Uniform nanolayer coatings on photoelectrodes for water splitting are effective in improving their durability by isolating the semiconductor from direct contact with liquid electrolytes. Achieving a thin and uniform coating across the entire surface of nanostructured uneven photoelectrodes using wet processes remains a challenge. This study provides a strategy for the spontaneous formation of a uniform nanolayer of NiFeOx electrocatalyst on Ta3N5 nanorods (NRs) photoelectrodes mediated by acetonitrile (CH3CN) solvent and bulky metal ethylhexanoate complexes. Following the NiFeOx deposition through a spin-coating method on Ta3N5 NRs, the sample is immersed in CH3CN solvent for 12 h. This treatment effectively results in complete coverage of the complex structured surface of Ta3N5 NRs by the NiFeOx nanolayer. The nanocoating ensures the protection of Ta3N5 NRs and contributes to enhanced durability. This distinctive surface modification is applied to semitransparent Ta3N5 NRs photoanodes which is applicable to photovoltaic-photoelectrochemical tandem cells. This simple immersion method of bulky metal complexes into a thin and uniform layer on rough surfaces would have potential for various applications including (photo)electrochemical reactions and corrosion inhibitions.

<jats:p>CuBi<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> photoelectrodes were fabricated by a spray pyrolysis method using a carbon-free precursor solution. The optimized CuBi<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> generated a photocurrent of −0.94 mA cm<jats:sup>−2</jats:sup><jats:italic>via</jats:italic> H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> reduction at 0.6 V<jats:sub>RHE</jats:sub> under simulated sunlight illumination.</jats:p>

The lack of attractive n-type thermoelectric materials greatly restricts their applications because most high-performance materials are p-type conductors, such as the kesterite compound Cu2ZnSnS4. This study reports high-quality n-type kesterite (Cu1−xAgx)2ZnSnS4 (CAZTS) single crystals that exhibit a record high dimensionless figure of merit value of 1.1 at approximately 800 K, primarily owing to Ag alloying, cation compositional optimization, and intrinsic low thermal conductivity. An n-type CAZTS-based single-leg device was fabricated using a Mo-barrier layer. The device exhibited a thermoelectric conversion efficiency of 3.4% at a temperature gradient of 473 K. This study provides insights into developing thermoelectric modules using environmentally friendly kesterite materials.
