Background:
Currently, paradoxical findings exist regarding the level of functioning in individuals with Hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal).
Aims:
This systematic review aimed to clarify the functioning, disability, and health of individuals with Hikikomori and their families in comparison to those without Hikikomori.
Method:
Relevant studies were searched from April 22 to 25, 2022, using MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus, and two Japanese databases. Functions were categorized into ‘body functions”; “structure”; and “activity and participation’, which were further classified into subcategories.
Results:
Of the 8,181 studies screened, 24 studies with 1,769 individuals with Hikikomori were included. Twelve, three, and four indicators from six studies on depression and anxiety, three on addiction, and two on thought problem symptoms, respectively, were higher in the Hikikomori group than in the comparison group, with at least moderate effect sizes. Three indicators from three studies on interpersonal relationships were worse in the Hikikomori group, with at least moderate effect sizes. The meta-analyses showed that internalizing symptoms, externalizing symptoms, and thought disorders were significantly higher in the Hikikomori group than those in the comparison group with moderate-to-high effect sizes. Contrastingly, communication/interpersonal interactions were significantly lower in the Hikikomori group than those in the comparison group. No significant differences were observed in daily life/social life and the families’ communication/interpersonal interactions and relationship.
Conclusions:
The study limitations include a high risk of bias and heterogeneity. Overall, individuals with Hikikomori often have impaired mental and interpersonal interaction functions; thus, comorbidities of this condition should be carefully assessed. PROSPERO: CRD42022320592.DOI: 10.1177/00207640241310189

Hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal) has been discussed as a hidden worldwide epidemic and a significant social and healthcare issue. Social anxiety disorder is the most common psychiatric disorder preceding the onset of Hikikomori. Although studies exist suggesting the effectiveness of family-support interventions, little is known about psychotherapeutic approaches for Hikikomori individuals. Here, we present a case of Hikikomori wherein an internet-delivered cognitive therapy for social anxiety disorder (iCT-SAD) worked effectively in improving the client’s social anxiety symptoms and social interaction behaviors. This case study demonstrates the principle that evidence-based psychological interventions focusing on social anxiety can be effective for clients with Hikikomori. Furthermore, the online mode of treatment delivery, along with a variety of relevant modules, may facilitate clients’ engagement with treatment at home. The findings suggest that iCT-SAD might be a promising option for Hikikomori clients who have social anxiety problems, within the recommended stepped-intervention approach.

Identifying the reasons for initiation and maintaining hikikomori—prolonged social withdrawal—and their differences is important for preventive and personalized treatment. Quantitative text analysis and chi-squared tests were conducted using word frequencies to explore the reasons. Multiple regression analysis was used to describe the association between the reasons and psycho-behavioral characteristics, with each coded reason and psycho-behavioral variable as the independent and dependent variables, respectively. Seventy participants currently in hikikomori (48.6% men, mean age 44.8 years) completed four instruments: a free-text description of the reasons, the Adaptive Behaviors Scale for Hikikomori, Japanese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire, and Quality of Life Scale for Hikikomori. Chi-squared tests showed that reasons related to relief and despair/desire were more frequent in maintaining hikikomori compared to initiating. The weighted Kappa statistics was low overall and ranged from −0.08–0.62. Regression analysis revealed that no models for reasons for initiating hikikomori were significant. In contrast, the models for maintaining hikikomori were all significant. Poor health reason was positively associated with depression. Poor health and despair/desire reasons were negatively associated with social interaction and quality of life. These findings indicate that the reasons should be assessed independently. Furthermore, a focus on reasons for maintaining may be useful in mental health treatment.

