Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) with a wavelength of 100-200 nm has a photon energy of about 6-12 eV, which is higher than the binding energy of many substances, and has the feature of being able to break chemical bonds. We have applied these features to develop an analyzer named the Photon-stimulated Desorption Spectrometer. Since the spatial and temporal resolutions of this system are low due to adaption of incoherent light source, it is expected to improve by replacing the light source with an ultrashort pulsed VUV laser. In the present study, we have developed a focusing and irradiating system that enables various laser irradiation modes by overlapping multiple beams spatially and temporally. High-precision position control of the focusing and irradiating system is necessary for this purpose. Here, we used a number of micrometers with encoder that can be computercontrolled with a resolution of 1 μm to develop a double beam focusing and irradiating system using currently available ultrashort pulsed lasers with wavelengths of 800 nm and 400 nm. As a results, we confirmed that the smaller spot diameter was obtained by using the shorter wavelength. The spatial superposition can be performed within an accuracy range of ±3 μm, and the temporal superposition can be performed with an accuracy of 33 fs. Besides, interference fringes were obtained by angled irradiation of two light beams which can be expected to induce desorption in finer areas.

To obtain important information for fabricating atomic-scale Au thin films that are used for biosensors, we have examined the flushing temperature for forming the Si(111) clean surface and observed the morphology of Au particles adsorbed by Pulsed Laser Deposition method on a Si(111)-7×7 surface by STM, which is supposed to be the initial stage of Au atomistic thin film formation. As the result of this study, it was found that flushing temperature must be controlled within 5℃ and we can fix the flushing requirement by STM images. Besides, we have estimated that Au particles are adsorbed on the position which is about 0.21 ± 0.03 nm away from the center of Si adatom.

We have developed the fabrication technique of high precision optical sensor by laser processing. In order to know growth process of atomic-level Au thin films, we have observed Au particles deposited by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method on Si clean surface by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). As a result, the film-shaped clusters were found to have a structure of nearly monoatomic layers. We also demonstrated that a simple technique combining a 266 nm laser and a phase mask was quite effective at fabricating Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer based on FBG and the fiber end-face. The interference pattern of the FP interferometer became sharper than that of one FBG.

In order to know growth process of atomic-level Au thin films, we have observed Au particles deposited by the pulsed laser deposition(PLD) method on Si clean surface by an ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope(UHV-STM). As the result of examination for forming the Si(111) cleaned surface, it was found that temperature of flushing should be controlled within 5℃. Besides, we have successfully estimated that the strucuture of the film-like cluster of Au is almost monoatomic layer based on the face-centered cubic(fcc) sturucture.

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) have been used for measuring various physical quantities, such as distortion, temperature, refractive index and so on. These physical quantities are estimated from amount of the peak shifts of the core modes of the FBG. The narrower the main peak, the more precision measurement is expected. Besides, it is also expected for the precise measurement to obtain single isolated main peak without any additional peaks so-called side lobes. From this point of view, we have tried to reduce the intensity of the side lobes by means of the Moiré apodization technique, and to get a narrower main peak by utilizing the Fabry-Perot interferometer with FBGs (FP-FBG).

Au particles were adsorbed on the clean Si surface using a PLD method, and the adsorbed particles were observed using a scanning tunneling microscope. As the number of laser shots was increased in the PLD method, the size of the adsorbed particle became larger. The larger particles seemed to form clusters, which are aggregations of particles in which each particle is distinguished, so we call this type of cluster a film-shaped cluster. In this work, we have mainly analyzed this type of cluster. As a result the film-shaped clusters were found to have a structure of nearly monoatomic layers. The particles in the clusters were gathered closely in roughly a 3-fold structure with an inter particle distance of 0.864 nm. We propose a model for the cluster structure by modifying Au(111) face so that each observed particle consists of three Au atoms.

Tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) is expected to be used for such sensors as refractometers, twist sensors, liquid level sensors, chemical sensors and biosensors. We review its fabrication techniques and its refractive index measurements and developed a simplified technique to fabricate TFBG for simultaneous measurements of the refractive index and the temperatures of liquids. We used a combination of a 4ω Nd:YAG laser and a phase mask, which is simpler than a conventional method using a 2ω cw Ar+ laser and a Lloyd mirror interferometer. We calculated TFBG’s cladding modes by the multi-layer method and estimated the temperature coefficient of the water’s refractive index to be about -1×10-4 /K using our fabricated TFBG sensor.

