In this study, we developed a high-performance levee mower. The developed levee mower can be equipped with a stable running device and can automatically run along a levee. The developed mower is an electromotive-type device with a remote-control operation. The device is adaptable to both levees and slopes. From the field test results, the work efficiency of the developed levee mower was 151.0 min/10 a when used on levees and 99.1 min/10 a when used on slopes. By operating the remote control unit, the heavy workload was reduced, and the noise, exhaust gas emission, and vibration were less pronounced when compared with those of mowers available in the market. Therefore, the mowing surroundings of the operator improved significantly.

Because the skin of sweet potatoes is relatively delicate and easily scratched, farmers manually remove the secondary roots instead of employing a machine to prepare the tuberous roots before shipment. Thus, this study focuses on the development of a threading method, which uses cotton kite string as threads, for the removal of secondary roots of sweet potatoes. The threading mechanism entails twisting the secondary roots at the intersection of two crossing threads. The results of root drawing resistance measurements were 2.68-N average and 9.94-N maximum; additionally, the minimum drawing force was required as 10 N. Lastly, the maximum pulling force was found to be approximately 40 N; it was also confirmed that the pulling force and thread thickness had a directly proportional relationship.

Harvesting strawberries requires high labor costs and long working hours. In order to reduce the labor burden in agriculture, robotic automation is very much desired. Especially, there is a strong demand for the automated harvesting and grading of ripe and soft strawberries, as such takes tend to take long working hours and requires special attention not to damage the fruits. A Cartesiantype strawberry-harvesting robot was developed for in-row hilltop culture. The robot consists of two color cameras (wide-view and detail cameras), a harvesting hand, a fiber-optic sensor and a mobile control unit. The robot can detect the fruit, evaluate its ripeness and pick strawberries by cutting its peduncles. Experimental performance tests showed that the robot could accurately detect the fruits (93.6% efficiency) and harvest samples with more than 50% ripeness level. Some difficulty was observed in accurately detecting the fruit peduncles (70.8% efficiency), Execution time for successfully harvesting a single fruit was about 16.6 s. The result of the testing indicated the potential of harvesting robot with a harvesting hand as well as automatic harvesting algorithm function. Copyright © 2013 American Scientific Publishers.

An traditional pipeline system for water pumping and conveyance has designed to include a flywheel and other facilities for suppressing negative pressure to a depth of 7 m or below in order to prevent water column separation. If the occurrence point of water column separation and the influence of the separation on the pipeline can be accurately identified, an optimal design can be adopted for each pipeline, which permits water column separation to occur without inflicting damage. Field experiments were conducted for evaluating water column separation during a pump power failure and the resulting water hammer pressure caused by recombination of the columns. The effect of implementing a general-purpose check valve or the non-water hammer pressure check valve was investigated. When restarting a pump after a sudden stop, it was found that a pressure rise can be suppressed by opening the bypass valve of the non-water hammer check valve. In addition, it was found that using an independent air choke valve to draw in air during times of negative pressure prevented the spread of the negative-pressure region and thus suppressed water column separation. The field experiments revealed that safety of pipeline is ensured by preventing recombination of the separated water columns, at the regions where water column separation is generated by the negative pressure.

The contour lines of emission gas maps and power take off (PTO) power performance curves for a variety of exhaust types were used to express the discharge characteristics the tractor exhausts. The gasses investigated were Bosch smoke, nitrogen oxide (NO<SUB>x</SUB>), carbon monoxide (CO), and total hydrocarbons (THC). The discharge characteristics associated with the operating range of the engine were expressed in three dimensions. Using these maps, general discharge performance values for each exhaust were calculated by combining fuel consumption and the discharge characteristics. In addition, working curves for the reduction of exhaust emissions were developed. It is proposed that running an engine on such a working curve reduces exhaust emissions.

This paper was carried on a strawberry harvesting robot which can precisely harvest the fruit without damage through cutting and holding the peduncle for strawberries grown on annual hill tops. This second study proposed an image processing method for the ripeness judgment of fruits and the recognition of the peduncle, and described the fabrication of the picking hand. The ripeness judgment of fruits was based on the fruit's coloring rate to determine their proper harvesting timing. The peduncle recognition involves extraction of the display line of peduncle, as well as determination of its cutting position and direction angle. Results confirmed that the harvestable fruits having at least 50 to 60% coloring were able to be determined, while the cutting position and direction angle of the peduncles can be obtained. From the information provided by the image processing method, the picking hand's ability to cut and hold the harvestable fruits through their peduncle was confirmed.

