    Background:
    Mixed cropping of forage grasses and legumes can potentially improve the performance of herbivores. However, the feasibility of grasses mixed-cropped with legumes should be examined at different plant densities.

    Aim:
    This study aimed to evaluate the growth characters and forage chemical composition in dwarf napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) with Indigofera (Indigofera zollingeriana) grown using alley cropping.

    Methods:
    Three densities of dwarf napiergrass with Indigofera, i.e., high density (2 and 1 plants m-2, respectively); medium density (1.33 and 1 plants m-2, respectively); and low density (1 and 1 plants m-2, respectively) were applied under rainfed conditions in Makassar.

    Results:
    Plant density significantly affected growth characteristics, such as plant height and tiller density in dwarf napiergrass (p<0.05), and non-significantly affected plant height and branch density (p>0.05) in Indigofera. Plant density did not affect the yielding ability at the first defoliation and annual total of yields (p>0.05), except at the second defoliation when the dry matter production of dwarf napiergrass peaked in the low plant density treatment (p<0.05). In terms of chemical composition, plant density significantly affected fiber concentrations of acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber, which were lowest at low plant densities (p<0.05). The acid detergent lignin and cellulose concentrations tended to be lower at low plant densities, but the differences were not significant (p>0.05).

    Conclusion:
    We consider that alley cropping systems for dwarf napiergrass and Indigofera are suitable if low plant densities are employed in the region.

    Aim of this study is to evaluate the utilization of cocoa pulp as an
    alternative feedstuff source for the performance and blood metabolite
    profiles of dry-lot fattening Bali steers. Nine fattening Bali steers were
    randomly assigned to experimental diets, composed of three levels of cocoa
    pulp of 0, 5 and 10% with reducing levels of milled corn composition at 20,
    14 and 8%, designated as ED0 (control), ED1 and ED2, respectively, under
    a completely randomized design. Herbages, consisted of dwarf napiergrass
    (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Mott) at 90% and Indigofera sp. at 10%, were
    fed at fresh matter basis 60%, with the experimental diet at 40%. Dry Matter
    Intake (DMI) tended to be higher in ED1 than in ED2 without significant
    difference (p>0.05) among treatments. The Average Daily Gain (ADG)
    decreased from 0.74 kg/head/day in ED0 to 0.43 kg/head/day in ED2, while
    that in ED1 did not decrease from ED0. The effect of experimental diets did
    not differ significantly (p>0.05) on body performance, hematological or
    biochemical parameters. The results indicated that the experimental diet did
    not affect the hematological or biochemical parameters; however, the
    feedstuff mixed with cocoa pulp at 5% showed a comparable average daily
    gain in fattening Bali steers with control.

     西南暖地における矮性ネピアグラス(DL)の乾草利用の可能性を明らかにするため,乾物収量,1番草乾草の飼料成分含量および黒毛和種繁殖牛の採食性を,ローズグラス品種カタンボラ(Rg)乾草と比較調査した.乾物収量では,DLがRgと比べて,1番草で16%,2番草で6各々各々高かったが,生育期間が長かったため,個体群成長速度(CGR)ではDLがRgに比べて低くなった.DLは調製期間が盛夏であったが7日間を要した.乾草の飼料成分含量は,DLがRgに比べて,粗タンパク質含量およびin vitro乾物消化率が有意に高く,中性デタージェントファイバー(NDF)含量およびヘミセルロース含量が有意に低く,長期保存が可能な乾草でも良質な粗飼料が調製できた.黒毛和種繁殖牛4頭による乾物摂取量でみた採食性の評価には,DLとRgには大差なかった.したがって,西南暖地ではDLは,青刈り,サイレージ調製,放牧利用に加えて,乾草調製でも良質な粗飼料を確保できる新たな利用法を提案した.

    Pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) is an annual summer forage crop that exhibits high dry matter (DM)production in the mid-summer season (July-September), but its seasonal productivity is not accurately known in southern Kyushu. Therefore, we examined the seasonal productivity of pearl millet by sowing four times at five-week intervals in mid-May, late June, late July, and early September to clarify whether the crop is a suitable substitute for harvesting maize early in maturity and would stabilize annual total forage yields before the winter crop is sown. With ncreasing effective cumulative temperature (base temperature at 10°C), plant height and crop growth rate increased linearly to 220 cm and above 40 g m2 day-1, respectively, and plant dry weight had a qadratic response to cumulative solar radiation across sowing dates. These relationships were similar in different growing seasons and at different sites. As a result, the dry weight of the crop at 8-11 weeks after sowing was around 1200 g DM m-2, as much as the maize yield. The most optimal date for sowing was late July, suggesting that the present pearl millet cultivar can be used as a substitute for early-harvested maize over the whole summer cropping season in this region.

    A triple cropping system, combining spring maize, pearl millet, and twice-cut blast disease resistant Italian ryegrass, was examined for the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 growing seasons to achieve quality herbage production in Miyazaki, southern Kyushu, Japan. The growth of the three crops reached to harvest, even though typhoon and heavy rainfall occurred. Annual dry matter (DM) yield of the triple crops was 4098 g m−2 and 4349 g m−2 in the first and second cropping seasons, respectively. The observed total digestible nutrients (TDN) were higher in spring maize (up to 68.2% and 76.8%), pearl millet (up to 60.0% and 67.9%), and Italian ryegrass (up to 71.6% and 68.6%), during the first and second season, respectively, leading to an annual TDN yield of 2357 g m−2 and 2938 g m−2. The results suggest that the present established triple cropping system is feasible for obtaining high yields with more digestible nutrients in the forages.

