    Casein hydrolysate (Pep) is a dispersant for poorly water-soluble drugs and nutraceutical ingredients. However, two types of complexes may be between Pep and poorly water-soluble molecules: those that are (1) dispersed as hydrocolloids in aqueous media with a particle size of 100–500 nm; and (2) not hydrocolloids, as indicated by permeability of the complex through an ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and the fact that the particle size is ambiguous by dynamic light scattering. This study was conducted to clarify the factors that determine the dissolution state of the complexes between poorly water-soluble ingredients and casein hydrolysate. We classified the dissolution state of the complexes between poorly water-soluble ingredients and Pep by the permeability using a UF membrane. Complexes containing larger and more-hydrophobic molecules are hydrocolloids and do not permeate the UF membrane, whereas complexes containing comparatively smaller and less-hydrophobic molecules do permeate the UF membrane. A complex containing indomethacin, which has borderline solubility properties, does not permeate the UF membrane at pH values in which the indomethacin carboxylic acid group is protonated, but it is permeable at pH values in which its carboxylic acid group is deprotonated. Furthermore, we determined the stoichiometry and association constant for the complex between a major peptide in Pep and poorly water-soluble resveratrol (Res) based on fluorescence quenching. We calculated the stoichiometry of Res and PepY to be 2:3 and the association constant to be 2.4 × 107 M−1.

    β-Cryptoxanthin (BCX) possesses potential therapeutic and health benefits. However, BCX absorption is low because of its poor aqueous solubility. In this study, a complex between BCX and casein (Cas) was prepared to improve the water dispersibility and bioavailability of BCX. BCX was recovered quantitatively from freeze-dried kumquat powder through solid–liquid extraction and saponification. The complexation significantly improved the apparent solubility of BCX under acidic and neutral conditions. A cell membrane permeation test using a Caco-2 cell monolayer was performed to evaluate the bioavailability of the BCX–Cas complex. This complex and a blank sample were digested in vitro and added to the apical side of the Caco-2 cell membrane. The quantity of BCX that permeated using the BCX–Cas complex after 24 h was 22.7 times greater than that of the blank. Thus, complexation of BCX with Cas improved dramatically the bioavailability of BCX from a kumquat extract.

    © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Ethereal compounds, such as the commercially available extractant dibutyl carbitol (DBC), can extract Au(III) from acidic chloride media by ion solvation. Herein, various aromatic ether compounds comprising an aromatic ring and aliphatic chains were prepared to compare the extraction affinity toward Au(III) without dilution. Aromatic monoethers are not useful for the extraction of Au(III). Conversely, the extraction of Au(III) using aromatic 1,2-diethers increases as a function of hydrochloric acid concentration. For aromatic 1,2-diethers, the shorter the aliphatic chain, the higher the extraction affinity toward Au(III). 1,2-Dimethoxybenzene (o-DMB), which has the shortest side chains, exhibits the highest extraction affinity. 1,3-Dimethoxybenzene (m-DMB), which is a regioisomer for o-DMB, was not suitable for the extraction of Au(III). The extraction selectivity toward Au(III) over that of Fe(III) and Ga(III) using o-DMB, under high concentrations of hydrochloric acid, is higher than that using DBC. Selected aromatic 1,2-diethers, including o-DMB, show a significantly higher extraction capacity toward Au(III) than the industrial requirement of 30 g/dm3. Au(III) extracted using o-DMB was quantitatively recovered by reduction with oxalic acid. In a separation test from a mixed system comprising seven metals, Au(III) was selectively extracted and with a recovery percentage, after reduction, reaching 95.7%.

A series of three types of oligomers—oligo(butylene oxide)n-block-oligo(ethylene oxide)m-block-oligo(butylene oxide)n oligomers (EBs), glycerol-oligo(ethylene oxide)m-block-(butylene oxide)n oligomers (GEBs), and pentaerythritol-oligo(ethylene oxide)m-block-(butylene oxide)n oligomers (PEBs)—having different branch structures were synthesized. EBs, GEBs, and PEBs had linear, three-branch, and four-branch structures, respectively. These oligomers were tested as draw solutes (DSs) for the forward osmosis (FO) process in order to reveal the effect of their branch structures on the FO performance and DS leakage from the FO membrane. The aqueous solutions of EBs, GEBs, and PEBs exhibited a typical lower critical solution temperature-type phase separation. The FO water fluxes in the case of EB, GEB, and PEB were 4.1–4.8 L m−2 h−1 (LMH) at an osmotic pressure of 28 bar, while the reverse solute fluxes (Js) were 0.79–1.83 gMH at DS concentrations corresponding to an osmotic pressure of 28 bar. Js decreased with an increase in the number of branches in the DS molecule, which improved the FO performance index. The results indicate the importance of introducing a branch structure into DS molecules to design useful DSs.

    © 2020 Elsevier B.V. In recent years, the forward osmosis (FO) process has been used as an alternative water purification technique. To achieve the FO process, one of the most important factors is the development of a draw solution (DS) that exhibits a high osmotic pressure and low solute leakage. In this study, poly(propylene glycol-ran-ethylene glycol) monobutyl ethers (PAGBs) with Mw = 278–3911 g/mol were studied and compared as thermoresponsive draw solutes for FO. All PAGBs exhibited phase separations with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 42 and 53 °C. The osmotic pressure curve profiles differed among the tested PAGBs. Both the FO water flux Jw and reverse DS flux Js decreased with increasing molecular weights of PAGBs. The FO performance was measured by calculating Js/Jw. The value of Js decreased more drastically with increasing molecular weights of PAGBs than Jw. PAGBs with Mw range of 1810–3911 g/mol had the lowest Js/Jw ratio and were suitable as draw solutes for FO. These experimental results were confirmed by numerical calculations. Thermoresponsive DSs such as PAGBs may simplify the regeneration of DSs in FO systems.