Judging of tomato maturity by utilizing a low-resolution RGB color system

On the image processing of personal computer, the RGB color system has the most closely index color map (16.77 million index, 24bit) compared to the other (L*a*b* or HSV etc.) color system. Therefore RGB index values are used in the other color system formula. This study determines a method for higher accuracy judgment by the RGB color system for the index color of tomato maturity. The correlation coefficient between the relationship of tomato maturity and the histogram in 24bit color index map in RGB color system was 0.6202, when it was showed under the index of R=141, G=60 and B=50. The judgment accuracy for using this linear formula was about 50%. Then, when the percentile of histogram of tomato area was used, the correlation coefficient was increased to 0.6225. This reason was affected by the size of tomato. Moreover, we thought that the RGB 24bit color map was too much, thus a lower bit color map was used this analysis. The highest correlation coefficient was obtained 0.9202 in 64 colors(12bit). This result was clearly showed that the group color is better than mono color. Therefore, other color system which has lower color map, were compared to a 15bit color index map on the RGB color system.

The solution for the problem of exhaust gas from diesel engines has become more important these days, and some improvement is to be needed also on agricultural machineries. Therefore it is important to observe the actual situation of the exhaust gas amount of agricultural tractors on field work. On this report, rotary tillage was considered, which is the most popular work in Japan. To obtain the amount of exhaust gas, PTO Load on rotary tillage was recorded and reproduced with the PTO performance test system in the laboratory. PTO load and PTO speed were correctly reproduced on this system, and the tendency of the results of exhaust gas density by the system was the same as the real ones on the field, which means the reproduction of PTO load by the system is proper from the view of exhaust gas. By the reproduction, the exhaust gas amount of tractors was investigated on rotary tillage, and it supposed that the amount of exhaust gas per kWh varies with various required PTO power.

The exhaust gas amount of tractors on rotary tillage has been estimated by means of the reproduction method of the actual work on the report part 1 to observe the situation of the exhaust gas on actual field work. On this report, the relation between the exhaust gas amount and the condition on field work, such as PTO load and engine speed was investigated. To understand the relation, the amount of exhaust gas from the actual rotary tillage with various traveling speed and engine speed was estimated, and the changes of estimated C1 mode test results (which represents the amount of exhaust gas from general work of non-road engine) by varying PTO load and engine speed was also considered. As a result, it was made clear that every tractor has its own tendency of changing the amount of exhaust gas by varying PTO load and engine speed, and it seemed possible to decrease each exhaust gas component by considering the tendency and selecting the suitable PTO load and engine speed.

第2報では, イチゴの向きと等階級判定機能を備えた選別ソフトウエアの開発と選別システムの構築を行った。開発したソフトウエアは, 第1報の方向決定ソフトウエアで向きを決定した後, イチゴの最大幅と高さによる面積とイチゴの上部形状面積との比から等級を判定し, 画像面積Aから階級を判定するものである。選別システムの構成は, 方向決定ソフトウエアと等階級判定ソフトウエアを備えたソフト部と, ベルトコンベア, ロボット, コンピュータ, CCDカメラのハード部からなる。章姫を用いた選別実験の結果, どの向きの章姫に対しても選別判定性能は等級で98.6%, 階級で100%と高い性能が得られた。判定時間は1.18秒以内であった。以上より, 開発した選別システムの有用性が確認できた。

