Reverse micelles, which are self-aggregates of surfactant molecules in apolar organic phase, have the ability to extract proteins from aqueous phase [1]. One intensively studied surfactant is sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). The development of new effective reverse micellar systems for protein extraction have been expected. Previously, we reported that the addition of either long chain alkyl amines [2] or water-soluble amines [3] to the extraction system using AOT reverse micelles is effective for the extraction of proteins by the control of pH. In this study, the effect of the addition of diethanollauramide, which is expected to interact moderately with AOT, in the organic phase on the extraction of water and bovine serum albumin (BSA) into the reverse micellar phase was investigated.

To keep long life time of the elecroless nickel plating bath the removal phosphorous acid from the plating bath is necessary. The cognition of equilibria and rate of extraction for the system were required to develop the extraction process. In our previous paper [1], extraction equilibrium of phosphorous acid (A) in the aqueous solution with toluene solution of tri-n-octyl amine TOA (B) was investigated and shown to produce AB, (AB)2 and A2B3 type species by the consecutive reactions of undissociated acid and TOA. Their equilibrium constants were evaluated. In this study, rate of extraction of phosphorous acid from the aqueous plating bath by TOA was investigated in a vibro-mixer type extractor.

We newly synthesized poly(ethyleneoxide-co-monooleate-block-co-D,L-lactide) (MOPEO-PLA). Poly(ethyleneoxide-co-monooleate) (MOPE O), which is highly water-soluble polymer surfactant, has a double bond and hydrophilic PEO segment. PEO has a good biocompatibility and is less interactive with living cells. Polylactide (PLA) is biodegradable and non-toxic polymer. Therefore, block copolymer of MOPEO and D,L-lactide has the potential for functional biocompatible hydrophobic polymer surfactant. It was reported from in our previous study that MOPEO-PLA had sufficient surface activity as well as MOPEO [1]. From this reason, we tried to form a polymer reverse micelle using MOPEO-PLA for bioseparation of proteins.

Novel Recovering System of Nickel in Waste Water with Solvent Extraction Technique

The recovery process of nickel in the wastewater of electroless nickel-plating was constructed by the solvent extraction with 5-dodecylsalicylaldoxime in the kerosene solution. The extraction rate using a vibro-mixer type extractor for this system was investigated. The result was analyzed based on the information of extraction equilibrium and interfacial reaction rate determined by the result in Lewis type transfer cell. The extraction in the vibro-mixer type extractor was interpreted by the similar interfacial reaction equation derived in Lewis type transfer cell. The rate constant of the reaction was enhanced to 107 time of that in Lewis type transfer cell, and was enhanced by the increase in the interfacial area and surface renewal rate caused by forming of small droplets by vibration of plates.

The extraction equilibrium of hypophosphorous acid, phosphorous acid and phosphoric acid in aqueous solution with tri-n-octylamine (hereafter called TOA) in toluene were investigated at 303K. The species formed and formation equilibrium constants were determined by a graphical analysis method. The experimental results were analyzed by considering the acid dissociation of aqueous phase.

Reverse micelles have been extensively investigated as media for the extraction of proteins [1]. One intensively studied surfactant is sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT). Microcapsules or micro particle has been usually manufactured by batch reactor process. These processes have some problems on mass production and uniform characteristic of products , production cost etc. In previously, the preparation and characteristics for microcapsules containing protein, inorganic salt or agricultural chemicals by in-situ polymerization or solvent evaporation method were reported. In this study, semi- batch system for manufacturing microcapsule was provided for styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer micro particle. The micro particle was cleared to be prepared continuously 25 times speed of batch system by semi-batch system provided in this study. The effects of preparation conditions on the morphologies and functions of micro particle prepared in semi-batch system were investigated.

Cross- linked microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization and biodegradable microcapsules were pre pared by solvent evaporation method. The effects of preparation conditions on the capsule morphology and entrapment efficiency of inorganic salt were investigated. The average diameter of the surface pores and internal follows were controlled with sub-micron order by changing preparation conditions such as volume fraction of dispersed droplets in (W/O) emulsion, surfactant concentration, monomer ratio and salt concentration in the outer aqueous phase. Furthermore , the entrapment efficiency of inorganic salt was improved by lowering the volume fraction of dispersed droplets in (W /0) emulsion and adding the salt to the outer aqueous phase.

