This study aimed to determine whether crimson clover silage (CSS) can serve as an effective and beneficial substitute for conventional sow diets, to enhance satiety and normal behavior, while reducing production costs. Six sows with an average initial body weight (BW) of 246.0 ± 16.0 kg and an initial backfat thickness of 23.8 ± 1.10 mm were assigned to a 6 × 2 crossover design. Each feeding period included a 10-day acclimation period and a 10-day data collection period for each treatment. In the test treatment, a commercial diet was replaced by CCS on a dry matter (DM) basis at 20%, while the control treatment had no CCS inclusion. Data on daily feed intake, BW, and backfat thickness were recorded, and urine samples for cortisol analysis and video footage for behavior analysis were collected on the last day of each treatment. There were no leftovers with either diet, and nutrient uptake, BW, and backfat thickness were unaffected (p > 0.05). However, stereotypic behaviors and urinary cortisol concentrations were significantly reduced (p < 0.05) with CCS inclusion. Replacing 20% DM of the commercial diet with crimson clover silage presents an effective strategy for lowering feeding costs while also enhancing animal behavior and well-being.

The objective of this study was to investigate the improvement of production efficiency in Japanese Black cattle by determining its metabolic profiles during a shortened fattening period and by revealing the correlations among the profiles and carcass traits. Data were collected from 172 Japanese Black steers that were part of the progeny testing scheme at the Livestock Improvement Association of Miyazaki. A significant increase was observed in the α-tocopherol, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, total cholesterol and blood urea nitrogen levels, from 8 to 18 months of age, the finishing period. On the other hand, at 18 months of age, creatine phosphokinase showed a significant negative correlation with rib thickness and negative correlations with other carcass traits except for beef marbling score, although not significant. The least square mean of the sire candidates for creatinine activity at 11 months of age had a positive correlation with longissimus muscle area and carcass yield estimate. In our study, metabolic profiles of the Japanese Black steers during the short fattening period, which has not been reported so far, have been determined. Our results suggest that there is a genetic association between plasma α-tocopherol or creatinine levels and the increase in muscle or meat.

The volatile components are produced by fermentation when preparing fermented TMR. In the digestion experiment using fermented TMR, when the samples are dried by heat for the analysis of each chemical component, volatile components disappear. Consequently, they are not reflected in the nutrient value of fermented TMR. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accurate nutritive value of fermented TMR by considering volatile components. We conducted two digestion experiments. For the first one, we used fermented TMR with or without about 5% brewers grains (5%BTMR, CTMR1) and for the second one, we used fermented TMR with or without about 8% brewers grains (8%BTMR, CTMR2). The volatilization rates of ethanol, lactic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid and VBN in this study were 99.4±0.6%, 12.4±6.7%, 74.4±8.8%, 83.5±11.4%, 78.4±22.5, respectively. The dry matter digestibility when considering the volatile components was 1.5 point higher than when not considering it.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding Bacillus subtilis on rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, nutrient digestibility, and energy and nitrogen balances in non-lactating crossbred (Holstein-Friesian × Bos indicus) cows. Four cows were assigned to the control and B. subtilis diets in a crossover design, and respiratory and metabolic experiments were conducted. For the B. subtilis diet, B. subtilis DSM15544 spores were added at the rate of 1.0 × 1010 CFU/head/day to the control diet. At 4 hr after feeding, cows fed the B. subtilis diet had increased levels of i-butyric acid in the rumen fluid and tended to have lower concentrations of plasma non-esterified fatty acids when compared with cows fed the control diet. This suggests that feeding B. subtilis could improve energy efficiency. However, there was no effect on energy retention in this study. Although there were no effects on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance, or methane production, heat production was significantly higher in cows fed the B. subtilis diet than in those fed the control diet.

焼酎の蒸留副産物である生焼酎粕は揮発性のアルコールや有機酸を含むが,熱乾燥法により求めた成分値にはこれらが反映されていない.生焼酎粕を飼料原料として有効活用するため,生焼酎粕を含む飼料を肥育豚に給与し,飼養成績と肉質に及ぼす影響を調べた.LWD去勢雄8頭(体重69kg)を,4頭ずつ生焼酎粕区と乾燥焼酎粕区に割り当てた.両区ともに乾物あたり焼酎粕17%,配合飼料73%,トウモロコシ10%の割合で配合した飼料を給与し体重約115kgまで肥育した.行動解析により生焼酎粕を給与した肥育豚は活動性が低く,より多く休息していることが分かった.増体日量に差はなく,生焼酎粕供与による飼育成績は良好だった.乾燥焼酎粕区と比較し生焼酎粕区の胸最長筋のL*値が低い傾向にあった.また,胸最長筋の剪断力価は低い傾向にあり,消費者型官能評価によっても生焼酎粕給与により肥育された豚肉は柔らかいという結果となった.

Grazing behaviour, diet selection and feed intake of cattle grazing a young Chamaecyparis obtusa (an evergreen conifer) plantation in south-western Japan were monitored for 4 years to develop an understanding of animal-vegetation relationships in forest grazing. Animals spent 439-647 min per day grazing, with the activity being high during 06:00-10:00 h (after dawn), 10:00-14:00 h (around midday) and 14:00-18:00 h (before dusk) and low during 22:00-02:00 h (around midnight) and 02:00-06:00 h (before dawn). Although animals were observed to eat 118 species or species groups ( 11 herbaceous species or groups, 33 lianas, 73 shrubs and trees, 1 fern group), most of the bites (71-97%) were taken from 10 species or species groups, showing grasses (mainly Miscanthus sinensis; 27-74%) as the most selected plants. Despite the high selectivity, grasses showed relatively low dry matter digestibility (453-485 g/kg DM) and crude protein (CP) concentration (96-120 g/kg DM) among the major species or species groups. Dry matter digestibility and CP concentration of the diet were estimated at 427-587 and 70-150 g/kg DM, respectively. Feed intake by animals ranged from 1.42-2.12, 0.64-1.21 and 0.11-0.29 kg/100 kg LW/d for DM, digestible DM and CP, respectively. Selection by animals of a wide range of browse species (trees + shrubs, lianas) was interpreted as a behaviour to complement the low quality of the grasses, which represented the majority of the diet.