水田へ敷設する生分解性フィルムヘマルチ穴を切開するために, ナイロンコードを用いたマルチ穴開け機構を開発した。本機構は, 回転式植付け機構を持つ田植機の植付アームに組付けられ, 切削部品として安全性の高いナイロンコードを用いること, 苗植付けの直前にナイロンコードの衝撃力でマルチ穴を切開することを特長としている。最適なマルチ穴長を求めるために, 植付け爪とナイロンコードの運動軌跡を求めた。その結果, 理論値および実験値から, マルチ穴長はナイロンコード長および取付け角度, 植付け深さと植付け間隔に影響されることが判った。植付け間隔120~160mm, 植付け深さ10~50mmの条件で理論値と実験値の差は最大でも5mm程度であり, 苗の植付けに必要かつ十分な長さのマルチ穴を切開することができた。よって, 本機構は水稲マルチ栽培用田植機のマルチ穴切開機構としての有用性を認めた。

本報は, 生分解性フィルムを利用した環境保全型早期水稲マルチ栽培システムを研究するために, 生分解性フィルムの物理的強度, 保温性, 分解性, 水稲生育状況等の特性について検討した。<br>生分解性フィルムは, ポリエチレンフィルムに比べて, 横方向の引張り強度および引裂き強度が弱く, 保温性はポリエチレンフィルムに比べて0.3~0.8℃低く, 光量子のフィルムから反射する量は2~5%程高かった。生分解性フィルムの植物成長に与えるマルチ効果はポリエチレンフィルムとほぼ同じであった。一方, 生分解性フィルムは, マルチ効果が必要な初期生育期間の分解は少なく, 3ヶ月以降から急激に分解することから, 早期水稲のマルチ資材として有効的に利用できることを確認した。

A prototype of rice transplanter for mechanizing the mulching cultivation system was developed to perform mulch laying and transplanting simultaneously. It was then evaluated in the field based on performance accuracy of mulch slit cutting and transplanting. Actual mulch slit lengths were approximately 2cm shorter than the theoretical value as the film was on paddy soil but 1 to 2cm longer than the minimum value required for transplanting. The transplanting positions were 3 to 5cm rearward of the theoretical one. Hence, some slits were shortened and made imperfect, and miss transplanting was observed when film placement was altered. However, 92% of mulch slits had seedlings transplanted normally. Therefore, this transplanter was confirmed workable in the field.

The motion equation of mulch slit cutting mechanism was deduced from combining the knife motion equation and the rotary type transplanting motion equation. The motions of the planting finger and the knife were simulated to determine the theoretical mulch slit length and planting position. Results showed that theoretical slit length is longer when planting depth is deeper, and shorter when hill spacing is wider. The planting position varies from the center of the slit to the front. Tests on the sliding soil bin, laid with film, showed that the tip of knife reached the film earlier than the planting finger, all slits were straight, and the planting position was similar to the theoretical value. Therefore, the possibility of making slits while transplanting was confirmed.

This paper reports the study to speed up the growth of seedlings and to shorten heading and maturity duration of early season culture rice by introducing mulching cultivation using polyethylene film, and the study on the mechanism enabling the rice transplanter to do film laying and transplanting simultaneously for this cultivation. The knife type mulch slit cutting mechanism, linked with the rotary type transplanting mechanism, was developed to make slits on the film. The motion of the reciprocating and oscillating knife was analyzed using video images. The knife cuts a slit on the film just before transplanting the seedlings through the slit. The analysis confirmed that this cutting mechanism, which could be made a part of rice transplanter, can work well with film laying and transplanting.

The possibility of classifying strawberry by shape was confirmed by previous experiments. This particular study tested the automatic sorting system where strawberries were manually placed on a turntable which conveys strawberries towards the distinction unit to classify according to their shapes and sizes. The judging time and distinction accuracy were found to be acceptable and effective. However, the carrying time was longer than by manual sorting, and further study to speed up the carrying time is necessary.

After proposing a geometric features for strawberry shape distinction and their effects verified, four judging methods were tested. As a result, three methods which use the center of gravity of projected area distinguished the shape more accurately, but required longer time for judging. Another method, which is considered useful and acceptable for its short judging time, has a distinction accuracy inferior to the other three and must be improved further.

In strawberry production, sorting spends much time and labor, the development of an automatic system for sorting is envisioned. It is the objective of this study to develop an automatic sorting system for strawberry to optimize output and minimize labor costs. In this system, strawberry shape is distinguished by image processing through a computer. Seven geometric features which can express a strawberry shape were extracted and tried and their effects for effective shape distinction verified. The result showed that strawberry shape distinction was possible.