Backgrounds: Hikikomori, pathological social withdrawal, is becoming a crucial mental health issue in Japan and worldwide. We have developed a 3-day family intervention program for hikikomori sufferers based on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). This study aims to confirm the effectiveness of the 3-day program by a randomized controlled trial. Methods: This study was registered on the UMIN Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000037289). Fifteen parents were assigned to the treat as usual (TAU) group (TAU only; Age Mean, 65.6; SD, 7.8), and 14 to the Program group (program + TAU; Age Mean, 67.9; SD, 8.6). This study was discontinued due to the COVID-19 pandemic; the recruitment rate was 36.3% of our target sample size of 80. Results: Perceived skills improved temporally and stigma temporally worsened in the TAU group. Confidence decreased and attitude showed no change in both groups. Aggressive behaviors of hikikomori sufferers were significantly worsened in the Program group; however, no serious domestic violence was reported. In the TAU group, Avoidance and irregular life patterns were improved. Activity levels were worsened in both groups. Two participants (16.7%) in the Program group and one participant (7.7%) in the TAU group reported actual behavioral changes (e.g., utilizing support). Conclusion: We could not draw general conclusions on the effectiveness of the program due to the study discontinuation. Nevertheless, this study indicates the necessity for revision of the program to improve family members’ confidence in engaging with hikikomori sufferers, with safer approaching by families.

Objective: This review, which was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021237988), aimed to systematically extract common elements in the hikikomori definition or criteria applied by researchers and examine cultural differences and chronological changes in the demographic characteristics of hikikomori individuals such as age, gender and hikikomori duration. Method: For inclusion in the review, the hikikomori criteria, age and gender of the hikikomori individuals had to be specified, and the article had to be peer-reviewed and written in Japanese or English, focusing on hikikomori individuals or their families. Case studies, reviews and qualitative studies were excluded. Results: The total sample size for the 52 studies included in the review was 4744. Over 80% of the studies included the elements ‘not working or attending school’, ‘not socializing outside one’s home’ and ‘duration of hikikomori’ in their hikikomori criteria, and many studies included the element ‘staying at home on most days except solitary outings’. A cross-temporal meta-analysis showed the possibility that the age of hikikomori individuals increased chronologically (β = 0.44, B = 0.50, 95% confidence interval = [0.16, 0.84]). Comparisons weighted by sample size between Japan and other countries showed the possibility that the age of hikikomori individuals was higher (d = 0.32), the percentage of males was lower (d = 0.91) and the hikikomori duration was shorter (d = 2.06) in studies conducted in countries other than Japan. However, many of the included studies had a high risk of selection bias, and this bias may have influenced the results obtained. Thus, the results of this study may represent the researcher’s perception of hikikomori rather than accurately representing the actual condition of hikikomori. Conclusion: Researchers should specifically identify similarities and differences in the clinical picture of hikikomori and compare the studies to organize the findings derived from studies focusing on hikikomori.

Objective This study aimed to develop a quality of life scale for hikikomori (QOL-H), measuring the subjective quality of life (QOL) of individuals with hikikomori, and confirming its reliability and validity. Methods The characteristics of the scale were examined using item response theory. Data were collected from 99 people with hikikomori, 100 people who had experienced hikikomori in the past, and 198 people who had not experienced hikikomori, to develop the scale, examine its reliability, validity, and characteristics. For convergent validity, the correlation coefficients between QOL-H and social interaction behaviors, hikikomori characteristics, depressive symptoms, subjective happiness, and difficulty in social participation were calculated. Results Good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent validity were confirmed for the QOL-H. Furthermore, significant differences in scores among all groups confirmed adequate criterion-related validity. Total information function indicated a high measurement accuracy when QOL was average or slightly high. Conclusion This study suggests that QOL-H can be an appropriate measure of QOL for individuals with hikikomori.

The cognitive behavioral variables of a family that influence the improvement of prolonged social withdrawal (hikikomori) remain unclear. This study prospectively and experimentally examined the effects of family behavioral repertoire and family interaction on hikikomori recovery. The participants were selected from family associations and support centers in the Kanto region of Japan; the study was performed from May 2017 to March 2018. Overall, seven family members (four mothers and three fathers, aged 55–73) of hikikomori individuals (five males and two females, aged 20–47) participated in four 90-min individual sessions targeting cognitive behavioral variables (family behavioral repertoire, cognition of contingency, family interaction, and target behaviors); the intervention sessions were customized according to family characteristics, and participants were followed up at one, three, and six months after the intervention. Of these, three participants demonstrated improvements in up to two cognitive-behavioral variables after the intervention; furthermore, in all three cases, the social interactions of the hikikomori individuals increased later than the changes in their families. The time differences in these alterations suggest a causal relationship between family cognitive behavioral variables and recovery from hikikomori. However, Spearman’s correlation coefficients using the difference values from the pre-assessment were not significant for the hikikomori individuals’ social interactions and the families’ cognitive behavioral variables. These correlation analyses were preliminary because of the small sample size. Further studies with larger sample sizes and robust study designs are needed to confirm these findings.