© 2016 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.We considered the influence of the core and cladding diameters on the simultaneous measurement of the refractive index and temperature of liquids using a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG). When the cladding diameter of a TFBG was only reduced from 125 to 123 μm, the calculated refractive index differed by 0.0068 from the expected value. When the core diameter was reduced from 9.6 to 7.8 μm, the change was less than 0.0005. We found that equalization of cladding diameter is required to improve the precision of the simultaneous measurement of the refractive index and temperature of liquids.

We have developed a simplified technique to fabricate tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) for simultaneous measurement of the refractive index and temperature of liquids in biochemical and medical applications. We used a combination of a 4ω Nd:YAG laser and a phase mask, which is simpler than the conventional method using a 2ω cw Ar+ laser and a Lloyd mirror interferometer. The peak of the cladding mode of the TFBG shifted to the longer wavelength side as the refractive index of liquid increased. Furthermore, both the peak of the cladding mode and that of the core mode shifted to the longer wavelength side as the temperature of liquid increased. We found that a refractive index from 1 to 1.41, and a temperature from 293 to 353 K could be measured with a single probe of the fabricated TFBGs.

We successfully achieved the poly-crystallized coatings of bio-active hydroxyapatite on titanium plates. We used several ceramic HAp targets sintered at a temperature of 500°C, 700°C, 900°C and 1100°C, and irradiation by KrF excimer laser at a fluence of about 4J/cm2. The depositions were performed under 1Torr H2O atmosphere at room temperature. In this condition, a poly-crystallized HAp layer was formed only using a target sintered at 900°C. We estimated the charged fragments from these targets by a simple ion-probe collection and found that the energy distribution of charged fragments depended on the densities of the targets. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We have deposited hydroxyapatite (HAp) films on Ti substrate by pulsed laser deposition using KrF excimer laser. We used HAp targets sintered at temperatures of 500, 700, 900 and 1100 °C with densities between 1.5 and 2.4 mg/mm3. SEM images of the coating surface revealed that the deposited films had spherical structures with diameter of 5 μm. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis showed that the deposited films contained amorphous HAp. Films deposited with a target sintered at 900°C showed that poly-crystallized HAp coating was achieved at room temperature. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract ###Refractive indices of silica glass are well known to change when ultra violet light is irradiated. ###With the photo-refractive effect, regions with different refractive indices are generated in an optical ###fiber. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) that has a periodic structure of different refractive indices shows a ###sharp reflection spectrum at a wavelength. The center wavelength, width, depth and sub peaks of the ###reflection spectrum depend on the periodicity, index difference, and index distribution of the structure. ###However, it is considerably difficult to measure the indices of the structure, because the size is as ###small as an order of optical wavelength used. I simulate the reflection spectra by changing the length ###and intensity distribution within the laser beam and index change. By comparing the simulated ###spectra with there measured, I have found that the laser beam has Gaussian-type intensity distribution ###and that the spectra depend on the length and index change distribution. On the basis of the ###simulation, you can obtain the laser parameters for fabricating a desirable FGB.

Abstract ###Recently in the field of architecture and civil, there is a great demand high performance sensor ###for Health Monitoring to guarantee the efficiency of buildings. Optical Fiber sensor development is ###now being watched with interest because it is not influenced magnetic field. Therefore it takes ###place of the strain sensors which using bridge connection until now. FBG that can apply as strain ###sensor was fabricated based on the UV photosensitivity of germanosilicate in the fiber core. The ###interference fringe was generated exposuring UV light through the phase mask with KrF Excimer ###Laser, this interference fringe made Brag Gratings in the Optical fiber core. FBG fabrication was ###performed changing rep-rate from 1OHZ to 600Hz,exposuring fluences from 5 to 20mmJ/cm(2乗). The ###specification value which demand as strain sensor is that the time of reach 1OdB refractivity is ###within 300 seconds, the spectrum wave shape of FWHM is within 1OOpm, the fraction strain after ###exposed UV light is 3.2%. In our observation we could attain that minimum of fabricating time is 6 ###seconds, exposuring length of a fiber line keeps above 8mm, which could minimize FWHM ###38pm,the maximum fracture strain afier exposed UV light is 5.79% to controlling exposuring ###fluences. The change in refractive index and second-order optical nonlinearity in silica glasses by a combination of x-ray irradiation and thermal poling are discussed. Two kinds of second-order optical nonlinearity, bulk nonlinearity spreading throughout the whole sample and near-surface nonlinearity localized in a thin layer near the sample surface are observed. A change in refractive index in the sample is also found. Both the bulk nonlinearity and the refractive index change, based on absorption spectra of the samples, are found to be associated with point defects.

