This study assesses the impact of defoliation applied to three developmental stages across three cropping seasons from 2021 to 2023 on growth, yield and forage quality in maize. The experimental design included three treatments: defoliation of three expanded leaves at the 3rd–4th leaf stage (DF1), the 5th–6th expanded leaves by leaf punch (DF2) and expanding leaves with the DF2 treatment (DF3) at the 6th–7th leaf stages, compared with no defoliation (control). Over three years, the most significant decrease in dry matter (DM) yield occurred in DF1 during spring sowing, while in summer sowing, the largest reduction was in DF3, both of which were correlated with changes in the number of grains per ear. The DM yields at harvest were positively correlated with plant leaf areas at the silking stage. The digestibility of forage in in vitro DM decreased concomitantly with an increase in acid detergent fiber content, indicating a decrease in forage quality. Given the frequent severe damage observed in summer sown maize and the detrimental effects of early growth stage leaf feeding on quality and quantity of spring sown maize, the application of registered insecticides is advised to reduce pest damage to maize crops.

This study aims to identify the composition and yields of forages in natural pastures using principal component analysis and cluster dendrogram in Gilireng and Majauleng subdistricts, Wajo regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Pasture plants were collected using 20 randomly sampled quadrats to observe the botanical composition and yields of forages. The collected data regarding legume classification is analyzed by Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) with PCA and dendrogram clustering by using R version 4.2.2. The botanical composition of natural pastures was majored by grasses, followed by legumes and weeds in both Subdistricts and the pasture total dry yields were 9.01 and 5.20 t/ha in Gilireng and Majauleng subdistricts, respectively, to show the carrying capacity at 2.56 and 1.44 animal unit/ha, respectively. Principal component analysis for the biplot between the subdistricts and villages revealed the superior extensiveness of dimension 1 to dimension 2, but only a few types of outliner plants remained. Dimension 1 has a high kurtosis of 66.2%, while dimension 2 has a variance accounting for 26.5%. Furthermore, dendrogram analysis indicated that the agglomerative coefficient's combination between plants and environments was approximated at 0.84 and the dissimilarity value accounted for 30%. This indicates a high level of similarity or cohesion to the grouping between legumes and sampling locations in Wajo district, South Sulawesi. The use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) contributed effectively and quickly to the recognition and classification of legumes present in the study.

Background and Objective: Interest in improving the agronomic traits of Leucaena tarramba has relatively increased to select productive varieties by plant breeding through gamma irradiation. Therefore, assessing the study of genetic diversity in Leucaena tarramba using RAPD markers is an important initial step to understand the genetic makeup of this species and its potential for improvement. Materials and Methods: In this study, RAPD markers was used to assess the genetic variability of some individuals based on the dose of gamma radiation treatment. By 10 primers used, four primers have successfully amplified the bands, consisting of OPA-05, OPA-09, OPD-03 and OPA-18 primers. Results: The informative band average of 3.25 NPB, 1.25 number of NMB and polymorphism of 21.32%. The genetic profiles such as, PIC, MI and EMR averaged 0.35, 17.60 and 44.50 per primer, respectively. Analysis of RAPD markers with dendrogram clustering revealed no significant genetic differences between Leucaena leucocephala and Leucaena tarramba. Irradiation dosages ranging from 250-750 Gy are closely linked, while a dose of 500 Gy shows the highest genetic distance. Conclusion: The informative band indicating a high level of effectiveness and reliability of the markers applied where 500 Gy is the most distant genetic relationship compared to other treatments. Furthermore, primer selection including OPA-05, OPA-09, OPD-03 and OPA-18, serves as a valuable information in biomolecular analysis of mutant Leucaena tarramba.

This study aimed to assess the behavior and stress status of pregnant sows following supplementation with Italian ryegrass silage (IRS) and the impact of feeding the IRS on feeding costs. Six sows with an initial body weight (BW) of 238.6 ± 5.9 kg were allotted to a 6 × 3 Latin square design with a 5-day acclimatization period followed by a 5-day data collection period. A commercial diet was replaced by IRS on a dry matter (DM) basis up to 0%, 9%, and 13% in the control treatment and the two test treatments, respectively. Apart from collecting data on daily feed intake and BW, urine was collected, and video footage was recorded for the last day of each treatment for analysis of urinary cortisol and behavior. There were no leftovers with all diets and nutrient uptake was unaffected (p > 0.05), while BW gain decreased (p < 0.05) to be a limited range from 1% to 3%, with increased inclusion of IRS. Both the behavior of sows and cortisol concentration were unaffected (p > 0.05). Furthermore, it was estimated that feeding 13% DM of IRS would reduce feed costs by 17%. IRS would be acceptable in replacing up to 13% of the commercial diet and cutting feeding costs.
