Obesity stigma remains prevalent leading to damaging effects for those who experience it. This study investigated how information on the cause of obesity affects obesity stigma in a Japanese sample. Seventy-eight participants assessed an individual with obesity in terms of perceived warmth and competence, motivation to lose weight, and the probability of losing weight. Thereafter, they reevaluated the person after reading about one of the three possible causes of obesity: binge-eating (n = 22), behavioral (n = 34), or biomedical (n = 22). The introduction of a biomedical cause for obesity reduced the level of stigma compared to a behavioral cause, but introducing a binge-eating cause elicited the same level of stigma as a behavioral cause. The results emphasize that framing obesity as caused by psychological factors may not have the same impact as obesity caused by genetic factors on the expression of stigma, but it can elicit a more hopeful perception that the target person can lose weight.

Background Shikuwasa ( Citrus depressa Hayata) essential oil, rich in limonene and γ-terpinene, produces calming effects, but its psychological and physiological relaxation effects in humans remain unclear. This study examined the short-term relaxation effects of inhaling Shikuwasa essential oil compared to odor-free air among young adult females. Methods In this two-arm, parallel-group, open-label, randomized controlled superiority trial, healthy females aged 18–39 were randomly assigned to either the Shikuwasa essential oil group (n = 20) or the odor-free air group (n = 20). The primary outcome was subjective tense-arousal, measured using the Japanese version of the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology Mood Adjective Checklist (JUMACL). Secondary outcomes included miosis rate, peripheral skin temperature, and cerebral blood flow. Due to measurement constraints, the experiment was divided into three 2-min inhalation phases. Results No significant between-group differences were observed in tense-arousal, miosis rate, or cerebral blood flow. Additional analyses of covariance, performed for each outcome variable using the Visual Analog Scale score and its interaction with the group as covariates, revealed a trend toward an interaction effect for the JUMACL tense-arousal subscale score, although the overall effects were not statistically significant. Conclusions Short-term inhalation of Shikuwasa essential oil did not significantly reduce tense-arousal or affect physiological indices in healthy, normal-to-low stress young adult females. However, aroma preference may influence psychological and neural responses. Future studies should consider pre-assessed aroma preference, longer inhalation durations, single-phase protocols, extended rest periods, and participants’ baseline mood. Trial registration This study was prospectively registered with the UMIN-CTR, UMIN000053914.

Mood and anxiety disorders are highly prevalent and disabling chronic conditions, and place a substantial economic burden on Japan. Since cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a global-standard evidence-based psychological treatment for mood and anxiety disorders, disseminating CBT in Japan, where pharmacotherapy has historically been more common, is crucial. Especially since the 2000s, the status of CBT in Japan has dramatically changed. This chapter goes on to cover and review the development of academic societies, gives a current picture of high-quality clinical trials, as well as clinical practice under the national insurance system, training systems, and the future of CBT for mood and anxiety disorders in Japan.

Schizophrenia is one of Japan’s most common psychiatric disorders, accounting for more than half of all inpatient psychiatric beds in Japan, and also leads to a significant economic burden. Although medication (especially antipsychotic medication) is the most commonly used treatment for schizophrenia, it is recommended that psychosocial interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) be implemented in parallel with medication. Hence, it is imperative to promote CBT in Japan. Psychosocial interventions for schizophrenia in Japan are diverse, and there are many different places where they are practiced. This chapter reviews the current status of schizophrenia, clinical research on CBT, clinical practice of CBT and related therapies, and the future of CBT for schizophrenia in Japan.