Background: Although several surveys have suggested that socioeconomic factors function as background variables for the incidence of hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal), no research has directly examined whether socioeconomic indicators increase the incidence of hikikomori. This study aimed to examine the relationship between socioeconomic factors and the incidence of hikikomori using data from eight cross-sectional studies conducted by our group between 2010 and 2019. Methods: We used socio-economic data from national surveys and collected the demographic data of members of a multi-branch Japanese association for family members of hikikomori patients for the period of 2010–2019. Results: The results of the partial correlation analysis showed that the incidence probability of hikikomori increased in tandem with unemployment rates and household income. Further, the associations were positively strong in the 2010–2015 research period; however, they were absent, weak, or medium in the 2016–2019 research period. Conclusions: The findings suggest that socioeconomic factors relate to the increase in hikikomori, and that these factors should be considered when identifying the individual or cultural factors that cause hikikomori.

Objective Cases of prolonged social withdrawal (hikikomori) have recently been reported in several countries. This study examined the impact of cognitive-behavioral and emotional factors on hikikomori behavior to identify intervention targets. Identifying such targets could facilitate the development of techniques to address hikikomori characteristics. Methods Two hundred Japanese individuals (mean age=38.73, SD=6.85) completed the Adaptive Behaviors Scale for Hikikomori and Stress Response Scale-18, along with the Japanese versions of the Self-Compassion Scale (Short Form), Acceptance and Action Ques-tionnaire-II, and Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory. Participants were divided into two groups: individuals with no experience of social withdrawal, and those with experience of social withdrawal. Results Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that the use of instrumental support, behavioral disengagement stress coping skills, self-compassion, and psychological stress were associated with hikikomori behaviors. Furthermore, higher instrumental support levels, associated with a decrease in hikikomori behaviors, were found in the hikikomori group. Conclusion The use of instrumental support, behavioral disengagement stress coping skills, self-compassion, and psychological stress should be targeted in hikikomori prevention interventions. Moreover, encouragement for the use of instrumental support is needed for improving hikikomori.

Hikikomori (a severe form of social withdrawal) is a serious mental health issue. A family approach is the initial step to support hikikomori; thus effective family intervention programs are warranted. We recently developed a 5-day family intervention program (120 min weekly) based on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). In the present study, we modified the 5-day program to a 3-day program (180 min fortnightly), and examined the effectiveness of the 3-day program using a single-arm procedure. Data of 23 parents (four fathers and 19 mothers; age = 62.0 ± 9.1 years) were analyzed. Mental health conditions among participants themselves improved at the 4-month follow-up, but the confidence in hikikomori support declined and stigma toward mental health problems did not change. However, short-term improvements in perceived skills in approaching hikikomori sufferers were detected. Hikikomori sufferers’ actual behavioral changes, such as social participation or utilization of support, were also observed (six out of 20 hikikomori sufferers). Preliminary effectiveness was confirmed for the 3-day program. Further revision of the program and a validation study with controls are required.

This study assessed the social interaction behaviors of individuals with prolonged social withdrawal (HIKIKOMORI), subsequently developing a 26-item self-reported scale called the Adaptive Behaviors Scale for Hikikomori Self Report version (ABS-H-SR). The psychometric properties of the scale were confirmed using the item response theory. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and item response theory (IRT) analysis were conducted using data from participants classified into three groups: the HIKIKOMORI group (n = 72), those who previously experienced it (previous group; n = 175), and the control group (n = 849). The reliability was assessed using the test-retest method and Cronbach’s alpha. The results suggest a reliable scale with acceptable criterion-related, convergent, and discriminant validity. This study suggests that the ABS-H-SR adequately assessed the social interaction behaviors of individuals with prolonged social withdrawal (HIKIKOMORI). Further research may clarify the extent to which the ABS-H-SR is sensitive to changes in the characteristics of prolonged social withdrawal (HIKIKOMORI).

