In a sustainable society, it is necessary to develop systems that produce enough food and energy while also preserving the environment. Both agricultural production for food generation and photovoltaics for renewable energy production require large, open fields. In this research study, we investigate the feasibility of combining food and energy production into a single field by examining the effects of installing photovoltaic equipment above land used for farming. We grew komatsuna, kabu, mizuna, and spinach underneath photovoltaic equipment, and investigated the influence of shading from the photovoltaic equipment on plant growth and yields during winter cultivation. As expected, both the amount of solar radiation and the air and soil temperature were lower under the photovoltaics than those under the open field. The growth rate of komatsuna, kabu, and mizuna were slower. However, yields and qualities sufficient to meet market demands remained possible with extension of the cultivation periods. Therefore, although temperature and solar radiation are reduced under the photovoltaic equipment in winter, it is nevertheless possible to produce vegetables in the farmland, providing a novel opportunity to realize an integrated agricultural system with parallel production of food and energy.

The growth and quality of the fruit from adult ‘Fuyu’ and ‘Hiratanenashi’ Japanese persimmon (<i>Diospyros kaki</i> Thunb.) trees that were grafted onto <i>D. kaki</i> seedlings (S), Rootstock-a (R-a), ‘MKR1’, and own-rooted (O-R) trees planted in February 2003 were observed from 2015 to 2021, when almost all of the trees entered stable, high-productive phases and the fruit quality was stable. The trees that were grafted onto ‘MKR1’ were still dwarfed but produced fruit efficiently. After disbudding took place, in the first half of stage I of the double sigmoid growth curve there was a certain period of time when the fruit of the ‘Hiratanenashi’ trees that were grafted onto ‘MKR1’ was lighter than the trees that had been grafted onto S. However, in the second half of stage I, the fruit of the former was heavier than that of the latter, and the flesh cells of the former were larger than that of the latter. In stage II and III, the fruit of the latter grew faster and became significantly heavier just before the harvest. The fruit growth of the ‘Fuyu’ trees that were grafted onto R-a was retarded compared to the growth of trees that were grafted onto ‘MKR1’ throughout most of the growing period. Heavy disbudding (HD) effectively increased the fruit weight of the ‘Hiratanenashi’ trees that were grafted onto ‘MKR1’ in a certain time period in stage I and in stage III compared to normal disbudding. HD also improved the fruit growth of the ‘Fuyu’ trees that were grafted onto ‘MKR1’, although this was not as effective as the ‘Hiratanenashi’ fruit growth. The weight of the harvested ‘Fuyu’ trees’ fruit increased in the following order: R-a, ‘MKR1’, O-R, and S. The ‘Hiratanenashi’ trees that were grafted onto ‘MKR1’ had the lightest fruit among the rootstocks, but the HD treatment for the trees that had been grafted onto ‘MKR1’ increased the fruit weight, and the difference disappeared. The soluble solids concentration of ‘Fuyu’ fruit was the highest in ‘MKR1’ and the lowest in R-a. ‘Hiratanenashi’ fruit had the highest concentration of soluble solids in S and the lowest concentration in O-R. The level of firmness of ‘Fuyu’ fruit flesh was the hardest in ‘MKR1’ and the softest in R-a, whereas the level of firmness of ‘Hiratanenashi’ fruit was the same among the rootstocks. Although the <i>a</i>* value of ‘Fuyu’ fruit skin color was the same among the rootstocks, the <i>a</i>* value skin color of ‘Hiratanenashi’ fruit was the highest in ‘MKR1’ and R-a and the lowest in S. These results suggest that the persimmon rootstock partly affects growth and quality of the fruit, although there are differences in the reactions between scion cultivars.

The evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds is an example of parallel evolution, through which genes encoding herbicide target proteins are repeatedly represented as evolutionary targets. The number of herbicide target-site genes differs among species, and little is known regarding the effects of duplicate gene copies on the evolution of herbicide resistance. We investigated the evolution of herbicide resistance in Monochoria vaginalis, which carries five copies of sulfonylurea target-site acetolactate synthase (ALS) genes. Suspected resistant populations collected across Japan were investigated for herbicide sensitivity and ALS gene sequences, followed by functional characterization and ALS gene expression analysis. We identified over 60 resistant populations, all of which carried resistance-conferring amino acid substitutions exclusively in MvALS1 or MvALS3. All MvALS4 alleles carried a loss-of-function mutation. Although the enzymatic properties of ALS encoded by these genes were not markedly different, the expression of MvALS1 and MvALS3 was prominently higher among all ALS genes. The higher expression of MvALS1 and MvALS3 is the driving force of the biased representation of genes during the evolution of herbicide resistance in M. vaginalis. Our findings highlight that gene expression is a key factor in creating evolutionary hotspots.

