Blueberry stem extract (BSE), which contains phenolic compounds like proanthocyanidins, reduces liver lipid synthesis, boosts anti-adult T-cell leukemia action, protects retinal cells from blue light damage, and prevents lacrimal hyposecretion. However, the anticancer functions and immunomodulatory effects of BSE are not well understood. To assess the anticancer properties of BSE, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer (BC) cells were treated with various concentrations of BSE. BSE suppressed the growth of BC cells in a manner dependent on both dose and exposure times. Furthermore, it triggered apoptosis by disrupting mitochondrial membrane potential. BSE also inhibited cell motility in BC cells. Notably, it reduced the expression of PD-1, TIGIT, and LAG-3 immune checkpoint proteins in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, which are critical for antitumor immune response. These findings suggest that BSE has promising anticancer and immunomodulatory properties that warrant further investigation in preclinical models.

The term “<i>koku</i>” is often used by consumers as a sensory descriptor for yogurt-related products. The objective of this study was to understand the sensation of “<i>koku</i>” by exploring the sensory attributes of yogurt drinks consumers recognize as forming “<i>koku</i>”. Initially, a QDA test was conducted on eight commercial samples to identify and measure sensory attributes using the vocabulary derived from consumers. Seven samples selected from the QDA results were then used to evaluate the intensity of “<i>koku</i>” using an untrained panel (n=38). Based on the results of “<i>koku</i>” intensity, a cluster analysis of the 38 panelists was conducted, which resulted in three clusters of 28 (72%), 7 (18%) and 3 (8%) panelists. By performing PLS regression analysis on the “<i>koku</i>” intensity of each cluster and the QDA results, we were able to estimate the sensory attributes associated with the perception of “<i>koku</i>” in each cluster. Based on the findings of this study, further refinement of the sensory attributes may serve as an indicator in determining the sensory attributes that should be emphasized in the development of “<i>koku</i>” yogurt drink products.

The anti-cancer effects of various fatty acids are drawing a lot of attention. To determine whether different fatty acids affect the hypoxic response of liver cancer cells, we examined the effects of various fatty acids on the stabilization of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α protein in the HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell line under condition containing 1% O 2 . Of the fatty acids examined, only 9cis, 11trans (c9, t11)-conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and 10trans, 12cis (t10, c12)-CLA inhibited hypoxia-induced HIF-1α stabilization. In addition, HIF-1α prolyl hydroxylase or proteasome inhibition abrogated the effects of c9, t11- and t10, c12-CLA. Moreover, c9, t11- and t10, c12-CLA significantly inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptotic cell death under hypoxia. This is the first study showing that c9, t11- and t10, c12-CLA inhibit the hypoxic response in HCC cells. ©2012 by Japan Oil Chemists' Society.
