© 2020 Int. J. Elec. & Elecn. Eng. & Telcomm. One of the most common questions in the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system is how to transfer much power over coils driven by the AC power source. This paper concerns how to determine the frequency of AC power source optimal to maximum WPT. Although it is theoretically possible to determine the optimal frequency by wide range frequency sweep, it is practically important to spot it in a few trials of frequency. This paper proposes a frequency spotting strategy using a square wave input power signal. The strategy avoids a long time-consuming sweeping process with knowledge of response by square wave input. The Automatic Multiscale-based Peak Detection (AMPD) algorithm is applied to select the initial peak finding on every data sample increment iteration to further analysis to find the set of peak patterns by calculating error parameters.

Boost converter is one of fundamental DC-DC converters and used to deliver electric power with boosted voltage in many electrical systems. Several control strategies have been applied to control a boost converter delivering a constant output voltage. Generally, boost converter works in two modes; one is called a Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM). Many researches use CCM model in the controller design, but they never ensure that the controller always works in CCM. This paper proposes novel nonlinear controller of boost converter designed using the modification of flow in phase plane. The proposed controller guarantees that the boost converter works only in CCM region. The simulation result confirms that our proposed controller brings the state variables from any initial point to a desired operating point successfully. copy; 2018 Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science.

© 2017 IEEE. Efficiency improvement of wireless power transfer system is studied using ferrite bars with keeping distance of electric power transmission. Experiments are performed to decide better installation of ferrite bars for improving efficiency; there are many possibilities how and where to install them. We conducted several experiments and devised a method of installing ferrite bar with high effect on WPT. Each result is compared with the case of no ferrite bar system. The result of experiments shows using ferrite bars is practical and cost effective. Some suggestion is given to drive wireless power transfer system with lower frequency, which is also noteworthy about the limitation of available power source.

Copyright © 2016 Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science. All rights reserved. Behavior of electric circuits can be observed by solving circuit equations symbolically as well as numerically. In general, symbolic computation for circuits with certain number of circuit elements needs much more time than numerical computation. It is reasonable to check the existence and uniqueness of the solution to circuit equations beforehand in order to avoid computation for the case of no solution. Indeed, some circuits have no solution; in that case, one should notice it and avoid to wait meaningless computation. This paper proposes a new theorem to check whether given circuit equations have a solution and their voltages and currents of all circuit elements are uniquely determined or not. The theorem is suitable for developing a computer algorithm and helps quick symbolic computation for electric circuits.

A wireless power transfer (WPT) circuit is composed of a transmitting circuit with an AC power supply and a receiving circuit with a load, and the circuits are wirelessly connected each other. Then a designer chooses the wave form of the AC power supply. Many papers about WPT adopt a sinusoidal wave as the input. The frequency of the sinusoidal wave is generally determined to the resonant frequency of the circuit for high power transfer. Since the number of circuit elements in the power supply to generate a square wave is much less than that of a sinusoidal wave, WPT with a square wave input should be treated. In fact, some papers adopt a square wave as the input, and adjust the frequency of the square wave to the resonant frequency of the circuit. In this paper, we examine how the frequency of a square wave input affects power and efficiency of WPT circuits, and propose a procedure how to determine the frequency of the input to improve power and efficiency. Finally we discuss which wave should be adopted as an input and how the frequency of the input should be determined, regardless of whether resonant phenomena occur or not.

A power source used in wireless power transfer generates an AC wave to transfer electric power to a load which is not connected electrically but connected electromagnetically to the power source. In this paper, the power and efficiency are compared when a sinusoidal and a square waves which are typical AC waves are applied as power source voltage outputs. The condition under which the two waves respectively transfer equivalent power with electric wires is examined to figure out the effect of different waves. Then the power and efficiency are calculated by a mathematical approach with practical values of elements on various situations. Finally, this paper explores how input waves should be chosen for ideal wireless power transfer.

