After an Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) in a zoo became emaciated and died, a necropsy revealed multiple nodules on the liver and lung surfaces. Microscopy revealed that the liver nodules consisted of neoplastic hepatocytes and showed metastasis in the lung lobes. Most of the neoplastic cells in the liver and lung showed positive labeling for HepPar-1, cytokeratin 19, glypican-3, and Ki-67. Hepatocellular degeneration and necrosis were diffuse in the liver parenchyma. Berlin blue staining revealed large amounts of iron in normal and neoplastic cells. Based on these pieces of evidence, this case was diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma with hemochromatosis. This is believed to be the first report of hepatocellular carcinoma in an Egyptian fruit bat that has been immunophenotypically examined in detail by pathological examination.

Bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a multi-etiologic disease that significantly impacts the cattle industry. Nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) is the nasal mucosal immune system that protects against various pathogens; however, reports on its pathology are limited. We compared the pathologic impact of BRDC-related viruses on the NALT and lungs of 10 pneumonic and 3 negative control Japanese black (JB) calves. Three bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) persistently infected Holstein calves were examined as positive control; all 3 calves had BVDV in situ hybridization (ISH)-positive signals in NALT follicular macrophages and lymphocytes, suggesting viral replication in these cells. NALT and lungs of pneumonic JB calves had weak-positive BVDV results in PCR and negative results in ISH, indicating late-stage transient BVDV infection. The finding of BVDV in unvaccinated pneumonic JB calves confirmed the involvement of a BVDV field strain. PCR detection of bovine coronavirus (BCoV) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) in NALT along with ISH BCoV-positive signals in NALT epithelial cells confirms infection by those viruses. Pneumonic JB calves had nasopharyngitis and pneumonia, with the same bacteria present in nasopharyngeal swabs and lungs, indicating that, in these animals, the bacteria proliferating in the nasopharynx probably migrated to the lungs via inhalation. BVDV transient infection in the NALT may induce local immunosuppression; BCoV and BRSV infections are thought to damage epithelial cells, facilitating bacterial infection of the NALT and lungs. Our results confirm that bovine NALT is a location for viral replication and may be associated with BRDC development in cattle.

Spotty liver disease (SLD) affects free-range laying hens, leading to mortality and reduced egg production. Campylobacter species, including Campylobacter hepaticus, have been associated with SLD cases worldwide. However, the cause of SLD-like lesions found in broilers in Japan still remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the involvement of Campylobacter spp. in broiler SLD by conducting microbiological, molecular biological, serological, histopathological, and immunohistopathological examinations using specimens of liver, bile, cecum, and serum from SLD-like and non-SLD chickens. C. jejuni was predominantly isolated and detected in approximately 40% of both non-SLD livers and SLD-like livers, with no significant difference between them. However, C. hepaticus was neither isolated nor detected in this study. Gross and histopathology revealed multifocal necrotizing hepatitis, suppurative granulomatous hepatitis, and cholangiohepatitis. Hepatitis stages are classified as no hepatitis, subclinical, acute, and chronic hepatitis. C. jejuni was more frequently present in acute-stage SLD-like livers, and high IgG antibody levels were noted in both subclinical and SLD-like-affected chickens, indicating C. jejuni infection. Immunohistochemical examination also supported these findings. The findings suggest that C. hepaticus was not involved in SLD-like in broilers in Japan, but C. jejuni translocation from the intestines to the liver may be a contributing factor.

This study investigated the diagnostic and surgical management of urachal abscessation involving the urinary bladder in three cattle aged >18 months. While the abdominal floor or paralumbar fossa are typically considered for accessing the urachus and bladder in calves and heifers, the distance is too great to perform the procedure under direct vision in adult cows. Therefore, a novel preinguinal approach was used for access in cows with urachal abscesses after 18 months. Access was successfully achieved in all the three cows through a preinguinal incision to the urachal abscess at the apex of the bladder. However, in cases wherein the abscess and adhesions are severe, removal may be challenging or may necessitate a combined median or paramedian approach.

This study describes a novel surgical method to remove urinary bladder-related urachal abscesses in a cow. Traditional methods, such as the midline or paramedian approach in calves and the preinguinal approach, can be challenging in adult cattle, especially for lesions situated near the pelvic cavity. In this case, a 4-year-old cow had a urachal abscess attached to the bladder apex, making it difficult to approach via abdominal wall incision. Colpotomy and pulling the abscess through a vaginal wall incision allowed for complete exteriorization of the lesion and comfortable accessibility of the abscess and the resection site. This report suggests that colpotomy is an effective new route in adult cattle for accessing urachal abscesses not accessible via traditional surgical approaches.