The purpose of this article was to 1) reconsider psychological approaches in the field of welfare, 2) clarify the uniqueness of the professional work in that field, and 3) suggest a new approach of the "behavioral and cognitive"-oriented certified public psychologist in that context. Behavioral Human Serviceology (Mochizuki, 1993) is suggested as a new approach based on an echo-behavioral perspective, which was used in recent research on environmental enrichment/enriched environment (EE), non-contingent reinforcement (NCR), and motivating operations (MO).

© 2020 Japanese Psychological Association. Published by John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd. This study aimed to examine the characteristics of families’ behavioral repertoires in hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal) cases. We asked 243 parents of individuals with hikikomori (hikikomori group) to complete the Family Behavioral Repertoire Scale for Coping With Hikikomori (FBS-H), the Negative Evaluation of Hikikomori Scale, and a self-efficacy measure of coping with problem behaviors of hikikomori in order to develop the FBS-H and to examine its reliability and validity. Additionally, we examined the characteristics of hikikomori cases regarding the families’ behavioral repertoires using data from the hikikomori group and from 458 parents of individuals with no experience of hikikomori (control group). The results of the analysis indicated the acceptable reliability and validity of the FBS-H. The hikikomori group did not have lower FBS-H scores than the control group. This result indicates the possibility that a family's behavioral repertoire does not strongly influence the “expression” of hikikomori. Further research is needed to clarify the influence of families’ behavioral repertoires to refine family support.

© Copyright © 2020 Nonaka, Shimada and Sakai. Background: Family support is key in the initial stages of psychological support for individuals with hikikomori. However, it remains necessary to confirm the relationship between families’ cognitive behavioral factors and the severity of hikikomori to understand ways of improving hikikomori. We examined the influences of family behavioral repertoires for coping with hikikomori and family interaction on the adaptive behaviors of individuals with hikikomori. We employed a control group to examine whether the influence of these adaptive behaviors was unique to families of individuals with hikikomori. Methods: We asked 185 parents of individuals with hikikomori (hikikomori group) and 460 parents of individuals with no experience of hikikomori (control group) to complete the Family Behavioral Repertoire Scale for coping with hikikomori (FBS-H), the Family Interaction Scale for Hikikomori (FIS-H), and the Adaptive Behaviors Scale for Hikikomori (ABS-H). Using the subscales of the ABS-H as the dependent variables, we conducted hierarchical multiple regression analyses wherein family behavioral repertoire was added in Step 1, experience frequency and cognition of contingency were added in Step 2 as control values, family interaction was added in Step 3, and the interaction terms were added in Step 4. Results: The ABS-H total and subscale scores were significantly lower in the hikikomori group than in the control group. The social participation subscale showed the largest difference, while the family subscale showed the smallest. In the hikikomori group, we observed a significant adjusted R2 for the family and value subscales (Step 1). The ΔR2 in Step 3 was significant for the interaction and family subscales of the ABS-H. In the control group, significant adjusted R2 values were found for all ABS-H subscales in Step 1, but the ΔR2 in Step 3 was not significant for any subscales. Conclusion: Family-related cognitive behavioral factors, such as family behavioral repertoire and family interaction, appear to relate to improvement in hikikomori. Of course, these findings warrant further investigation because we did not examine the longitudinal, causal relations between these variables. In the future, we might also test the effect of family support interventions that target families’ behavioral repertoire and family interaction.

