスとパールミレットとの交雑種であるキンググラスについて、本研究では分げつおよび葉の展開と乾物蓄積との関係に及ぼす3水準の施肥量の影響を、2ケ年にわたり1/2000aワグナーポット栽培により検討した。出現分げつ数(EN)と再生分げつ数(RN)は施肥量を増すほど増加した。これは、施肥量を増すほど分げつの出現速度(RE)と出現期間がより高位の茎ほど増加したためであり、葉の展開速度(RLE)と個葉の葉面積(LA)も同様の傾向であった。生葉数は生育の前半では施肥量の増加に伴い増加したが、その順位は生育後期には逆転した。経時的に主茎の全葉面積(SlLA)を測定したところ、SILAは平均の茎葉面積(LA/)と正の相関関係があり、LA/と葉面積指数(LAI)との関係も同様であった。8月における茎の粗タンパク質含有率はENと密接な相関関係が成立ち、LAと日有効気温との間に正の相関関係が認められた。施肥量の増加に伴い、RE、RLEとSILAの増加がLA/の増加と同調しており、これがLAIの増加を通じて乾物蓄積量の増加をもたらした。供試した施肥範囲では高施肥量ほど費用対効果が低下したが、いずれの施肥範囲でも、購入粗飼料に比べて十分競合しうる価格で乾物蓄積が達成されることが示された。

The effects of planting density and cutting frequency on dry matter productivity and overwintering ability were compared in the years following establishment among dwarf varieties (early-heading, DE and late-heading, DL) and normal varieties, Wruk wona (Wr) and Merkeron (Me), in the southern part of Kyushu, Japan. The planting densities examined were high (16 plants m-2, 25 cm × 25 cm of spacing), medium (8 plants m-2, 50 cm × 25 cm), and low (4 plants m-2, 50 cm × 50 cm) for Wr, DE and DL, and was only medium for Me. The cutting frequency was three times at about 60-day intervals in 1999 and two times at about 90-day intervals in 2000. Irrespective of the planting density, dwarf varieties were higher in tiller number (TN), leaf area index (LAI) and dry weight percentage of leaf blade (PLB) than normal varieties, but lower in plant height (PLH), mean tiller dry matter weight (MTW) and total dry matter weight at all planting densities in both years. With the increase in planting density, TN and annual herbage dry matter yield (HDMY) increased. The annual HDMY was higher in 2000 (cut twice) than in 1999 (cut three times), and the difference in annual HDMY between the dwarf and normal varieties was reduced by planting at a high density and cut twice. This was due to higher MTW in dwarf varieties than in normal varieties at the higher TN conditions. The percentage of overwintered plant (POP) tended to be higher in DL than in other varieties and was higher in 2000 than in 2001 for all varieties, while it tended to decrease with the increase in planting density. Even though the dry matter productivity was higher in the normal varieties than in the dwarf varieties at any planting density and cutting frequency, DL tended to show a stable productivity with high PLB irrespective of planting density and cutting frequency. In addition, it had a high overwintering ability compared with the other varieties.

世界の熱帯および亜熱帯地域において、ネピアグラスおよびネピアグラスとパールミレットとの交雑種であるキンググラスは、高い乾物生産性を示す青刈り飼料作物である。本研究では、植物体各器官の生長と乾物生産性に及ぼす3水準の施用量の影響を、2カ年にわたり1/2000aワグナーポット栽培により生長解析法で検討した。草丈、1茎当たりの総展開葉数(TELN/S)、総乾物重(TDMW)、茎乾物重、根乾物重および平均-茎重(MTW)は生育に伴い増加し、増加の程度は施肥量を増すほど高まった。茎数(TN)は植え付けから7月まで増加した後徐々に減少した。地上部重/根重比は、施肥量の増加に伴い増加したが、葉身/茎比には施肥量の影響が見られなかった。個体群生長速度(CGR)と葉面積指数(LAI)は、植え付けから9月まで徐々に増加した後減少し、両草種共に施肥量の増加に伴い増加した。植物体諸形質と生長関数との関係では、TELN/SとLAIとの間には、両草種共にいずれの施肥量でも負の(上に凸の)2次曲線が得られ、TELN/Sの変化がLAIの変化に対する主要因の1つと判断された。LAIとCGRとの関係は、両草種共に同一生育期間では施肥レベルを込みにして直線的であり、CGRはLAIの増加に伴い増加し、LAIの分布範囲は施肥量の増加に伴い拡大することが示唆された。総クロロフィル含有率は生育に伴い多肥区ほど大きく低下した。以上の結果から、施肥量の増加に伴うTNおよびTELN/Sの増加は、LAIの増加を通じてCGRの増加と密接に関連しており、これらは、両草種共にTDMWの増加に大きく影響する植物体の要因と推察された。草種間差については、施肥量の変化に対するTN、TELN/SおよびMTWの反応がほぼ補償的であるため、同一施肥量ではLAI、CGRさらに最終的にはTDMWが、両草種ともほぼ一致する結果となった。