To determine the distribution pattern of weeds in soybean field of Oita prefecture, field surveys were conducted from mid-August to September (the growing stage of soybean) and November (the maturing stage of soybean) in 2015 and 2016, respectively. The dominance of each weed in different fields was evaluated at six levels based on the observations made in the fields. Moreover, the percentage of occurrence of each weed was calculated from the data obtained. The weed species with high percentage of occurrence (occurring in more than 30% fields) were <i>Echinochloa</i> spp., <i>Digitaria ciliaris</i> (Retz.) Koeler, <i>Amaranthus hybridus</i> L., <i>Physalis angulata</i> L. var. <i>angulata</i> and <i>Commelina caroliniana</i> Walter. Among the invasive weeds with high percentage of occurrence, <i>A. hybridus</i> L. and <i>P. angulata</i> L. var. <i>angulata</i> occurred over the entire Oita Prefecture, but <i>C. caroliniana</i> Walter occurred mainly in the northern region. This is probably because <i>C. caroliniana</i> Walter invaded the soybean field later than did the other two species. The weeds with medium occurrence percentage in the fields were those found in the northern region; <i>C. caroliniana</i> Walter was more abundant than <i>A. hybridus</i> L. and <i>P. angulata</i> L. var. <i>angulata</i>. From these results, it can be said that <i>C. caroliniana</i> Walter might spread quickly after invading the soybean fields. In addition, four invasive <i>Ipomoea</i> spp. and <i>Sicyos angulatus</i> L. were confirmed to be present in the soybean field. This is first time that the presence of <i>S. angulatus</i> L. in the soybean fields of Kyushu region is being confirmed.

Low temperature have been broadly applied for storage technique of various vegetable and crops. Sweetpotato is one of the most popular crops grown in tropical and temperature regions. Because sweetpotato, originated from semi-tropical plants, is susceptible to cold stress, severe chilling stress by itself causes deterioration and/or irreversible damage in sweetpotato tuber tissues. However, mechanisms involved in physiological and biochemical changes of sweetpotato under chilling stress remain unclear. Thus, we focused on the gene expression profiles of cold stress-responsive transcriptional factors and carbohydrate metabolisms of sweetpotato in response to chilling stress. A sweetpotato homolog of Drought Responsive Element Binding factor (swDREB) is induced in sweetpotato within 6 h after treatment of chilling stresses. The expression of swDREB under chilling stress was maintained until 3 d. Chilling stress sequentially upregulated the expression of β-amylase (β-AMY) and trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP). Increase of amylase activity and sugar content was also observed in sweet potato under chilling stress, These results suggest that swDREB mediates the expression of β-AMY and TPP via a cold stress-responsive transcription factor cascade, leading to degradation of starch in sweetpotato tuber and accumulation of maltose and trehalose.

We evaluated the allelopathic effects of Canna indica on paddy weeds. Aqueous extracts (1, 2,4, 8 %, w/v) from its powdered naturally withered aerial parts inhibited the seed germination and seedling growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and two major weed spp. [bamyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli L.) and monchoria (Monocharia vaginalis P.)]. All C. indica dried powders at 50, 100, 150 gm-2 significantly inhibited the emergence and dry weights of weeds in paddy field but had no adverse effects on growth of transplanted rice. These results showed that C. indica plants might be used as a natural herbicide to control weeds in paddy field.

