This study evaluated the energy efficiency of microwave dyeing compared to conventional external heating using an electric heater (resistance heating) in the dyeing of silk fabrics. Both methods were assessed under standardized energy consumption conditions. The process involved sequential steps from natural dye extraction to silk fabric dyeing, using dyes such as Indian madder, safflower, turmeric, wild indigo, and gromwell. Microwave-assisted extraction yielded dye solutions that were 2–6 times more concentrated than those obtained using the resistance heating method. Fabrics dyed using these extracts showed deeper and more distinct colors. The study confirmed that microwave-based extraction and dyeing were energy-efficient and effective across all dyes, exhibiting negligible evidence of selective extraction or thermal decomposition. Additionally, microwave pretreatment of the dye solutions and silk fabrics, with a 30- second exposure time, had minimal effect.
