Naoki Aihara and Yasushi Mitsuda: Automatic forest road extraction using a deep-learning model with a CS topographical map. Jpn. J. For. Plann. Utilizing a CS topographical map derived from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) acquired through airborne laser scanning (ALS), we developed a methodology to automatically extract forest roads using a deep learning model. The deep-learning model, employing a CS topographical map as the input, reproduced 75.1% of the route length for actual forest roads. Of the forest roads extracted by the model, 91.7% were consistent with the existing forest roads. In contrast, the deep-learning model developed using elevation, slope, and plane curvature as inputs could reproduce only 0.1% of the route length for actual forest roads. In forested areas, the automatic extraction of forest roads using conventional photographs is challenging due to vegetation cover. Our forest road detection model can overcome this limitation because it utilizes an ALS-derived DEM as the input. Furthermore, the reproduction rate of forest roads in our model employing the CS topographical map as the input image was significantly higher than that of the model that used elevation, slope, and plane curvature as the input images. This result indicates the efficacy of the CS topographical map for automatic forest road extraction using deep-learning models.

We investigated DBH growth of a 55-year-old hinoki plantation after ordinary thinning and line thinning in order to explore the thinning method to promote individual growth for overcrowding hinoki stands, and to examine the conditions that determine effectiveness of line thinning. The relative growth rate of DBH (RDBH) was compared among three periods; 3 years before thinning, 2 years immediately after thinning (Period I), and the following 5 years (Period II: from 3 to 7 years after thinning). The result confirmed the effectiveness of ordinary thinning for DBH growth even in overcrowded mature stand. On the other hand, RDBH decreased temporarily after line thinning during Period I compared to that before thinning. A Generalized Linear Modeling conducted for DBH as the objective variables, with the initial DBH, canopy length, and thinning method as explanatory variables, also suggested the ineffectiveness of line thinning in the investigated case. Further, multiple comparison of RDBH conducted for four groups of line-thinned residual trees with reference to their tree statuses (superior or inferior) and tree position (center or outer row) suggested that, in Period I, "thinning shock" such as water stress caused by a sudden environmental change might be one of the possible reasons contributing the growth suppression. In Period II, it is also suggested that the influence of thinning shock might disappeared or be weakened, and that the suppressed growth of the center-row, inferior trees were thought to have reduced the stand average of individual growth.
