This chapter shows the benefits of singing in choruses for older adults in Miyazaki, Japan. Seven groups: six choirs and a “toy hospital” (consisting of volun- teers who fix toys) were investigated to see if there were differences in quality of life between those who participate in musical activities and those who don’t. Surveys and interviews with participants revealed that most participants, regardless of musi- cal group, reported a moderately high quality of life. There wasn’t a significant difference between the music and non-music groups, possibly due to the small sam- ple size of the toy-hospital group. Common reasons people gave for starting music later in life included having a love of music in their family or previous musical experience in school. A significant barrier to entry was the feeling of being tone- deaf or untalented musically. Those who participated in music groups mentioned many benefits, including a sense of belonging, improved mental and physical health, and a feeling of accomplishment. Camaraderie and social interaction were also important factors in enjoyment and continued participation. A follow-up study con- ducted during the pandemic showed that the music groups continued meeting, albeit with adaptations due to restrictions. The social connection and routine these groups provided were even more valuable to participants during this isolation time. The authors conclude that participation in musical activities brings joy and fulfillment to older adults. Overcoming the initial barrier of self-doubt can lead to numerous ben- efits, making music a unique and valuable way for older adults to contribute to their well-being and find meaning in life.