© 2018 Japanese Psychological Association. Published by John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd. The cognitive behavioral approach for families of individuals with hikikomori (IWH) places importance on assessing family interaction from a behavior theory. However, there is no gold standard method for the assessment of family interaction of IWH. Additionally, the characteristics of the family interactions of IWH have not been clarified. This study aims to (a) develop the Family Interaction Scale for Hikikomori (FIS-H) using parent-reported data, and (b) clarify the characteristics of hikikomori cases. First, the FIS-H factor structure was examined. Second, to examine the reliability and validity of the FIS-H and the characteristics of hikikomori cases, parents of IWH (hikikomori-group) and unaffected parents (without-group) completed the FIS-H and the Relationship Happiness Scale. Based on data from 146 parents, the FIS-H preliminary version consisted of four factors with a total of 12 items (Study 1). The reliability and validity of the FIS-H were also confirmed to be acceptable using data from 246 hikikomori-group participants. The hikikomori-group had higher FIS-H scores than did the without-group (Study 2). These results show that it is important to appropriately assess family interactions.

© 2017, © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. It is important to appropriately assess the adaptive behaviors of individuals with hikikomori (IWH) using parent reports. However, currently, there is no gold standard in the assessment of adaptive behaviors of IWH. This study aimed to: (1) develop the Adaptive Behaviors Scale for Hikikomori (ABS-H); (2) examine the factor structure of the ABS-H; and (3) examine the reliability and validity of ABS-H. A factor analysis and item response theory (IRT) analysis were conducted using data from 761 parents. Reliability and validity of ABS-H were assessed using measures of severity of hikikomori, difficulty in social participation, extent of places where IWH were active, days on which IWH went out, duration of hikikomori and happiness about relationship with one’s child. A total of 26 items were selected and item-trait was examined from the IRT results. Factor analysis identified four group factors. Cronbach’s alpha was found to be.97. Criterion-referenced, convergent and discriminant validity of the instrument were satisfactory. This study suggests that the ABS-H is a reliable measure with acceptable criterion-referenced, convergent and discriminant validity. Further research is needed to clarify the extent to which the ABS-H is sensitive in capturing the changes in the features of hikikomori.

There are few reports on cognitive behavior therapy for psychological hearing loss. The purpose of this report was to examine how cognitive behavioral intervention contributed to improvement in one such case of psychogenic hearing loss. The patient was a male in his late teens with no history of developmental problems. He first expressed difficulty with hearing in junior high. Entering high school, marked reduction in spontaneous speech was noted both at school and in the home, for which he was diagnosed with psychological hearing loss by an otolaryngologist. His hearing loss involved difficulty understanding what people were saying when he felt tense, such as in meeting new people, or during a conversation. Therefore, intervention was designed to help circumvent avoidance of tense situations, through reinforcement of asking behavior as an alternative to responding with equivocal perplexed expressions when experiencing difficulties hearing. After this cognitive behavioral intervention, his cognition changed from "What should I do if I can't hear?" to "I can ask the person to say it again even if I can't hear", reducing anticipatory anxiety and increasing asking behavior in tense situations. This in turn led to improvement in subjective hearing ability, and subsequent significant increase in social activity level. The outcome of this case was taken to suggest possible efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy in patients with psychogenic hearing loss due to anxiety and tension.

The contribution of habit as a reason for smoking under stressful conditions was investigated. In Study 1, the reasons for smoking including "Reduction of negative affect," "Elevation and stimulation," "Habitual use," "Pleasurable relaxation," and "Sensory motor manipulation" that influenced nicotine dependence were investigated. Results of a multiple regression analysis of data from 117 smokers suggested that the Habitual use factor had a significant influence on nicotine dependence. In Study 2, the influenced of the "Habitual use" factor on the desires to smoke under stressful conditions was investigated. Data of frequent habitual smokers (<i>n</i>=11) and less frequent habitual smokers (<i>n</i>=11) indicated that Habitual use did not influence the desire to smoke, or induce smoking for coping with stress, whereas the desire to smoke increased in stressful compared to neutral conditions regardless of the Habitual use scores. These results suggest that high habitual smokers smoke more in responses to stress and other reason than because of habit.

