The purpose of this research was to confirm the deodorizing effect of Deodorant-A on ammonia gas generated from a cow barn and to clarify its deodorizing mechanism. A survey of this research was conducted in Cow barn A. As a deodorizing mechanism of Deodorant-A, physicochemical absorption and decomposition, biological decomposition of ammonia were also examined. In Cow barn A, the concentration of ammonia gas just above the bedding in the deodorant spraying area was higher than that in the unsprayed area. The difference in the ammonia gas concentration could be caused by the difference in bedding temperature due to sunlight conditions of each area. Since no difference in the number of ammonia oxidizing bacteria between both area was observed, the effect of Deodorant-A on deodorization of ammonia gas could not be confirmed in Cow barn A. One of the reason why the deodorizing effect could not be confirmed in Cow barn A might be a survey period in winter when the activity of the microorganisms was low. Deodorant-A would have no effect on absorption and physicochemical decomposition of ammonia gas. The result of biological decomposition experiments showed that no effect of Deodorant-A on increase the number of ammonia oxidizing bacteria was recognized.

Up-flow column percolation tests are used at laboratory scale to assess the leaching behavior of hazardous substance from contaminated soils in a specific condition as a function of time. Monitoring the quality of these test results inter or within laboratory is crucial, especially if used for Environment-related legal policy or for routine testing purposes. We tested three different sandy loam type soils (Soils I, II and III) to determine the reproducibility (variability inter laboratory) of test results and to evaluate the difference in the test results within laboratory. Up-flow column percolation tests were performed following the procedure described in the ISO/TS 21268-3. This procedure consists of percolating solution (calcium chloride 1 mM) from bottom to top at a flow rate of 12 mL/h through softly compacted soil contained in a column of 5 cm diameter and 30 ± 5 cm height. Eluate samples were collected at liquid-to-solid ratio of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5,1, 2, 5 and 10 L/kg and analyzed for quantification of the target elements (Cu, As, Se, Cl, Ca, F, Mg, DOC and B in this research). For Soil I,17 institutions in Japan joined this validation test. The up-flow column experiments were conducted in duplicate, after 48 h of equilibration time and at a flow rate of 12 mL/h. Column percolation test results from Soils II and III were used to evaluate the difference in test results from the experiments conducted in duplicate in a single laboratory, after 16 h of equilibration time and at a flow rate of 36 mL/h. Overall results showed good reproducibility (expressed in terms of the coefficient of variation, CV, calcul ated by dividing the standard deviation by the mean), as the CV was lower than 30% in more than 90% of the test results associated with Soil I. Moreover, low variability (expressed in terms of difference between the two test results divided by the mean) was observed in the test results related to Soils II and III, with a variability lower than 30% in more than 88% of the cases for Soil II and in more than 96% of the cases for Soil III. We also discussed the possible factors that affect the reproducibility and variability in the test results from the up-flow column percolation tests. The low variability inter and within laboratory obtained in this research indicates that the ISO/TS 21268-3 can be successfully upgraded to a fully validated ISO standard.

To recycle silica byproducts and to moderate the heat-island phenomenon, a porous ceramic was made by mixing waste silica powder with clay before firing the resultant mixture. The high water-absorption capacity of the ceramic was used to produce a greening material of moss-covered porous ceramic. To examine the restraining ability of the temperature increase caused by solar-radiant heat on the moss-covered ceramic, the surface-temperature change of a moss-covered sample during solar-radiant-heat reception and the amount of water evaporated from the sample were measured simultaneously, and were compared with those of a mortar sample without moss in the water-absorbing state. To clarify the quantitative influence of the water-evaporation heat on the temperature change of the moss-covered sample, the sample temperature change was simulated by performing a thermal-conductivity analysis and by considering the heat of evaporation using finite-element-methods analysis. The experimental results confirmed that the moss-covered sample that could absorb sufficient water could constrain the temperature increase caused by solar-radiant heat for a long time compared with the mortar sample. The finite-element-simulation results indicate that the restraining effect on the temperature increase by the moss-covered sample resulted from heat of water evaporation. It is expected that the moss-covered ceramic with a high water-absorption capacity and a low conductivity could be used as a greening material on building rooftops.

ダムの貯水機能に深刻な影響を及ぼす堆砂問題の解決には,上流域の土砂発生源を特定することが重要である.しかしながら,地形や地質条件によって崩壊地が多数存在する流域では,発生源の特定が困難である.そこで本研究では,九州南部の宮崎県一ツ瀬ダムを対象とし,ダム上流域に点在する崩壊地から採取した土砂と,建設当初から50年間にわたって貯水池に堆積した土砂の鉱物学の物理・化学的な特徴を解析し,両者の類似性からダム堆砂の発生源を特定した.元素・鉱物組成の類似性から,一ツ瀬ダム上流域における大藪衝上断層の直上・直下の土砂は,ダム堆砂と極めて高い類似性を示し,ダムに流入する土砂の発生源であると推察された.本研究で実施した鉱物学的解析法によって,ダム堆砂の発生源を特定できることが示唆された.

After the accident in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station caused by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, the decontamination of radioactive cesium spread from the Nuclear Power Station to all over the Fukushima prefecture has still been continued constantly. Moreover, the huge amount of radioactive waste typified by removed contaminated soil have been increasing on a daily basis. It is expected that the contaminated soil encumbers the acceptable amount of the interim storage facility. Therefore, various kinds of volume reduction methods are tackled. The classification method is one of feasible prospects, and is required to optimize. This study focused on the distribution of radioactive cesium in the contaminated soil for improving the volume reduction method by the soil classification. Clay minerals are reported to specifically adsorb cesium. The wet classification test proved that the fine particles classified from the actual contaminated soil in Fukushima clearly accumulated radioactive cesium, and contained clay mineral. The amount of radioactive cesium exceeding tolerance level still remained in the large particles over the size of 0.5 mm. As a result of the observation of particles the size of 0.5 mm 4.75 hand-picked by the difference in optical characters such as color and shape, particle groups showed differences of radiation quantity and composition of minerals. Especially, organic matters and soil aggregation showed high radiation quantity. Furthermore, the group of tabular particles including clay minerals, such as mica and vermiculite, showed demonstrably highest radiation quantity among particle groups. For the future, it is suggested that the classification method for the volume reduction should be improved with a focus on the clay minerals mineralogically, not mechanically.
