Swelling and neuropathy of the affected upper limb due to irrigation fluid induce many problems on activities of daily living for patients after shoulder arthroscopic surgery. In order to practice appropriate nursing for patients who have received shoulder arthroscopic surgery,we investigated the effect of irrigation fluid by examining postoperative swelling of the affected limb in these patients.
Twenty patients were eligible for this study. We examined the circumference of the shoulder, upper arm and wrist joint, before and up to 96 hours after surgery.
The swelling moved from the front to back, proximal to distal in a time dependent manner after shoulder arthroscopic surgery. These findings suggest that gravity may be responsible for the shift in the location of swelling due to fluid extravasation.
The swelling of the distal part of the affected limb appeared after the swelling of the surgical area subsided. The swelling may cause hand stiffness and neuropathy in the distal part of the affected limb. It is suggested that continuous observation of the posterior and peripheral areas of the surgical site, postoperative positioning, and explanation to the patient are necessary in postoperative nursing.