Semi-batch System for Preparation of Micro-sphere with Vibro-mixer Type Reactor and Emulsifier

Micro-spheres have been usually prepared by a batch system in a reactor. In this study, the micro-spheres were prepared by a semi-batch operation of five parallel settled vibro-mixed reactors and a series connected continuous vibro-mixed emulsifier with controlling the switch of valves set in pipe lines for emulsion feed and washing water. Oil containing wall materials in water emulsion prepared by the emulsifier was put into the first step of vibro-mixed reactor, and in one by one in the reactors by the switch of the valves. And then, the wall materials in the first step reactor were polymerized (solvent evaporated) during the filling time for all reactors. Micro-sphere particle prepared after polymerization were taken out set by set, intermittently. After taking out micro-sphere, emulsion feed was put again into the reactor. The effects on characteristics of the micro-spheres were investigated for various concentrations of monomer and surfactants, volume fraction of dispersion phase and vibration frequencies etc.. Diameters of the micro-sphere decreased with increasing of the vibration frequency of emulsifier. However, diameters of micro-sphere were almost independent on the frequency of vibration of the reactors, steps of reactors and recycle numbers of the operations. The concentrations of related species affected greatly on the formation of micro-particle.

Biodegradable microcapsules entrapping activated carbon impregnated with fenestration (MEP) which is used as a pesticide were prepared by the solvent evaporation method in a (solid/oil/water) complex emulsion system. Biodegradable poly-ε-caprolactam (PCL) was used as a wall material. Effects of the preparation conditions, such as the concentrations of PCL and MEP and weight fraction of activated carbon, on the capsule morphology, entrapment efficiency and release profile of MEP were investigated. The microcapsules were able to be successfully prepared under the condition in which there were relatively large quantities of PCL and activated carbon for MEP. The average diameter of the microcapsules increased with an increase in the concentration and molecular weight of PCL and the amount of activated carbon, and with a decrease in the concentration of surfactant in the aqueous phase, the fraction of the dispersed oil phase in the aqueous phase and the agitation speed of the emulsion. The entrapment fraction of MEP into the microcapsules was almost over 90 % in all preparation conditions. MEP encapsulated in the microcapsules was released to water until the MEP concentration in water was reached its saturated concentration. The release rate of MEP decreased with increasing the concentration of PCL. The release profile of MEP would be able to control by the preparation condition of the microcapsules.

Biodegradable microcapsules were prepared by the solvent evaporation method. The effect of the experimental conditions on the adsorption of organic acids such as lactic acid, acetic acid from wastewater were investigated using the biodegradable microcapsules which entrapped both the extractant and the adsorbent. The amount of adsorbed organic acids in using biodegradable microcapsules were greater than the case of the simple extractant substance or simple adsorbent substance. In addition, the amount of absorbed organic acid dramatically increased by controlling the structure of the microcapsule, the entrapment efficiency of the adsorbent and the extractant into the microcapsule. The Freundlich equations, Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation and B.E.T. equation explained the obtained experimental result. From these analytical results, the adsorption equilibrium constant and unimolecule saturation absorbed amount were calculated.

It was found that shochu manufacturing using the waste water of a shochu distillery as a adding water for the next fermentation (repeated-batch fermentation) was possible. When the repeated use number of the waste water was within twice, quality of the fermentation products was almost same to them by the usual fermentation. When the mixture solution of equal volumes of the waste water and distilled water was used for the fermentation, the formation rate of ethanol did not change in spite of the repeated times of the repeated-batch fermentation. The shochu mush (moromi) produced with the repeated-batch fermentation was distilled using a multi-staged batch distiller which has three stages for collecting distillate. The relations between compositions and distillation stages or times were investigated at various conditions. The composition of ethanol and other minute components in the distillate from each stage was almost equal regardless of the repeated times of the repeated-batch fermentation. Consequently, it was clear that the distillation composition of each component depends on the distillation time and the stage collecting distillate of distillation column.

The release rate of MEP decreased with increasing the concentration of PCL.
