Facilitating Musical Expression As An Emergent Interaction Amongst A Teacher And Players Reviewed

The purpose of this study is to get a model of the thinking process of expert music teachers to acilitate students’ musical expression from a viewpoint of teaching as improvisation. I videotaped rehearsals of three electric keyboards ensembles instructed by three expert teachers. I interviewed the teachers about their thinking about instruction, their impacts to the
performance and assessment for the players whilst reproducing VTRs of their rehearsals. I also interviewed the keyboard players about their impression of teachers’ teaching style and their thinking in the rehearsals. I segmented all
of the text data scripted from the VTRs and the recordings of the interviews
by their contents and categorized them from bottom up by using procedure of the grounded theory approach. None of the three teachers brought definitely predetermined plans of musical expression as their goal. They mainly facilitated the players to generate their own ideas of musical expression by inspiring their imagination with intentionally ambiguous words. They gave scaffolding support for the players. From these results, I made a model of the teaching process by an expert teacher for improving musical expression as a group creation characterized by emergent interaction between a teacher and players. -

I videotaped music classes taught by seven preservice teachers at Miyazaki University Junior High School for three weeks. The videos were evaluated according to 17 criteria, such as "Did he/she manage somehow to raise students' motivation and interest?", by two teachers from a university Elementary School, one from a Junior High School, and two from a university. Factor analysis was carried on the scores for 16 criteria given by the five evaluators. The 17th factor, "General evaluation" was not included here. The result indicated clearly that two major factors namely "Management" and "Fellowship" could be considered to explain variance in the scores for those 16 criteris. The seven preservice teachers were classified in three groups of "Management-Fellowship", "Fellowship" and "Low Growth" according to the differences of the factor score. I classified information on Class Observation Sheet given by the preservice teachers of each group and their instructor in the following five categories: "Fact or Impression", "Evaluation", "Suggestion", "Alternative Proposal" and "Explanation". Results from a chi-square test showed that the preservice teachers in the "Fellowship" and "Low Growth" groups wrote significantly more about Evaluation. Whereas preservice teachers in the "Management-Fellowship" group wrote significantly more about Explanation.

The purpose of this study is to examine the beliefs of a music teacher by making a phenomenological investigation into the structure of his beliefs, and the effects that they have on students and the flow of classes. In this study, the music class conducted by Hiroshi Yamamoto at Fukushima University Affiliated Elementary School was analyzed based on participant observation and a postclass interview with him as a teacher. This analysis made clear that the structure of his beliefs was as follows: 1) he attempts to broaden the children's musical values by letting them experience music as a network of expression, 2) he consistently takes the position of being a kind of impromtu supporter, and 3) he emphasizes making a place of musical communication of the music class. The structure of this belief system is consistent as a whole, and as a result of the stable management noted in these beliefs, the children developed to the point that they were able to organize ensemble activity by themselves, and to positively express themselves through an informal concert during the noon recess at school. At the same time, it became clear that the respondent has struggled with internal conflict between his role as a supervisor and his role as a music teacher. The future task is to clarify the improvement process by which a music teacher can overcome such conflicts in forming a strong belief system.
