An traditional pipeline system for water pumping and conveyance has designed to include a flywheel and other facilities for suppressing negative pressure to a depth of 7 m or below in order to prevent water column separation. If the occurrence point of water column separation and the influence of the separation on the pipeline can be accurately identified, an optimal design can be adopted for each pipeline, which permits water column separation to occur without inflicting damage. Field experiments were conducted for evaluating water column separation during a pump power failure and the resulting water hammer pressure caused by recombination of the columns. The effect of implementing a general-purpose check valve or the non-water hammer pressure check valve was investigated. When restarting a pump after a sudden stop, it was found that a pressure rise can be suppressed by opening the bypass valve of the non-water hammer check valve. In addition, it was found that using an independent air choke valve to draw in air during times of negative pressure prevented the spread of the negative-pressure region and thus suppressed water column separation. The field experiments revealed that safety of pipeline is ensured by preventing recombination of the separated water columns, at the regions where water column separation is generated by the negative pressure.

As a recycling technique for the waste GFRP, authors have proposed the manufacturing process of the porous glass fiber reinforced tile by mixing the clay and the crushed waste GFRP and by firing the mixture. In this paper, the influence of the particle size of GFRP on properties of tiles produced by the proposed process was investigated. First, several types of tiles were produced by changing the particle size of the crushed GFRP, the mixing ratio of the GFRP and clay, and the firing temperatures. Then the density, water absorption and bending strength of the specimens were examined by the experiment. From obtained results, it was found that the bending strength of tiles was higher, as the particle size of the GFRP was smaller, and that the effect the particle size of the GFRP on bending strength of tiles was bigger, as the firing temperature was higher. It was also found that the mixing ratio of the GFRP and clay and the firing temperature greatly affected the water absorption of tiles, and the particle size of the GFRP was not effective for the water absorption. It was demonstrated that tiles with both the high strength and water absorption could be made when GFRP with the particle size of 1mm or less was used and the firing temperature was over 1000 degrees.

A process for recycling waste glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) is proposed. In this process, porous glass fiber reinforced ceramics are produced by mixing clay with crushed waste GFRP and firing the mixture. The properties of tiles produced following this process and their applications are examined in this paper. First, several types of ceramic specimens (tiles) are produced using different firing temperatures and mixing ratios of crushed GFRP and clay. Next, the microstructure of each specimen is observed using scanning electron and optical microscopes. The density, bending strength and water absorption of the specimens are then examined in detail by comparison with those of porous tiles produced by mixing clay with plastic lacking glass fiber. The results show that the porous tiles containing glass fiber produced by our process possess high strength and water absorption. Finally, tiles are produced using actual waste GFRP as the raw material, and an example of the application of these tiles as a base material for vegetation is shown. Our results show that waste GFRP can be used effectively to produce porous ceramics.

Recently, the impulsive riveting method can join the sheets without drilling as well as disjoin easily the jointed sheets has been developed. The riveting method is carried out by the following process. (1) A rivet set on the sheets is struck into the sheets using a high-speed (100m/s and above) weight accelerated in the compressed air. (2) The axis of the struck rivet penetrates the sheets. (3) The rivet axis which passed a hole of a rivet holder set under the sheets collides with a pin inserted in the die, and the rivet axis and the rivet holder are jointed by the plastic deformation of the rivet axis owing to the collision. The sheets are tightened by the head of the rivet and the rivet holder. From the results of the joining for cold-reduced carbon steel sheets, aluminum sheets and the combination of dissimilar sheet metals such as an aluminum sheet and a steel sheet, it was clarified that the joint made by the impulsive riveting had the strength equal to the joint made by caulking. The deformation of joined sheets was also small. However, the impulsive riveting method needs the large scale equipment in order to utilize the impulsive energy and the control of the impulsive energy is very difficult. If it is able to join the sheets by pressing the rivet and punching the sheets using a universal press machine, it is considered that the riveting method using the rivet and the rivet holder is very useful because new and special equipments are not required and the work efficiency is also improved if small and simple equipments can be used. Therefore, the development of the punching rivet method that could perform punching and joining of the sheets by pressing the rivet was attempted. In this study, the punching rivet method was applied to the joining of cold-reduced carbon steel sheets. The deformation and the strength of the joints were examined in comparison with those of the joints made by caulking and the impulsive riveting method. From the results, the joint strength of the joint made by punching rivet method was almost equal in comparison with those of the joint made by caulking and the impulsive riveting method. The deformation of the joints by the punching rivet method was slightly larger than that of the joint by the impulsive riveting method, but it was considerably smaller than that of the joint by caulking.

Authors have previously proposed a process for recycling waste GFRP. In this process, porous glass fiber reinforced ceramics were produced by mixing clay and the crushed waste GFRP, and then firing the mixture (1). In this paper, the bending strength of tiles produced using the waste GFRP such as the sprue and runner produced in the injection molding was examined. From the results, it was clarified that the porous tiles reinforced by glass fibers had high strength. In addition, the relationship between the strength of tiles and the mixture ratio of clay and resin was clarified. On the basis of the experimental results, the equation which can estimate the bending strength of the porous tiles reinforced by glass fibers was proposed.

A model equation for estimating the ground water levels using Landsat TM data was examined in this paper, based on the results of site investigation of land cover contexts and ground water levels in Yoron Island. Firstly, land cover classification was conducted by supervised classification and the monitoring wells sited in agricultural areas were extracted. The data collected in these wells was used for estimating the ground water levels as the site investigation data. Next, a model equation for estimating the ground water levels was created by inter-band calculations among the CCT values of the TM data as independent variables in the multiple regression analysis. The validity of this model equation was proved by applying it to the other monitoring wells where the collected data was not used for creating the equation. Then, the model equation was found out to be generally applicable for estimating the ground water levels within the limits of approximately 5-20m.
