Since the aging of electric facilities have become an important issue in Japan, safety of such facilities in operation and ensuring high reliability are highly demanded. It is also necessary for each electric power company to reduce the cost for maintaining, managing, operating, and updating facilities because of the electric power liberalization. For these backgrounds, some sorts of sophisticated technologies for on-line monitoring systems and deterioration diagnosis technologies are needed rapidly in order to avoid any electric failures. Our esearch is to develop partial discharge locator (PDL) which is to locate cable faults by detecting current pulses generated by partial discharges (PDs). This paper presented theoretical analysis of frequency characteristics of a PD pulse on a branch line for PDL adaptability of multiple branch lines by using a simulation software. In addition, as a comparison to the simulation, we also carried out experiments using actual XLPE cables and confirmed the integrity verification of the simulation results. In this paper, we investigated PD characteristics caused by water trees in XLPE cables. It was found out that PDs can be generated by water trees. Therefore, PDL can be used for locating water tree.

In recent years, insulation deterioration due to partial discharges (PDs) of power equipment molded with epoxy resin is concerned. In a solid insulation device molded with an insulator such as an epoxy resin, bubbles may remain in the resin during the manufacturing process, so that void defects sometimes occur. It is important to clarify the behavior of PD inside the defect from the occurrence to the failure from a viewing point of designing a safe and long-life solid insulation molded device. In this study, the PD occurrence probability and the PD ignition time were investigated. Also, the life characteristics of epoxy resin owing to PDs until a breakdown occurs was evaluated.

Water-tree degradation of underground cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables has been concerned. However, it seems that there is no reports of water-trees for XLPE cables with the termite preventive layer. We focus on investigation of a water shielding effect due to the termite preventive layer of the XLPE cable. The results showed that the water absorption rate of the insulting vinyl sheath was 3.18 times higher than that of a termite preventive layer at 70℃. Thus, the high - water shielding effect of XLPE cable with the termite preventive layer was confirmed.

At joint and terminal sections of electric power cables, there is possibility to occur partial discharges (PDs) in defects of insulating materials. Therefore, PD measurement is useful from a viewpoint of assessing insulation deterioration of electric power cables. There are some measurement systems to locate PDs, however, it is quite difficult and complicated in the case where cable lines include branched lines because the PD current pulse separately flows at the branch line. To establish a PD location system, the investigation of propagation characteristics of PD current pulse for branched lines is necessary. Based on EMTP simulations and experiments, we evaluated how a PD current pulse propagates at a Y-branch. The results showed that the separation of a PD current pulse is dependent on frequency component of the PD current pulse and the cable impedance after branching. The frequency components of a PD current pulse, which are higher than the resonant frequency of lines, tend to flow into the longer cable side.

For transmission and distribution lines, cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable plays an important role in distributing the stable power to customers. Electric failure for the XLPE cable decreases year by year because of progress of manufacturing. However, at joint and terminal sections of the XLPE cable, partial discharges (PDs) occur in defects of insulating materials. The PD is a precursor to dielectric breakdown. Once PD occurs, it continuously erodes insulation material. The demand of reliable power systems is quite crucial for all of power companies, and then it is demanded to develop an on-line PD measurement technique and a monitoring system.
In this study, we propose a PD locating system for XLPE cables in operation, in which the propagation velocity of PD current is not required for locating a PD. We first show how the locating system works on a XLPE cable network with time synchronization between two points. Additionally, the locating accuracy of the system is investigated. -