This paper proposes a new and general method to optimize a working frequency and a load resistance in order to realize highly efficient wireless power transfer. It should be noticed that neither resonant frequency nor matched impedance maximizes efficiency of wireless power transfer circuit, in general. This paper establishes a mathematical model of a commonly used wireless power transfer circuit, and derives a mathematical expression of circuit efficiency which involves a working frequency, a load resistance and the other parameters as symbols. This enables us to find the optimal working frequency and load resistance. The result of this paper is compared with results by a method based on resonance and impedance matching, and then clarified by a numerical example.

When users analyze symbolically physical phenomena, software products which partially help them write a symbolic equation to the phenomena are available. In electric engineering, there are a few software products which compute symbolically voltages and currents of electric circuits. They cover the frequency response analysis on behavior of linear time-invariant (LTI) circuits. However, they do not cover symbolic computation on the time response of circuits. This paper introduces a software product which generates a model for computing the time response of LTI circuits.

In this paper, a Kalman canonical decomposition of finite-dimensional linear timevarying continuous-time systems is revisited. Two types of Kalman canonical decompositions are considered; one is collectively dubbed the intervalwise Kalman canonical decomposition and the other is collectively dubbed the global Kalman canonical decomposition. Each type is classified into subtypes resulting from variants of controllabilities (i.e., controllability, reachability, and influenceability) and observabilities (i.e., observability, determinability, and visibility). This paper first investigates the invariance properties of subspaces resulting from variants of controllabilities and observabilities. This paper then gives a self-contained exposition of each Kalman canonical decomposition on an interval. The main result is to prove the existence of intervals on each of which each Kalman canonical decomposition exists. Moreover, the relations among different Kalman canonical decompositions are extensively studied and the inconsistency between the works by Youla and Weiss is resolved. © 2014 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Many papers about wireless power transfer use resonant phenomena. In general if input frequency is adjusted to the resonant frequency, the amplitude of current or voltage will be maximal. Since the power of resistive load is determined by its current or voltage, the power will be maximal at the resonance. As for wireless power transfer, it is one of significant specifications to transfer power as much as possible. Then it is natural to try to maximize transmitted power with resonant phenomena. On the other hand, efficiency is another significant specification on wireless power transfer. However efficiency is defined as a ratio with two different powers, and it cannot be concluded that efficiency is always maximal when either power is maximal. Therefore efficiency has no straightforward relation with resonance in contrast with the relation between resonance and power. In this paper, we show an example which cannot realize the maximal efficiency, although resonant phenomena are caused and discuss why the situation is caused. An analytical method for wireless power transfer is clarified and how to choose an optimal frequency is scrutinized. The power of transmitting and receiving sides and efficiency are calculated by using mathematical models, e.g. a state equation, a transfer function.

Wireless power transmission is based on electromagnetical phenomenon between two separate coils. In order to transfer power from one to the other, we have to cause a time-varying current along one coil. Many of conventional wireless power transmission systems suppose a sinusoidal current of the coil. One reason for it could be the convenience that we have a sinusoidal power source as the industry standard. If we can use a power source which generates many types of wave form, we do not necessarily use the sinusoidal wave. In this study, we propose to add a feedback signal on a sinusoidal signal, that is, we propose to utilize a non-sinusoidal input. We will evaluate the sinusoidal wave and non-sinusoidal wave from the viewpoint of transmission power and efficiency to secondary side.

© IFAC. This note proposes a new approach to computing the Kalman canonical decomposition of finite-dimensional linear periodic continuous-time systems by extending the Floquet theory. Controllable and observable subspaces are characterized by factorizing the monodromy matrix. Then, the conditions for the existence of several periodic Kalman canonical decompositions are extensively studied. The relations to the Floquet factorization, the Floquet-like factorization, and the period-specific realization are also discussed.

Conventional researches onWireless Power Transmission systems use experimental or numerical method to analyze the systems. However, the situation will be better if symbolic method is available. This paper develops a software which generates a state equation directly from schematics. The software helps engineers that design circuits and obtain characteristics of circuits to analyze the behavior of circuits with circuit parameters by symbolic computing. Our software also provides various perspectives of the system with circuit parameters.

