<b>Objective: </b>We explored how the effects of obstructive factors changed according to the status of nursing researchers' activities during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). <b>Methods: </b>This study included two online questionnaires in 2020 and 2021 to explore the effect of COVID-19. Participants were 321 nursing researchers from the universities who answered both surveys. The participants were divided into four groups according to the change in research activity status. We compared the results between the four groups in the first survey and the changes between the two surveys in each group. <b>Results: </b>The 321 participants comprised 9.0%, 18.4%, 6.9%, and 65.7% in the "Well-maintained," "Improved," "Worsened," and "Difficulty-remained" groups, respectively. As a comparison of the scores of obstructive factors in the first survey between the four groups, the "Well-maintained" group's scores including "information and communication technology (ICT) proficiency needs and support for others" tended to be lower than that of the other groups. Furthermore, the "Improved" group's scores showed a statistically significant improvement in the second survey, particularly in ICT-related factors (<i>p</i> <.001). Although the scores for "family role burden and conflicts" tended to improve in the "Well-maintained" and "Improved" groups, the scores in the other two groups remained almost unchanged. <b>Conclusions: </b>The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative effect on nursing researchers. The results revealed that ICT proficiency, effective use, and managing to balance family roles and work might be key factors in promoting family activities during difficult periods.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate a team-based systematic prevention and management program for delirium (a multicomponent intervention addressing potentially modifiable risk factors based on the DELirium Team Approach [DELTA]) in older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery within a real-world clinical setting. The DELTA program was initiated at our hospital in January 2019. Methods: A retrospective before–after study was conducted during a preintervention period (January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2018) and a postintervention period (January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021) at orthopedic wards of an advanced acute care hospital in Japan. A total of 787 inpatients were evaluated before the preintervention period, and 833 inpatients were evaluated after the postintervention period. Results: After the DELTA program's implementation, a significant decrease in benzodiazepine receptor agonist prescriptions (odds ratio [OR], 0.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.29–0.53) and an increase in prescriptions of either melatonin receptor agonists or dual orexin receptor antagonists (OR, 3.83; 95% CI, 2.49–5.88) were observed. However, no significant difference was observed in the incidence of falls, self-extubation, or required level of medical and nursing care, including risky behavior and inability to follow medical or care instructions following the intervention, despite a reduction in the length of hospital stay and institutionalization. Conclusion: Implementing the DELTA program for older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery contributed to optimizing the prescription of hypnotics; however, the impact on other patient outcomes, such as falls, self-extubation, and required level of medical and nursing care was limited.

<b>目的：</b>COVID-19拡大によって約2年に亘り看護研究活動が停滞している状況から，看護系大学教員の研究活動上の肯定的変化と関連要因を探索する．<b>方法：</b>日本看護科学学会会員を対象に2022年3月に実施されたWeb質問紙調査に同意した899名のうち，「肯定的な変化」等の自由記載項目に回答した看護系大学教員355名の記述内容について質的内容分析を行った．<b>結果：</b>肯定的変化として，【研究活動上の選択肢の拡大】，【仕事や研究活動に関する価値の捉え直し】等の5カテゴリ，関連要因として，【研究関係者とのつながりの維持】，【COVID-19を契機とする働き方や生活環境の変化】等の7カテゴリが明らかになった．<b>結論：</b>看護系大学教員はCOVID-19に関する経験を通して，オンラインやデジタル技術を活用しながら，研究活動の効率化やコミュニケーションの促進を認識していた．研究関係者とのつながりやテレワーク活用の継続性との関連が，研究活動上の肯定的変化をもたらすことが示唆された．

Introduction: The essential oil of Shikuwasa (Citrus depressa Hayata) primarily contains limonene and γ-terpinene, which have potential applications in stress management and relaxation. However, the psychological or physiological relaxation effects of Shikuwasa essential oil on humans are still unknown. This study aims to investigate the short-term relaxation effects of Shikuwasa essential oil, one of the less-studied varieties, compared to inhaling odour-free air in young female adults. Methods: and analysis: This study is a two-arm, parallel-group, open-label, randomised controlled superiority trial. Forty young female adults will be assigned with a 1:1 allocation ratio to either the Shikuwasa essential oil inhalation group or the odour-free air inhalation group. The primary outcome measure will be subjective tense arousal (subscale of the Japanese version of the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology Mood Adjective Checklist). Secondary outcomes include objective measures: miosis rate and peripheral skin temperature for evaluating autonomic nervous activity, and cerebral blood flow (assessed using near-infrared spectroscopy) for evaluating central nervous activity. Since these objective outcome measures cannot be performed at the same time, we divide our experiment into three phases and participants will inhale sample vials for 2 min in each experiment. We will also evaluate individual preferences/impressions regarding inhaled samples and any adverse events. Ethics and dissemination: The study protocol has been reviewed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki (reference no: I-0074). The findings of this study will be disseminated to academic and professional audiences via publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at academic conferences, and to the broader public via public talks and media/press releases. All study findings, whether negative or positive, will be reported. Trial registration: UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN-CTR), UMIN000053914. Prospectively registered on March 20, 2024.

Mood and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and disabling chronic conditions, and place a substantial economic burden on Japan. Since cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a global-standard evidence-based psychological treatment for mood and anxiety disorders, disseminating CBT in Japan, where pharmacotherapy has historically been more common, is crucial. Especially since the 2000s, the status of CBT in Japan has dramatically changed. This chapter goes on to cover and review the development of academic societies, gives a current picture of high-quality clinical trials, as well as clinical practice under the national insurance system, training systems, and the future of CBT for mood and anxiety disorders in Japan.

Schizophrenia is one of Japan’s most common psychiatric disorders, accounting for more than half of all inpatient psychiatric beds in Japan, and also leads to a significant economic burden. Although medication (especially antipsychotic medication) is the most commonly used treatment for schizophrenia, it is recommended that psychosocial interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) be implemented in parallel with medication. Hence, it is imperative to promote CBT in Japan. Psychosocial interventions for schizophrenia in Japan are diverse, and there are many different places where they are practiced. This chapter reviews the current status of schizophrenia, clinical research on CBT, clinical practice of CBT and related therapies, and the future of CBT for schizophrenia in Japan.