Saururaceae (Houttuynia cordata Thunb) has been known to be a medicinal plant. This experiment was conducted to determine the potential of saururaceae dried powders for weed control in transplanted rice. All aqueous extracts (1%, 2%, 4%, 8%, w/v) from the dried powders of terrestrial saururaceae (Houttuynia cordata Thunb) inhibited the germination and initial seedling growths for lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and major two weed species, viz., Echinochloa and Monocharia in rice paddy field of Japan, indicating that there existed certain inhibitory allelo-chemicals for weed growth in saururaceae plant. In addition, all treatments (25, 50, 100, 150 gm-2) of the saururaceae dried powders significantly inhibited emergence and dry weights of weeds in paddy field and had not adverse effects of transplanted rice. From these results, the dwarf lilyturf plants might be used as a natural herbicide to control weeds in rice field. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We investigated the seed size, growth, and seed production of tropical spiderwort (Commelina benghalensis L.), an annual weed in the Commelinaceae, under different emergence times and shading conditions. This species produces two types of seeds in capsules on its aerial and subterranean parts. We compared the sizes of a larger seed in the posticous locule of indehiscence and two to four smaller seeds in the anticous locule of a capsule. The large subterranean seeds were the longest, widest, and thickest of all the types of seeds, whereas the small aerial seeds were the shortest, narrowest, and thinnest. The plants that emerged from the aerial seeds in June were the tallest and had the most primary branches of those that emerged from March to September, reaching a maximum length of about 98cm and having 12 branches per plant. The plants that emerged in May produced flowers the quickest, 21 days, and the plants that emerged in September took the longest, 42 days. It took 80 days for the plants that emerged in May to drop their seeds, which was the longest period, although seeds were not produced in those that emerged in September. Aerial seed production was the highest in the plants that emerged in April, producing about 720 large and 2,300 small seeds per plant. These April plants also produced the most inflorescences and large and small seeds born in the soil. The plants grown under 82% relative light intensity had the longest plant lengths and the most primary branches of all of the plants grown under shading or non-shading conditions, reaching about 54cm length and having six branches per plant. These plants also produced the most aerial seeds, as each plant produced about 71 large and 143 small seeds, and the most inflorescences and large and small seeds born in the soil.

This study was conducted to identify the QTLs controlling the allelopathic effect of rice on lettuce root growth using recombinant inbred (RI) lines derived from a cross between a Japonica cultivar (Asominori) and an indica cultivar (IR24). A total of three QTLs associated with allelopathic effect on lettuce root growth were identified and mapped to chromosomes 2, 8 and 11. The QTL with the largest effect, qAE-11, located between markers C1003A and C1172, was mapped to chromosome 11 and explained 15.34% of total variation in allelopathic effect. The other two QTLs, qAE-2 on chromosome 2 and qAE-8 on chromosome 8, explained 6.31% and 7.14% of the variation, respectively. The tightly linked molecular markers that flank the QTLs, detected in this study, may be useful for genetic improvement of allelopathy in rice using marker-assisted selection. © International Allelopathy Foundation 2006.

また,イネの分げつ角度に関する7つのQTLs(qTA-2, qTA-4, qTA-7, qTA-8, qTA-9, qTA-11, qTA-12)が第2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11および12染色体上において検出された.

Dwarf lilyturf (Ophiopogonjaponicus K.), used as a weed-suppressing cover crop and a medicinal plant, was suggested to be a promising natural herbicide to control weeds in the rice field through its allelopathic potential. Allelopathic chemicals from the dwarf lilyturf were identified and their growth-inhibiting effects on two major weeds in the rice field in Japan were examined. High pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC) analysis showed the existence of at least six allelopathic chemicals, viz., salicylic acid, syringic acid, syringaldehyde, vanillic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and sinapic acid in dwarf lilyturf plant. The chemical detected at the highest concentration was salicylic acid (251.04 μg g^<-1>), which occupied more than half of total allelopathic chemicals detected (317.16 μg g^<-1>), followed by syringic acid (37.30 μg g^<-1>), syringaldehyde(13.30 μg g^<-1>) and sinapic acid (11.03 μg g^<-1>). The chemicals detected at the lowest concentration was vanillic acid (1.69 μg g^<-1>). Salicylic acid displayed the most inhibitory effects on germination and growth of both barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgalli L.) and monchoria (Monochoria vaginalis P.). This compound might play a key role in dwarf lilyturf allelopathy.

Four higher plants, namely glory bowers (Clerodendrum trichotomum L.), jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.), beggarweed (Desmodium triflorum L.) and Chinaberry (Melia azedarach L.), with the strong allelopathic potential among 19 allelopathic species from Southeast Asia, were tested for their effects on weed emergence in paddy soil and field. In a greenhouse experiment, D. stramonium, D. triflorum and M. azedarach exhibited similar inhibitory magnitude at 1 t ha-1 achieving more than 90 % weed control. C. trichotomum achieved about 70 % weed reduction at 2 t ha-1. In paddy fields, D. triflorum was the most promising material for weed control and attained the highest rice yield among treatments, at the concentration of 2 t ha-1, whereas the inhibition of D. stramonium and M. azedarach was weakened in the greenhouse. No injury of rice plants was observed. These plants might be used as natural herbicides to reduce the dependence on synthetic herbicides.