In this paper, a Kalman canonical decomposition of finite-dimensional linear periodic continuous-time systems is considered. This paper firstly investigates the invariance properties of the controllable subspace and the observable subspace. This paper then illustrates a counterexample to the existence of the periodic Kalman canonical decomposition in a typical setting, where the coefficients are restricted to be real-valued and the period of the transformed system is restricted to be the same as the given system. Motivated by this counterexample, this paper gives a self-contained exposition of the periodic Kalman canonical decomposition in real-valued coefficients. © 2013 AACC American Automatic Control Council.

It is a well-known fact that a weighting pattern matrix has a periodic realization if and only if the matrix is separable and periodic. This fact, however, does not cope with a reasonable question of period-specific realization problem: for a given weighting pattern matrix and a given positive real number, find a periodic realization corresponding to the given matrix and with a period equal to the given number. This paper answers the question by showing that the period-specific realization problem has a solution if and only if the given weighting pattern matrix is separable and has a period equal to the given positive real number. To this end, two types of period-specific realizations are constructed. One is with a constant A-matrix whose dimension is not necessarily minimal among all possible period-specific realizations. The other is with a non-constant and periodically time-varying A-matrix whose dimension turned out minimal among all possible period-specific realizations. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is commonly applied in photovoltaic system in order to harvest the maximal power. One of the widely used MPPT techniques is socalled Perturb and Observe (P & O). However, P & O MPPT has a shortage on operating point swinging around maximum power point (MPP), where one can never achieve a MPP. In order to reduce the shortage, new nonlinear control is presented. The proposed control is applied for boost converter which is commonly used in photovoltaic system. The controller is designed based on state-space averaging and nonlinear control theory. In the experiment, the proposed controller is implemented in a real circuit that utilizes solar array simulator to displace the photovoltaic module. Experiment result shows that the proposed method can suppress the oscillation of MPPT. © 2012 IEEE.

This note discusses the steady state response of a linear periodic system with a periodic input, especially for linear systems with periodic and piecewise continuous coefficients. The first order approximation of the steady state response with respect to the period of time is obtained for general linear periodic systems. This result is then applied to analyze the buck-boost converter operating in continuous conduction mode. This mathematically clarifies conventional results of switching converters which have been deduced under physical inspections or assumptions. © 2011 IFAC.

In the Floquet representation theorem, a state transition matrix whose second argument is 0 is represented as a product of a real-valued periodic matrix function and a real-valued matrix exponential function. In contrast, we have proposed a novel representation as a product of a real-valued periodic matrix function and two real-valued matrix exponential functions. In this note, the structure of the previously proposed representation is intensively investigated in terms of the maximum parametrization. © 2010 IFAC.

In this note, the novel representation is proposed for a linear periodic continuous-time system with T-periodic real-valued coefficients. We prove that a T-periodic real-valued factor and two real-valued matrix exponential functions can be extracted from a state transition matrix, while, in the wellknown Floquet representation theorem, a 2T-periodic real-valued factor and a real-valued matrix exponential function are extracted from the state transition matrix. Then we also proved that any T-periodic system can be transformed to a system with T-periodic real-valued trigonometric coefficients using a T-periodic real-valued coordinate transformation, while, in the well-known Lyapunov reducibility theorem, a 2T-periodic real-valued coordinate transformation is utilized to transform the given periodic system into a time-invariant system with real coefficients. This new information can be useful for designing a T-periodic control law. ©2009 IEEE.

It is a well-known fact that a weighting pattern matrix is realizable as a linear periodic system if and only if the matrix is separable and periodic. This fact, however, can not cope with a reasonable question when a weighting pattern matrix can be realized as a linear periodic system with a specific period of time. This paper answers the question by constructing two types of period-specific realizations. This paper develops the realization theory for linear periodic continuous-time systems. The substantial difficulty in the period-specific realization problem is that there may be no solution among linear periodic systems whose dimensions are equal to the order of a given weighting pattern matrix, in sharp contrast with realization problems for general linear time-varying systems or linear time-invariant systems. This paper proves the existence of period-specific realizations even when there exists no realization with dimension equal to the order of the weighting pattern matrix. It is finally shown that the realizations obtained in this paper have a <I>minimal</I> dimension among all of possible realizations with a specific period of time.

