Deriving five growth functions from bertalanffy function based on symmetry and complexity

This study was designed to derive five growth functions from Bertalanffy function using symmetry and complexity of them by relating each function to its first and second derivatives. The results obtained were as follows. In equations constructed by relating functions to their derivatives, the left-hand sides were the same in form, but the right-hand sides showed differences from the symmetry essential to exponential function. These differences were related to complexity of functions approaching asymptotes. The asymptotic properties of five functions were shown by phenomena that the right-hand sides tended to zero as í tended to infinity. Six growth functions arranged by the complexity were Bertalanffy > Richards > Mitscherlich = logistic = Gompertz > basic growth. Despite different function forms, Mitscherlich, logistic and Gompertz functions were not distinguished each other from the viewpoint of complexity, a kind of symmetry existing at the base of them. Based on symmetry and complexity, five growth functions were derived from Bertalanffy function, a hierarchic structure of growth functions from Bertalanffy function on down.

This study was designed to make a comparison between Richards growth function, its family growth functions and basic growth function. Each growth function was combined with its first and second derivatives. The results obtained were as follows. Mitscherlich, logistic and Gompertz growth functions, each of which was a special case of Richards growth function, took a common form when combined with first and second derivatives. In the case of Richards growth function, there was an additional m when compared with the common form. The present study showed that Richards growth function resulted in its family growth functions when m = 0, and collapsed into basic growth function when m = 1. These were contradictory to the results by Richards (1959), except Mitscherlich growth function that was given when m = 0. There was a gap impossible to jump over between basic growth function and each of Mitscherlich, logistic and Gompertz growth functions. It was suggested that Richards growth function existed between a group of its family growth functions and basic growth function.

This study was designed to conduct analyses of canopy structure of forage plants by applying the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence to the infinite series of exponential function with base e used for analyses of production structures in forage plants. The results obtained were as follows. (1) The product of light extinction coefficient (K) and leaf area index (F) in the plant canopy took the value of golden ratio, where K and F were in inverse proportion. (2) The combination of large K and low F suggested the canopy leaves showing a horizontal inclination. (3) The small K and high F suggested the canopy leaves showing a vertical inclination. (4) These phenomena depended on the leaf inclination angle with which upper leaves shaded lower leaves, provided that other factors were the same. Therefore, the case (3) might give the canopy structure that was higher in the production of forage plants compared with the case (2). It was suggested that the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence, which appeared in the infinite series of exponential function with base e, were related to the analysis of canopy structure of forage plants.

This study was conducted to investigate growth dynamics and related problems by analyzing mathematical properties of whole solutions to modified differential equation for growth. This modified differential equation was obtained by relating basic growth function with its first and second derivatives. The results obtained were as follows. (1) Sixteen functions were whole solutions to the modified differential equation for growth. Each of weight, relative growth rate (RGR), time and exponential function with base e was given positive and negative signs, namely symmetries in them with respect to ± signs. Functions in which time was replaced with space were also taken up. (2) The conservation of positive weight, by avoiding negative weight, required the existence of the past and that of the environmental space. (3) There were time reversal and space inversion theoretically in functions. But actually there was a breakdown of those symmetries, because moving forward in time is the principle of information transmission and there is an effect of gravity determining the upper and lower sides. (4) The hypothesis that RGR in functions was a mixture of positive and negative RGRs was discussed in relation to metabolic turnover, compensatory growth and homeostasis. (5) The form of the modified differential equation for growth suggested analogies to laws of motion. It was suggested from the present study that growth dynamics and related problems resulted from conservation, symmetry and analogy in whole solutions to modified differential equation for growth.

This study was designed to investigate relationships between Richards growth function and basic growth function by comparing them using growth dynamics. There are inflection points in Richards growth function, but basic growth function expresses exponential curves only. To compare these two functions that are greatly different, the first and second derivatives were incorporated into each of them. The results obtained were as follows. Richards growth function was related to basic growth function when combined with derivatives and m = 1, though m = 1 was prohibited in Richards growth function itself. The occurrence of this relationship was a mathematical result of growth dynamics based on differential. It was suggested from the present study that Richards growth function was related to basic growth function when combined with the first and second derivatives.

水田を有効利用した飼料作物生産技術の開発を目的とし、良質飼料イネサイレージの調製・利用法を確立するため、日印交雑イネ36系統を用い1回刈りおよび2回刈り時の乾物収量およびサイレージの発酵品質を調査することにより、飼料イネとして利用可能な系統の検索を試みた。2回刈区1回目刈取は8月1日(出穂前)に行い、株あたり乾物重は5.3-11.4gの範囲にあった。2回刈区2回目の刈取および1回刈区の刈取は10月2日(黄熟-完熟期)に行い、株あたり乾物重は、前者で8.6-87.1g、後者で38.5-103.8gの範囲にあった。2回刈区における株あたり乾物重から算出した合計乾物収量は2000g/m2を超える系統も存在し、1回刈区における乾物収量においても2000g/m2を超え、2283g/m2を示す系統があった。株当たりの籾重から算出した籾収量において、1300g/m2を越える系統も存在し、飼料用米としての利用可能性も期待できた。サイレージの発酵品質については、乾物率が高い値を示すものほど発酵品質も良好なものとなり、V2-SCOREと乾物率の間に高い正の相関が認められた。

This study was conducted to investigate dynamics of Lotka-Volterra equation by introducing the second derivative for change acceleration in the number of predators and prey. Lotka-Volterra equation gives a simple model to the analysis of predator-prey relationships. The results obtained were as follows. Introducing the second derivative into Lotka-Volterra equation gave the square of change rate of the number of predators and that of prey. Since the square of change rate gave positive value, the following two inequalities were given. (1) Change acceleration of the number of prey per prey was higher than the product of -β and change rate of the number of predators. (2) Change acceleration of the number of predators per predator was higher than the product of 5 and change rate of the number of prey. These two might be related to the change in the number of predators and prey. It was suggested from the present study that investigating dynamics of Lotka-Volterra equation gave inequalities showing some change aspects of predator-prey relationships.