Acidic fractions of the extracts from the three alfalfa cultivars Batasu, Rasen, and Yuba exhibited a varietial difference in the inhibitory effect on hypocotyls and radicle growth of alfalfa (cv. Nasuwakaba) and rice (cv. Koshihikari) seedlings. The extract from Rasen possessed the strongest inhibitory activity, and that of Batasu was the lowest. In a TLC bioassay with lettuce seedlings, inhibitory zones of the extracts were located at an Rf value of 0.6-0.8, and maximum exhibitory zones at Rfs of 0.7-0.8. However, the extracts of Rasen and Yuba contained an additional inhibitory zone at Rf of 0.1-0.2. Inhibitory zones were analyzed by HPLC. Eight phenolic compounds were identified in the extracts from Rasen and Batasu, and six compounds in that from Yuba. However, the content of these phenolic compounds varied with the cultivar. The content of each phenolic compound was the highest in Rasen, followed by Yuba and Batasu, although the content of p-hydroxybenzoic acid was equivalent in all cultivars. We suppose that the degree of inhibitory exhibition of allelopathy may be related to the presence and concentrations of allelochemicals (phenolic compounds), however, the allelopathic activity of the plant might be determined by interactions of all these compounds, not just a single chemical.

Allelopathic potential of velvetbean (Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC. Var. utilis) cultivated in temperate zone of Southern Kyusyu Island was studied. Furthermore, effects of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), which has known as a allelochemical of the plants, on the initial growth of sweet corn (Zea mays L.) and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were evaluated. On the substitutive design experiment in upland field, the growth of sweet corn was promoted under the mixed planting with velvetbean, as reported on the previous studies. However, the effect on the growth of sweet pepper was not confirmed. These results were the same as those of container experiment were, and the dry weights of shoot and root of sweet corn increased in the mixed planting with velvetbean. The initial growth of sweet corn planted in the upland soil incorporated with the lower concentrations of L-DOPA was better, especially in the lengths of organs, such as second leaves and totals of crown roots, than that without L-DOPA (control), whereas there was no or negative effect of the higher concentrations on the growth and the lengths were almost the same or became shorter than those of untreated control. In sweet pepper, regardless of whether the concentration of L-DOPA was low or high, the lengths of organs, such as cotyledon, hypocotyl, tap root and total of crown roots, became longer than those of control, and the promotive effect of the initial growth was confirmed.

Kava is a perennial pepper plant from the Oceanic region, which is commonly used as a drink by natives and for pharmacological purposes. Results of this study concluded that Kava has allelopathic potential and suppressed germination and growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L), barnyardgrass (E. crus-galli Beauv var. formosensis Ohwi.), and duck-tongue weed (M. vaginalis Presl var. plantaginea Solms-Laub.) Moreover, Kava inhibited emergence of weeds in paddy soils. The inhibition of Kava became stronger as the applied concentration increased. In a greenhouse experiment, Kava had the greatest inhibition on emergence and weed growth in paddy soils when a dose of 1 ton ha-1 of Kava was divided and applied at 3, 16, and 23 days after watering. Inhibition by Kava varied among weed species. Results from this study suggest that Kava might be useful for weed control in rice or reduce dependence on herbicide.

We investigated growth and adhering strength to the soil surface of a paddy field of <i>Monochoria vaginalis</i> (Burm. f.) Kunth seedlings after applying bensulfuron-methyl (BSM) and benthiocarb (BTC). Juvenile seedlings of <i>M. vaginalis</i> could not adhere to the paddy soil surface after soil treatment with 1ppm of BSM, but treatments with concentrations lower than 0.01ppm did not inhibit their adhesion to soil. Both lengths of their seminal roots and total crown roots after treatment with 0.0001ppm of BSM became longer than those of the untreated control (UTC) by the fifth day after seeding. There were about 100 hypocotyl hairs per seedling in seedlings treated with all concentrations, and lengths of the longest hypocotyl hair were almost the same as those of UTC on the fifth day after seeding. <i>M. vaginalis</i> seedlings could not grow and adhere to soil after treatment with 1ppm BTC. The growth of <i>M. vaginalis</i> seedlings was about the same as or a little less than those of UTC in treatments at concentrations less of than 0.1ppm. The number of hypocotyl hairs and lengths of the longest hypocotyl hair per seedling were similar for all BTC treatment concentrations compared with those in UTC for 5 days after seeding. Adhering strengths of juvenile seedlings of <i>M. vaginalis</i> in UTC were 2.3g, while those treated with 0.001 and 0.0001ppm of BSM were 1.8g and 2.6g at the third day after seeding. The strengths increased and became twice those of UTC on the fifth day after seeding. In BTC, their adhering strengths were less than those of UTC five days after seeding under all treatment concentrations.