The purpose of the present study was to examine efficacy of a Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) intervention with concerned significant others (CSOs) of substance-abusing individuals or individuals who were hikikomori, a Japanese term denoting prolonged social withdrawal. The results of a meta-analysis based on 8 studies of effectiveness with concerned significant others of substance-abusing individuals and 2 studies of effectiveness with concerned significant others of individuals who were hikikomori indicated that 64.9% of the substance-abusing individuals and 30.8% of the individuals who were hikikomori engaged in treatment. Including individuals who participated in society, 61.5% of the individuals who were hikikomori engaged in treatment or participated in society. Furthermore, concerned significant others showed marked psychological and family functioning improvements within a 6-month treatment window, whether they were concerned significant others of the substance-abusing individuals or of the individuals who were hikikomori. The discussion deals with effectiveness of CRAFT with concerned significant others of substance-abusing individuals and individuals who are hikikomori.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) for parents of individuals with hikikomori (prolonged social withdrawal). A CRAFT group and a self-help group each consisted of 7 parents. Both groups were requested to complete the following questionnaires: (a) Improvement of the individual with hikikomori or that person's engagement in treatment, (b) the Negative Evaluation for Hikikomori (Negative Evaluation) test, (c) the Self-efficacy of Coping with Problem Behaviors of Individuals with Hikikomori (Self-efficacy) test, (d) the Stress Response Scale-18 (SRS-18), and (e) the Hikikomori Relationship Function Scale (HRFS). These questionnaires were administered before and after the intervention and at a 2-month follow-up, in order to assess effectiveness of the intervention. Of the individuals with hikikomori in the CRAFT group, the parents reported that 42.9% had recovered or were engaged in treatment. The results of the present study indicated that participants in both groups reported enhanced self-efficacy, positive reinforcement on the HRFS, and negative reinforcement on the HRFS. Furthermore, the parents' psychological maladjustment, "depressive-anxious" and "irritable-anger" as reported on the SRS-18, were reduced. Based on the results of the present study, the discussion identified future tasks, including controlling factors that may influence the effectiveness of treatment.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of hikikomori, a Japanese term denoting “prolonged social withdrawal”, on quality of life (QOL). Individuals with hikikomori at present (<i>n</i> = 26) and in the past (<i>n</i> = 31), as well as mildly depressed individuals without hikikomori (<i>n</i> = 114) and highly depressed individuals without hikikomori (<i>n</i> = 27) were requested to complete the WHO Quality of Life 26 (QOL26).The results of MANOVA indicated that the present hikikomori group’s scores on the social relationships domains of the QOL26 were significantly lower than the scores of the highly depressed group. The results of this study suggest that it might be important to intervene to improve QOL in individuals with hikikomori.

Language:Japanese Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:Japanese Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies( JABCT )
The purpose of the present study was to examine effectiveness of behavioral group psychoeducation for parents whose adult children have withdrawn from social life, so-called "hikikomori" . In the present study, 14 parents (average age 59.1 years) were in the group receiving the intervention; 11 parents (average age 61.3 years) were in the control group. The average age of their hikikomori sons and daughters was 27.6 years in the intervention group (12 men, 2 women) , and 29.8 years in the control group (9 men, 2 women). The intervention was behavioral group psychoeducation conducted 3 times every other week; each session lasted 2 hours. Before and after the intervention, all the participants completed questionnaires so that effectiveness of the intervention could be assessed. The following questionnaires were used: (a) Hikikomori Behavior Checklist (HBCL) , (b) Negative Evaluation for Hikikomori, (c) Selfefficacy of Coping with Problem Behaviors of Individuals with Hikikomori, (d) Stress Response Scale-18 (SRS-18) , and (e) General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) . The results suggested that behavioral group psychoeducation enhanced the parents' self-efficacy and reduced their psychological maladjustment, such as "irritable-anger" (SRS-18) and "anxiety-insomnia" (GHQ28) . Based on the results of the present study, the effectiveness of behavioral group psychoeducation for parents of individuals who are social dropouts was discussed.