In this note, structural decomposition of linear periodic continuous-time systems is discussed. A fundamental problem to decompose a state of a periodic system into controllable and uncontrollable parts is conjectured to be achieved by a continuously differentiable and periodic coordinate transformation with the same period of the system, however there is a counterexample to this conjecture. Hence we derive a condition for the existence of such a coordinate transformation. We also prove that, by relaxing a class of coordinate transformation, it is always possible to construct a periodic coordinate transformation with the double period of the periodic system.

This paper proposes an explicit formula for designing a periodic state feedback control law for a class of linear periodic continuous-time systems. The proposed control law sufficiently raises the frequency of a periodic coefficient matrix of a resultant closed-loop system so that the closed-loop system is exponentially stabilized, which is proved by introducing an averaging technique with quantitative evaluation. This enables closed-loop characteristic multipliers to converge to desired place, which are arbitrarily specified by the pole placement design for an averaged linear time-invariant system. The effectiveness of the proposed control law is demonstrated in a numerical example of attitude control of small satellites with magnetic actuator.

This paper presents a geometric interpretation of stabilizability of linear periodic continuous-time systems, which is an extension of the well-known geometric approach for linear time-invariant systems. Although the existence of linear periodic state feedback with the same period of the system has been discussed in the conventional results, we admit a broader class and discuss a periodic state feedback with a twice period of a system (briefly double periodic state feedback) in order to derive a stabilizability condition in the coordinate free setting. For this end, stable, unstable and reachable subspaces in the state space for linear periodic systems are introduced. It will be shown that those subspaces are spanned by a smooth and doubly periodic basis and are invariant with respect to the fundamental solution. With these notions, it will be proven that a linear periodic system is stabilizable by doubly periodic state feedback if and only if the unstable subspace is contained in the reachable subspace, which is a well-known fact for linear time-invariant case.

This paper presents a new insight into controllability for linear periodic continuous-time systems. A number of necessary and sufficient conditions for linear periodic systems to be controllable have been proposed in mutually different forms. However, it is common for these conditions to be described in terms of input coefficients and fundamental solution matrices or transition matrices of the systems. On the other hand, more convenient controllability criterions such as PBH test are available for linear time-invariant systems: the criterions can be described by system matrices in the state-space representations instead of fundamental solution matrices. The purpose of this paper is to derive a controllability criterion in terms of system matrices for linear periodic systems in parallel with the case of linear time-invariant systems. To be precise, this paper proves the existence of <I>particular</I> state-space representations where controllability can be checked directly through system matrices.

This paper proposes a novel approach for designing a periodic state feedback control law for a class of continuous-time linear periodic systems. The control law generates the sufficiently high frequency sinusoidal in the coefficient of the closed loop systems, then the closed loop solution is shown to be exponentially stable based on the averaging method. It is also shown that the closed loop solution is approximated by the solution of the average system. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a control design method to suppress flexible appendage vibration while controlling the attitude motion of space structures simultaneously using two different actuators; one a "slow" actuator, and the other a "fast" actuator. Because the frequency of flexible appendage vibration is much higher than that of attitude motion, this system naturally exhibits a two-time-scale dynamic behavior. After describing this system as a singularly perturbed system, the control laws of each subsystem were determined to have the following properties: the slow actuator only controls the attitude motion of space structures, and the fast actuator only suppresses flexible appendage vibration. A composite state feedback control is obtained by combining the slow subsystem and fast subsystem control laws. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of this control design method.

This paper proposes an algorithm which enables the authors to characterize positive realness and three different classes of strict positive realness in terms of Riccati equations and inherent integrations. It has been an open question whether or not the feedback system consisting of a weakly strict positive realness and a nonlinear passivity is asymptotically stable. This paper also shows that the statement is indeed the case.
