We investigated forest floor cover, the amount of transported soil, and litter fall in a hinoki plantation adjacent to an evergreen broadleaf forest set as the shelterbelt on a ridge in order to evaluate the edge effect on surface soil conservation for the hinoki plantation by the litter from the shelterbelt. High values of broadleaf litter fall and forest floor cover, and a low value of transported soil, were observed closer to the edge. Generalized linear modeling suggested that transported soil was strongly affected by the forest floor cover, the percentage of which was largely dependent on the broadleaf litter fall, which was mainly determined by the distance from the edge. These results suggested that the direct supply of litter from the shelterbelt conserves the surface soil of the hinoki plantation around the forest edge.

Journal of Applied Ecology © 2016 British Ecological SocietyFor biodiversity conservation to be an effective and significant social investment, non-marketed values of biodiversity conservation and its associated opportunity costs should be evaluated in monetary terms. In this study, we measured the willingness to pay (WTP) for bird abundance using a choice experiment (CE) based on the random utility model. We performed a cost–benefit analysis to identify the optimal proportion of broadleaved trees in conifer plantations on a volume basis to maximize the social benefits of bird conservation and wood production. The results suggested that respondents to the CE were not satisfied with their current situation and preferred an increase in bird abundance. However, the estimated WTP indicated diminishing returns of bird conservation. More specifically, WTP first greatly increased before gradually experiencing decreasing marginal values, reaching its peak and finally decreasing slightly with increasing bird abundance. Optimization analyses indicated that when the relationship between bird abundance and broadleaved tree proportion was convex, semi-natural plantations with nonzero broadleaved tree proportion (0·02–0·22) were always optimal options. When the relationship was linear, optimal broadleaved tree proportion ranged from 0 to 0·78 and was greatly affected by wood values. When the relationship was concave, there were only two optimal broadleaved tree proportions: a very high proportion (approximately 0·90) and the lowest possible proportion (0). When the convex and concave relationships approached the linear form, comparable benefits could be attained across broad ranges of broadleaved tree proportion both within and across the relationships. In such cases, it would be useful to increase the likelihood of a feasible land-use strategy of either land sparing or land sharing in order to be successful. Synthesis and applications. It can be difficult to set quantitative targets in biodiversity conservation solely on an ecological basis, and social benefits of biodiversity conservation can create diminishing returns in many situations. The framework we propose shows how to reconcile resource production and biodiversity conservation in the real world.

© 2015, The Japanese Forest Society and Springer Japan.The positive and negative effects of the residual stand edge at a strip-clearcut site were examined on the initial growth of hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) planted in areas with diverse topography. On the south edge, the gap light index was lower than on the north edge and strip center; however, the vapor pressure deficit was also lower than on the north edge and strip center, which resulted in lower physiological stress of hinoki on the south edge. Tree size on the south edge did not exceed that on the north edge and strip center. These results indicated that low light conditions due to residual trees negatively affected growth on the south edge even under the positive effect of microclimate alleviation. In valley, tree size in the second year after planting was smaller than on ridge and slope; however, tree growth during the following 2 years was higher in valley. Surface soil in valley was thinner with rockier substrates than on ridge and slope; that is, soil sedimentation type and substrates influenced the initial growth of hinoki with undeveloped roots, and after that, topography started to influence growth, probably because hinoki roots penetrated into deeper soil, which is influenced by the water gathering capacity of the valley. The initial growth of hinoki at the strip-clearcut site was predominantly affected by light rather than microclimate alleviation. This alleviation is expected to disappear when hinoki trees planted in the strip center grow enough to give additional shade to slow-growing edge hinoki.

カンボジアでは1994年にコミュニティフォレスト(CF)が開設され、現地住民がその運営を行っている。CFの多くは過剰伐採等で劣化した二次林であるため、用材生産に向けて間伐等による質的改善が必要とされている。間伐は一般的に種間や幹間の競争緩和や不良形質木の除去を目的として実施されるが、天然生林の間伐では、それによって有用樹種のみが残され、結果的に多様性が低下する恐れがある。そこで、有用樹種以外の中でNTFPとして利用される樹種を積極的に残していくことができれば、種多様性を比較的高い状態で維持した間伐が実施できると予想される。そのためには、まず現地住民の間伐に対する考え方を知る必要がある。本研究では、カンボジアの間伐の実態を知るとともに、現地CF運営委員の選木基準と、それに伴う林分構造変化について明らかにすることを目的とした。CFにおいて樹種および胸高直径の毎木調査を行った。同林分で現地CF運営委員6名に伐採木・保残木を選定してもらい、同時に選木理由を記録した。これらの調査結果を基に、間伐における選木性向を解析した。また、選木結果から予測される林分構造を評価し、種多様性の変化について考察した。

森林生態系において樹冠葉量を正確に推定する簡易手法の開発が求められている。これまでの研究で,生枝下断面積(A<sub>B</sub>)と樹冠葉量は,森林の管理状態に関わらず高い相関関係を示しパイプモデルが成り立つことが明らかにされた。また,生枝下断面積を樹高(H),生枝下高(H<sub>B</sub>),胸高断面積(A<sub>1.3</sub>)から簡易に推定する手法が提案された。この二つを組み合わせた簡易手法を高知県の3地域に当てはめ有効性を明らかにした。生枝下断面積をA<sub>1.3</sub>[(H-H<sub>B</sub>)/(H-1.3)]から推定した結果,傾きが1に近い値を示す共通の直線式で推定することができた。樹冠葉量をA<sub>1.3</sub>やH×A<sub>1.3</sub>から推定した場合には,地域によって回帰直線の傾きや切片に差が生じた。樹冠葉量をA<sub>B</sub>やA<sub>1.3</sub> [(H-H<sub>B</sub>)/(H-1.3)]から推定した場合には,すべての地域で回帰直線の傾きが1に近い値を示し,地域によって切片に差が認められた。これらの結果は,生枝下断面積あたりの樹冠葉量は地域ごとに一定の値を示し,パイプモデルが成り立つことを示唆する。既往の研究を含めた6地域において生枝下断面積あたりの樹冠葉量は,年平均気温が高い地域で大きい傾向が認められた。

The effects of late weeding treatment on the growth of young hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) during the sixth growing season after planting were examined. Furthermore, the contribution toward hinoki growth recovery of crown productivity (NAR) and biomass allocation to crown (CAR) were determined. In the late weeding plot, no decline in height growth was observed subsequent to weeding, and growth in diameter at breast height (DBH) and crown projection area (CPA) began to recover subsequent to weeding; however, DBH and CPA were reduced and experienced a 1- to 1.5-year growth delay compared to values associated with the weeding plot at the end of the second year subsequent to weeding. Relative growth rate (RGR) and NAR in the late weeding plot recovered and possessed similar values to those of the weeding plot in the second year subsequent to weeding. CAR values of the late weeding plot were similar to those of the weeding plot both before and after weeding. These results suggested that the recovery of NAR rather than that of CAR was primarily responsible for the recovery of RGR. The present study demonstrated that hinoki were able to quickly acclimate to an environment dramatically altered by late weeding and recover growth rate within a short period of time. The present study also showed that delays in crown expansion associated with late weeding may have impeded subsequent matter production. Therefore, it was concluded that late weeding treatments should be employed only when the associated delays in growth are taken into account.