Home visits are one of the intervention and assistance methods anticipated to be useful in cases of social withdrawal. This study aims at investigating the current status of home visits that are carried out in the regional mental health and child welfare sectors, targeting socially withdrawn adolescents, and at examining the efficacy of this method. We conducted a survey using questionnaires targeting 59 institutions, such as public health centers, health and welfare offices, and child guidance centers, and found that home visits were carried out by public health nurses and child welfare personnel in about 20% of the adolescent social withdrawal cases. Answers to the question sheets were obtained for 54 cases, and investigation revealed that some form of improvement was seen as a result of these visits in 22 cases, or 40.7%. Typical answers included: "the visit encouraged the adolescent to go to a medical institution and/or a consultation agency for examination or consultation," and the "incidence of domestic violence by the adolescent declined." The survey also revealed that 19 of the social withdrawal cases, or 35.2%, inflicted acts of violence on family members; however, 8 cases, or 42.1% showed the improvement of violence through home visits.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors which have influence on field of activity of individuals with serious social withdrawal (Hikikomori). Subjects and method : Four hundreds seventy three families of the individuals with Hikikomori were requested to complete a set of the field of activity of the individuals with Hikikomori and the Hikikomori Behavior Checklist. Results : (1) The field of activity was classified into "personal relationship place" and "free-for-all place", and the going-out frequency per month to "free-for-all place" was higher than the other place. (2) The going-out time per day and "depression" were positively correlated to the going to "personal relationship place". (3)The going- out frequency per month was positively, "avoidance from family members" was negatively correlated to the going to "free-for-all place". (4) "Aggressive behavior" was positively, "unsteady life pattern" was negatively correlated to going-out frequency per month. Conclusion : This study suggested the importance of interventions for the relationship between the individuals with "Hikikomori" and the families, and for "aggressive behavior". The interventions promote the individuals with Hikikomori to go to the "free-for-all place". The interventions may be opportunity to improve the Hikikomori.

The relationship among self-focused attention, depression, and anxiety

Language:Japanese Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:The Japanese Psychological Association
Self-focused attention is considered to be a cognitive characteristic of depression. However, some articles report that self-focused attention is also related to anxiety. This study examines the differential relationships of self-focused attention to depression and anxiety. The Preoccupation Scale, Self-rating Depression Scale, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory T-Form were administered to 454 undergraduate students. The results showed a partial correlation between self-focused attention and anxiety that was significant while controlling for depression, but the partial correlation between self-focused attention and depression was not significant while controlling for anxiety. In addition, the results of an analysis of covariance structure revealed that self-focused attention was related to anxiety, and the relationship between self-focused attention and depression was due to the mediating effect of anxiety. Therefore, it was suggested that self-focused attention appears to be a significant component of cognitive operations for anxiety, but not for depression.

The purposes of the present study were to develop an Aggressive Behavior Scale (ABS) to measure self-reported overt aggressive behavior, and to investigate the reliability and validity of the scale. In Study 1, the Aggressive Behavior Scale was developed with a sample of 372 undergraduate students, and its internal consistency was examined. The results suggested that the Aggressive Behavior Scale, which includes 17 items, consisted of 3 factors: physical aggression, verbal aggression, and indirect aggression. In addition, the internal consistency of the Aggressive Behavior Scale was adequate. In Study 2, 406 undergraduate students took the Aggressive Behavior Scale and an Anger Expression Scale. Using those data, the validity of the Aggressive Behavior Scale was examined. The results indicate that the Aggressive Behavior Scale has good cross-validity and acceptable construct validity. Overall, the results of the present study suggest that the Aggressive Behavior Scale provides a reliable and valid assessment of aggressive behavior.

The purposes of the present study were to develop the Japanese version of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised (SPSI-R) and to investigate its reliability and validity. The Japanese version of the Revised Inventory was administered to a community sample (863 undergraduate students, mean age=20.6±2.8 years; 210 adults, mean age=43.4±14.1 years). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the Japanese version of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised had a 5-factor structure, including "Positive Problem Orientation," "Negative Problem Orientation," "Rational Problem Solving," "Impulsivity/Carelessness Style," and "Avoidance Style." The Japanese version of the Inventory showed adequate internal consist-ency and concurrent validity, and moderate test-retest stability. A clinical sample (46 psychiatric outpatients, mean age=35.1±9.4 years) scored lower on Positive Problem Orientation, higher on Negative Problem Orientation, and lower on general problem-solving skills than did the community sample.
