The low-energy electric dipole response in the axially deformed 154Sm nucleus was investigated for the first time using complementary probes. The isoscalar (IS) response was extracted from an ( α, α ′ γ ) coincidence experiment and the isovector (IV) response from polarization observables measured with the (p→,p→′) reaction at 0∘. Both the IS and IV responses exhibit a resonance-like structure at excitation energies 5.5-6 MeV identified as the pygmy dipole resonance. Its evolution with deformation is investigated by comparison to the spherical isotope 144Sm. The low-energy IV strength in 154Sm departs from the K -splitting picture that characterizes the IV giant dipole resonance in this nucleus. This finding is further supported by the absence of significant IS strength above 7 MeV.

Polarized targets evolved into indispensable tools in particle and nuclear physics. However, the polarized solid target is degraded by high-intensity beam irradiation, known as radiation damage due to target heating and radical generation. We demonstrated a radiation-tolerant polarized solid target operating at room temperature. An annealing allows the spontaneous repair of the damage by reducing unwanted radicals. Using a single crystal of p-terphenyl doped with 0.01 mol% pentacene-d<inf>14</inf>, dynamic nuclear polarization using photoexcited triplet electrons was applied to proton spins at room temperature and in 0.39 T. For the proof of concept, a deuteron beam with an energy of 135 MeV/u and intensities of 107–109 counts per second (cps) was irradiated. The proton polarization was determined to be 3.0%±0.2%(stat.)±0.1%(sys.) from a scattering asymmetry. The polarization was almost not attenuated up to 109 cps, but the target crystal was yellowed. The visible-light absorption spectroscopy suggested irreversible radiation damage due to missing protons by the knockout reaction. The room-temperature polarized solid target allows impractical experiments with the conventional target system, leading to a next-generation spin-dependent accelerator science.

Three-neutron emission from He7 has been directly measured for the first time, following neutron knockout from a He8 beam at 156 MeV/nucleon. A resonancelike structure at 2.08(4) MeV above the He4+3n threshold [E<inf>x</inf>=2.68(4) MeV] with a width of 3.9(2) MeV was observed and deduced to arise predominately from the predicted Jπ=3/2<inf>2</inf>− level. The three-neutron invariant-mass spectrum was reconstructed and found to peak at around 1 MeV and could, through complete simulations incorporating neutron-neutron correlations, be very well described by the sequential decay of He*7 via the 2<inf>1</inf>+ excited state of He6. No evidence was found for any significant three-neutron correlations beyond those expected from well-established two-body interactions, including a trineutron resonance.