Ultraviolet laser pulses were found to introduce and destroy point defects that play a key role in the generation of second-order optical nonlinearities by thermal poling in high-purity silica glasses. The characteristics of the generation process depended largely on not only ≡Si-OH, O2, and H2 content of the glasses but also the sequence of thermal poling and the pulse irradiation. There were two different kinds of nonlinearity: one localized in a thin layer near the sample surface (near-surface) and a bulk one spreading throughout the sample. The near-surface and bulk nonlinearities are associated with ≡Si-O- and ≡Si≡Si≡, respectively. © 2002 Optical Society of America.

We prepare composite materials that Ag_2Te grains were dispersed in AgBiTe_2 matrices with the compositions of (AgBiTe_2)_<1-x>(Ag_2Te)_x. The textures depend on the composition. We measured electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficients and Hall coefficients as a function of the composition. Based on these data, we estimate Hall mobility and lattice thermal conductivity, and finally thermoelectric figure of merit. We show that the figure of merit is enhanced in the composite system by means of enhancement of phonon scattering at the grain boundaries.

A large second-order optical nonlinearity has been found to be generated in various kinds of silica glasses in which an even-order optical nonlinearity is inherently prohibited. Thermal poling is a typical procedure to generate such a second-order optical nonlinearity, but a mechanism behind the generation is not elucidated completely. It should be pointed out, however, that the nonlinearity was not added to high-purity silica glasses by poling. In this article, we show that the nonlinearity is generated in high-purity silica glasses irradiated by a KrF excimer laser before poling. We also show that the laser pulses erase the nonlinearity induced in the glasses. In addition to the laser irradiation effects on the generation and erasure, optical absorption and luminescence spectra in the glasses show that point defects of ≡Si-O- play a key role for the nonlinearity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

The ultra-soft X-ray emission spectra were taken from surfaces of bulk silica glass and silica glass films exposed to an argon excimer laser (λ = 126 nm) and compared with the spectra taken from the virgin surfaces. The precipitation of crystalline silicon is found to take place in thin surface layers of the irradiated bulk silica glass and 15 nm film. An estimation of concentration of crystalline silicon precipitation with the depth is given on the basis of the measurements of Si L2,3 X-ray emission spectra obtained at different accelerating voltages of the electron beam on the X-ray tube. Based upon the precipitation conditions for these samples, we discuss the crystalline silicon precipitation mechanism: the electronic excitation induces the bond-breaking between Si and O atoms, although there is a critical density of photons for the bond-breaking and temperature rise enhances the crystalline silicon precipitation. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Exposure of silicon nitride to above-bandgap 6.5-eV photons from an ArF excimer laser drives both the dissociation of silicon-nitrogen bonds and the desorption of nitrogen atoms and/or molecules over a wide fluence range. Crystalline silicon precipitates are also generated on laser exposed surfaces, however, only for fluences exceeding 0.2 J/cm2. The rates of nitrogen desorption and the concentration of silicon precipitation were found to depend strongly on laser fluence, rising rapidly above 0.2 J/cm2, and saturating at ∼0.5 J/cm2. This saturation was also observed in the thickness of the silicon precipitate layer, which peaked at 35 nm depth for fluences >0.5 J/cm2. Such saturation phenomena can be explained by the onset of laser ablation at ∼0.5 J/cm2 fluence which removes material in the laser affected zone. The formation of silicon precipitates is discussed in the context of photochemical reactions that follow band-to-band electronic transitions. ©2004 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

We observed a strong second-order optical nonlinearity in a fused silica glass poled under the condition of a static electric field of 4 kV/mm at 260°C. The nonlinearity layer was localized in the surface region contacted on the positive electrode during poling in a thickness comparable to or thinner than the interaction length of 22 μm. The second-order nonlinearity was not observed in synthetic silica glass under the same poling condition. However, when the synthetic glass was first exposed to x-ray radiation, the poling induced a nonlinearity of almost the same value as that in the fused silica glass, which we attribute to the x-ray formation of defects. The values were found to depend on water contents in the synthetic silica glass. © 1997 Optical Society of America.

The results of measurements of Si-L2,3 X-ray emission spectra of Si3N4 films deposited on GaAs substrates after irradiation by Kr2 and Ar2 excimer lasers are presented. By using the excitation of X-ray emission spectra with focused electron beam, local precipitation of crystalline silicon is found.
