We report results of 6.7 keV emission-line mapping observations of the Galactic center region. The 6.7 keV emission line is attributable to a helium-like iron K-shell transition in an optically thin hot plasma of a temperature about 108K. The surface brightness distribution of the plasma is elliptical with a major axis of 1°.8 (FWHM) and an axial ratio of about 0.5. The major axis is tilted about 20° with respect to the Galactic plane. We also determined the total flux and surface brightness of the extended X-ray emission in the continuum j• X-ray band to be (1-3) × 10-9ergs s-1cm-2and (2-5) ×10-6ergs s-1cm-2sr-1in 2-10 keV, respectively. The equivalent width of the iron line is estimated to be 500-1300 eV, consistent with the value expected for a cosmic iron abundance. Several possibilities of the origin of the extended plasma are considered.

We observed the Cygnus Loop with the large area counter on board Ginga in the energy range above 1.5 keV. The observation was performed in a scanning mode along two different directions: one parallel to and the other perpendicular to the Galactic plane. The spatial structure shows that the emission region above 1.5 keV is narrower than that below 1 keV while their centers coincide well with each other. Furthermore, it shows a center-filled structure (plerion-type) rather than a shell structure. The emission above 1.5 keV is not well correlated with the optical nebula. Our data show that a high-temperature, low-density plasma fills the interior of the Cygnus Loop and is surrounded by a low-temperature, high-density plasma shell. The luminosity above 1.5 keV from the plasma filled inside the Loop is 2 × 1033ergs s-1which is about 40 times stronger than that predicted with the strong shock model.

Characterizations of multilayer reflectors were performed in the wavelength range 3-10 nm using synchrotron radiation. Layer spacing of the multilayers, which were fabricated by the electron beam vapour deposition method, exists in the range 6-10 nm. Evaluation of multilayers was carried out by measuring the reflectivity, the wavelength resolution and the Bragg angle on the beam line for radiometric calibration (BL5B) in the UVSOR facility. The incident photon beam was monochromatized by a plane grating monochrometer. Reflectivity was measured for both s and p components using a demountable rotational stage. The peak reflectivity was found to be in the range of 1-10%, and the reflectivities of both polarization components showed the most pronounced difference at an incidence angle of 45°, which proves that the multilayer is also useful as an X-ray polarimeter. © 1990.

GINGA observations of the cluster of galaxies Abell 2218 show that its spectrum is well fitted by an isothermal model with temperature 6.7+0.5-0.4 keV. Abell 2218 is the cluster in whose direction the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect has been searched for most intensively. Assuming a value of -0.69 ±0.10 mK for the central SZ decrement (Birkinshaw), and calculating the radial gas density distribution by deprojecting the X-ray surface brightness, we derive a value for the Hubble constant, for a uniform cluster gas, H0=24+13-10 km s-1 Mpc-1. Possible reasons for the discrepancy between this value and the currently accepted higher values derived with other techniques are explored.

We have fabricated multilayer reflectors of molybdenum-carbon, molybdenum-silicon, and nickel-carbon for x rays of 1-200 Å with an electron beam evaporation method in ultrahigh vacuum. The multilayers were deposited on flat and figured substrates of float glass and superpolished glass with a surface roughness of 2-3 Å (rms). The thickness of a layer pair and the number of layer pairs were 30-100 Å and 10-20, respectively. The x-ray characteristics of these multilayer reflectors were evaluated in the 1.5-200 Å region with characteristic x rays (Cu-Kα, Si-Kα, Al-Kα, and C-Kα) and monochromatized synchrotron radiation. Peak reflectivities of molybdenum-carbon were found to be 70% at Cu-Kα and 40% at Al-Kα in grazing incidence and those of molybdenum-silicon to be more than 30% in the 150-170 Å band in near-normal incidence. On the basis of these experimental results, the x-ray optical properties of multilayers are discussed.

THE Galactic Centre, although obscured by dust at optical wavelengths, is luminous in higher-energy radiation. Gamma-ray observations suggest that a large number of supernovae or novae, or a single supermassive object, has exploded in the Galactic Centre1. Such an explosion will heat up the interstellar medium, probably creating an optically thin hot plasma. Here we report the discovery of intense iron-line emission at 6.7 keV from the Galactic Centre, detected by the Ginga satellite, with characteristics consistent with its production by a shock-heated plasma. The line intensity peaks at the Galactic Centre with a surface brightness of ∼1.5 x 10-7erg s-1sr-1cm-2and extends over an angular size of 1.8°. The total luminosity of the iron line at the centre region is ∼2.1 x 1036erg s-1assuming that the distance to the centre is 10 kpc. The line intensity at the centre is about ten times larger than that from the region of the galactic ridge. The line feature observed is consistent with thermal emission from a thin hot plasma at a temperature of ∼10 keV. The abundance of iron is estimated to be comparable to or larger than the cosmic abundance. This thin hot plasma is attributable to a shock-heated interstellar medium by an energetic explosion. © 1989 Nature Publishing Group.

We have discovered a new hard X-ray source near supernova 1987 A, in the Large Magellanic Cloud, from the X-ray astronomy satellite Ginga. The present error box of 0.2°×0.3°includes the supernova. The energy spectrum is very hard above 10 keV and unusual for any of the known classes of X-ray source. The flux in the range 10-30 keV as of 2-3 September is ~5×10-11ergcm-2s-1. The source intensity increased steadily throughout July, August and early September, but an observation in late September revealed no further increase. The positional agreement, a steady brightening and an unusual hard spectrum support the identification of the source as SN1987A. © 1987 Nature Publishing Group.