    In order to increase the range of forage species that are rich in nutrients, the growth and yield attributes of the pseudocereal, amaranth (Amaranthus hypochondriacus), was assessed for cultivation in southern Kyushu. The growth characteristics of amaranth were compared with four small-grain cereal species in the family Poaceae, such as proso millet (Panicum miliaceum), foxtail millet (Setaria italica), Japanese barnyard millet (Echinochloa esculenta) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) after spring-sowing in 2020. Since the amaranth seed was not yet mature at the time of peak growth in this study, it may be easier to sow this crop directly in the field instead of using paper-pots and transplanting

    In our previous presentation (Kadwal et al., 2017), grazing potential on foggage dwarf napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach) pasture was examined to find almost complete herbage consumption (>80% of herbage mass) by a 4-time grazing treatment in a period of 1-4 months after the first frost damage. However, it is necessary to determine the effect of foggage grazing on overwintering ability of dwarf napiergrass and grazing feasibility on fresh grass pasture in summer period. Thus, the present study examined the year-round grazing potential of dwarf napiergrass for breeding beef cows in southern Kyushu.
    Herbage mass was roughly comparable between the two genotypes in the first grazing cycle, while it decreased considerably for the dwarf genotype in the second cycle and in the regrowth plants. However, the herbage consumption tended to be similar between genotypes and moreover, dry matter intake (DMI) tended to be higher for the dwarf than for the semi-dwarf genotype in the first cycle. LW gain increased with grazing, averaging 0.79 kg/head/day with 19.4 g DM/kg LW/day of DMI for 56 days when grazing fresh grass in the summer. The regrowth herbage mass suggested the potential of an additional 34 days of foggage grazing to sum to 90 days of year-round grazing without any additional feed supply in the system.

    南九州では,自給粗飼料の確保がネックとなり,近年小規模経営体が減少し,飼養頭数の減少を招いている。暖地型牧草矮性ネピアグラスは, 本地域では多年生で放牧利用に適するが,暖地型牧草は,降霜で地上部が枯死するため,従来放牧利用期間は降霜前に限定されていた。一方我々は,矮性ネピアグラスに放牧馴致した繁殖牛群では,秋季に休牧・貯草後霜枯れした草地に放牧しても,被食性や増体性に夏季生育期間と大差がないことを見出した。本研究では,夏季と冬季に繁殖牛群を矮性ネピアグラス草地に輪換放牧し,被食性や増体性,霜枯れ草の炭水化物含量等を検討することにより,本地域の省力的な繁殖牛周年放牧管理法として提案したい。そこで,南九州の小規模繁殖牛農家が,暖地型牧草矮性ネピアグラス草地を夏季に輪換放牧した後秋季に休牧・貯草(Autumn-Saved Pasture, 以下ASP)管理を行うことにより,降霜後の冬季にも夏季と同様な輪換放牧飼養が可能であるか,その場合の草量,増体性などに悪影響がないか,経年 変化を含めて検証したい。次いで,降霜後の気象条件次第では,矮性ネピアグラスに対する放牧家畜の選好性が向上する傾向が伺われた。この際,採食行動に差異をもたらす要因として,霜枯れによる葉身および茎中の構造性・非構造性炭水化物含量の変化の実態を明らかにしたい。これらを通じ,本地域の小規模繁殖牛農家における省力的な放牧管理方法としての有効性を明らかにしたい。

    南九州地域に存在する条件不利地の中で,特に宮崎県児湯郡管内に約100 ha存在する口蹄疫家畜埋却地,および全国に約40万haある耕作放棄地を,飼料生産あるいはバイオ燃料原料などの資源植物生産に活用することが望まれている。低コストで持続的な生産を行うためには,家畜堆肥を活用しながら,これらの土地における矮性ネピアグラス(DL)を中心としたネピアグラス栽培の適応性を検討する必要がある。そこで,宮崎県児湯郡内の1)口蹄疫家畜埋却地における飼料作物としてのDL栽培の適応性,2)耕作放棄地における資源作物としてのネピアグラス栽培の適応性を,既往の研究成果を継続発展させる形で実施し,飼料・食料自給率の向上と小規模肉用繁殖牛農家の維持・育成に寄与できることを目指す。

    ネピアグラス矮性晩生品種(DL)の南九州地域への適応性とDL草地の省力的、永続的な繁殖牛飼養体系の確立を3ヵ年間検討した。その結果、南九州低標高地ではDLは越冬期間の最低気温の極値が-6.2℃以下で越冬率が急減する(石井ら2006;Ishii et al. 2008)が、DL-追播イタリアンライグラス草地は、造成2年目以降年間約130~160日間輪換放牧可能で、DLの草高を約100~110cmに保てば、造成後少なくとも5ヵ年間、家畜増体性(約0.5kg/日)と利用率(約50%)の高い草地を維持でき(石井ら2007)、このことは南九州の平均的頭数の繁殖牛群でも実証された(石井ら 2009)ことから、和牛繁殖の新たな飼養体系として提起された。
