Relatively little information is available on patch choice by ungulates grazing tropical grass swards despite extensive works on temperate grass swards. The present study tested various vegetation variables as a reward to cattle grazing patchy tropical grass swards. The study comprised three trials. Trials 1 and 3 used a pasture dominated by bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) and Japanese lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), and Trial 2 used a pasture dominated by centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack.). In each trial, three Japanese Black cows were allowed to graze for short periods (30 min) areas (20 m × 20 m) consisting of two equal-size patches, with combinations of patches of H-L, H-M and M-L (H, high; M, intermediate; L, low in height and mass). Patches were created by varying regrowth durations after mowing the swards. Animals always showed significant preference for one patch to the alternative. Variations among individuals were almost always very small. Regression analysis using a preference-currency model showed that animals perceived CP concentration and sward bulk density as rewards and selected patches having higher levels of both currencies. When there was a tradeoff between the two currencies, animals prioritized the currency that showed a greater variation between the patches. With respect to CP concentration, patch preference exhibited a pattern of overmatching, i.e. a patch was disproportionately preferred or avoided, depending on whether it provided higher or lower CP concentration than the alternative. The estimated degree of overmatching, i.e. sensitivity to the reward, was high (exponent = 9.6 ± 2.3). Comparison of the results with the literature suggests that animals grazing patchy tropical grass swards are more sensitive to quality than those grazing temperate grass swards. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. The definite integral of exp(t) expanded into infinite series included two sets of '1+(-1)' in the calculation of growth, and each of '1' and '-1' was described using the product of eight complex numbers. The present study was designed under hypotheses to leave complex numbers by the breakdown of product form in the complex representation of '1', where a minus sign was given to each of even-numbered pieces of complex number out of eight in order to conserve the value of '1'. This was followed by inserting them into the calculation of growth using exp(t). The results obtained were as follows. The value of '1' was constructed by the product of complex numbers that were different in part from those used in the primary description, which was caused by giving a minus sign to each of even-numbered (2, 4, 6, 8) pieces of complex number. The hypothetic breakdown of product form in the complex representation of '1' left zero, two or four sorts of complex numbers. The complex numbers were left in more pieces when a minus sign was given to each of the four pieces of complex number than when given to each of the two, six or eight pieces. Inserting complex numbers that were left into exp(t) did not influence the calculation of growth, suggesting that the definite integral of exp(t) expanded into infinite series was accompanied hypothetically by pair appearances and pair disappearances of complex numbers with their opposites.

Exponential functions with base e are often used for the analysis and estimation of some aspects in ruminant agriculture. The present study was designed to investigate a series of hypotheses influencing the appearance of exp(θ) from '0' using the concept of symmetry. The results obtained were as follows. There was a hypothetic appearance of '1+(-1)' from '0' if there were concepts of function, indefinite integral and symmetry. Then, '1+(-1)' was described using the product of complex numbers, in which this equality held for even when the variable took any value. Therefore, the variable θ in exp(±iθ) was replaced with ∓iθ. This changed exp(iθ) and exp(-iθ) into exp(±θ) and exp(∓θ), respectively, a transformation of variables from imaginary numbers into real numbers where the equality with '1+(-1)' was conserved in the new equation. The hypothetic breakdown of product from in the new equation left exp(±θ), for example. The property that the new equation held for all θ s might give a hypothetic case where θ took values in ascending order, namely an increase in θ. If this hypothetic property was inherited to exp(±θ) that was left, then the growth phenomenon described using the definite integral of exp(θ) might be allowed to occur with an increase in θ, but this speculation will require further investigation.

The present study was designed to investigate differences between '1' and '-1' in their hypothetic breakdown into complex numbers and application to definite integral of exp(t) expanded into infinite series. The results obtained were as follows. Complex numbers that were left by the hypothetic breakdown of product form in the complex representation of '1' and '-1' were classified into four groups according to properties of complex numbers; plus or minus, anti-clockwise or clockwise rotation on a circumference, hypothetic right-handed or left-handed spiral. Three groups or less showing an incomplete appearance of properties of complex numbers were derived from both '1' and '-1', but four groups that showed a complete appearance of all properties of them were derived from '1' only. This difference between '1' and '-1' might be due to the presence or absence of a minus sign. Complex numbers that were left by the hypothetic breakdown of product form in the complex representation of '1+(-1)' disappeared immediately in the calculation of growth using the definite integral of exp(t) expanded into infinite series.
