Semantics of Noun Phrases and Copular Sentences in Korean: contrastive analysis with Japanese Reviewed

This paper aims to establish the semantic taxonomy of Korean copular sentences. The meaning of the copula and NPs is discussed before the classification of copular sentence types. Following the foundational arguments of Higgins(1979) and Nishiyama(2003), this paper describes how the copular sentences are split into four different types: predicational, specificational, identificational, and identity sentences. A detailed analysis is given for each type of sentences through proper examples. The cleft structure is also examined regarding the specificationals. The contrastive analysis of Korean and Japanese is a significant issue of this paper due to the fact that Korean copular sentences have their own distinct characteristics particularly in the use of particles compared to Japanese ones. Further arguments with many other copular sentence types will be studied in a future paper.
