Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been applied to pig monitoring. Among these, electronic tags help identify individual growing-finishing pigs. Nevertheless, the tags are insufficient to achieve accurate and reliable monitoring in pigsties. Instead, advanced processing data for individual behaviors, such as visit times in the feeding and resting areas and the number of movements between these areas, are required. Numerically measuring the movements of individual pigs in the pigsty is a precondition for obtaining these data. This paper proposes a monitoring scheme of a large herd of pigs for individual identification and counting. As a technical solution, a monitoring system is developed using Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) tags and wireless broadband leaky coaxial cable (WBLCX) antennas. The monitoring system collects access data transmitted from the BLE tags attached to individual pigs. Then the monitoring scheme estimates the location and movement of each pig by computing the collected data. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate the detection characteristics between the BLE tags and the WBLCX antennas and to show their performances. In addition, the effectiveness for the proposed area-determination algorithm and the monitoring system was verified by field experiments on a pig farm in Japan. Our experimental results are summarized as follows. First, data comparisons between the area-determination algorithm and visual inspections confirmed the validity of the proposed monitoring scheme. Secondly, by the monitoring scheme, the area movements and the dwell times of pigs in a pigsty could be investigated. From the experimental results, the use of the proposed monitoring is expected to be able to observe the locations and movements for large herds of pigs in the pigsty. This paper proposes a monitoring scheme based on identifying and counting of individual pigs, explains the details of the monitoring scheme on the basis of hardware configurations, and verifies its effectiveness and feasibility via experiments.

This paper proposes a design automation method to optimize one-time-use leaping mechanism for relocating energy-constrained sensor nodes. The leaping mechanism is expected to enhance coverage and connectivity of sensor networks initially randomly deployed with minimum energy consumed. Of particular interest is proper relocation of isolated nodes under uncertain environment conditions. Specifically, we consider how the aerodynamic disturbance can be minimized with an optimized launch angle of the leaping mechanism. To construct an automated simulation and design environment, the process integration and design optimization (PIDO) approach is employed. We not only obtain an optimum solution satisfying all imposed requirements, but also demonstrate an automated design process for controlled node mobility. © 2011 IEEE.

Diseases in the gastro-intestinal tract are on an increasing trend. In order to diagnose a patient, various signals of the digestive organ, such as temperature, pH, and pressure, can offer the helpful information. Among the above mentioned signals, we choose the pressure variation as a monitoring signal. The variation of a pressure signal of the gastro-intestinal tract can offer the information of a digestive trouble or some clues of the diseases. In this paper, a pressure monitoring system for the digestive organs of a living pig is presented. This is why a pig's gastro-intestinal tract is very similar as human's. This system concept is to transmit the measured biomedical signals from a transmitter in a living pig to a wireless receiver that is positioned out of body. The integrated solution includes the following parts: (1) the swallow type pressure capsule, (2) the receiving set consisting of a receiver, decoder box, and PC. The merit of the proposed system is that the monitoring system can supply the precise and repeatable pressure in the gastro-intestinal tract. In addition, the design of low power consumption enables it to keep sending reliable signals while the pressure capsule is working in the digestive organ. The subject of the study for the pressure monitoring system is in-vivo experiments for a living pig. We achieved the pressure tracings in digestive organs and verified the validity of system after several in-vivo tests using the pressure monitoring system. As a result, we found each organ has its own characterized pressure fluctuation. ©2005 IEEE.
