We have proposed and demonstrated a novel approach for generating high-energy extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) continuum radiation. When a two-color laser field consisting of a sub-10-fs fundamental and its parallel-polarized second harmonic was applied to high-order harmonic generation in argon, a continuum spectrum centered at 30 nm was successfully obtained with an energy as high as 10 nJ. This broadband emission indicates the possibility of generating intense single attosecond pulses in the XUV region. ©2006 Optical Society of America.

High-order harmonic generation is demonstrated to provide a sensitive way for an extensive study of dynamic processes in the field-free alignment of strong-field-induced molecular rotational wave packets. The time-dependent harmonic signal observed from field-free-aligned N2, O2, and CO2 has been found to include two sets of beat frequency for pairs of coherently populated rotational states. One of them is the well-known frequency component characterizing the field-free alignment of molecules, and the other is ascribed to the beat that arises from coherence embedded in the wave packet. We discuss the effect of each frequency component on the revival signal observed with the harmonic generation. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

We report high-order harmonic generation from field-free aligning molecules, of which time-dependent signals represent the revival structure of a rotational wave packet formed by intense fs laser pulses. The harmonic signals from aligned N2, O2and CO2molecules represent the characteristic behaviors depending on the molecular structures.

We report characteristic changes in reflectivity of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) films following irradiation of femtosecond laser pulses at laser fluence around the ablation threshold, where we have observed the formation of periodic nanostructure on the film surface and the modification of bonding structure from DLC to glassy carbon in our recent experiments. The experimental results have shown that the reflectivity change should be a reliable measure to monitor the experimental condition to produce the structural changes, being closely associated with the fundamental physical process to induce these phenomena.

We report a sensitive method using high-order harmonic generation to detect revival structures in fs-laser-induced, field free alignment of a molecular rotational wave packet. The revival structure is directly observed on the time-dependent harmonic signal produced with the pump-probe technique. The harmonic signals for N2and O2represent the characteristic behaviors depending on the molecular structure.
