    近世末期、九州宮崎の高位の山伏野田泉光院が全国を托鉢行脚した実録『日本九峯修行日記』に記録された、農民の言葉を分析したもの。この分析により、近世末期の農民層の言語の実態、異なる階層同士のやりとりの言語という二つの側面のデータを近世語の歴史に付け加えようとするものである。文語文献ではあるが、その記録に、ある程度の使い分けが認められ、一宿の無心に対して、謙譲表現で応答する（「お泊りなさい」ではなく「宿を差し上げましょう」に相当）実態が認められた。また敬語による応答に関して西日本の農民層の方が種類が豊富であることも指摘した。
