We have demonstrated the photon-stimulated surface spectroscopy using broadband vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emissions from a laser-produced plasma, in which adsorbed atoms or molecules on material surfaces were to be desorbed and dissociated as a result of absorption of the wavelength-selected VUV photons. Desorbed and dissociated atoms or molecules were then detected by a mass spectrometer. Mass spectra of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride samples were obtained as a function of the irradiation wavelength. We have found sufficient characteristic differences of the mass spectra in the irradiation wavelength shorter than 200 nm in each sample. The desorption and dissociation of atoms or molecules from material surfaces depended on bond energy or molecular structure.

We have constructed the ultrashort pulse vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser system with an optical-fieldinducedionization (OFI) Ar2* amplifier. The amplification properties of the OFI Ar2* amplifier wereevaluated. A gain-length product of 0.84 was obtained by using multi-pass amplification with a VUVcavity. The gain-length product was increased up to 4.3 through the use of single-pass amplificationwith a VUV reflector and a hollow fiber. We optimized temporal and spatial overlaps between a VUVseed pulse generated as the 7th harmonic radiation and the OFI Ar2* amplifier. The optimal injectiontime of the seed pulse into the OFI Ar2* amplifier was 20 ns, which agreed with a peak time of Ar2*spontaneous emission. The spatially-resolved amplification of VUV seed pulses at 126 nm was observedin an OFI Ar2* amplifier. The maximum amplification ratio of 3.1 was observed, which corresponded toa gain value of 1.17 cm-1.

SUMMARY We observed that the emission intensity in the extreme and vacuum ultraviolet spectral regions using a laser-produced copper-tungsten alloy plasma was 1.3 times higher than when using a pure tungsten plasma. The enhancement of the emission intensity was explained by the difference of the Rosseland mean opacity of each plasma. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser systems for advanced applications such as micro and precise processing and photochemical reactions have been developed. We have been constructing a VUV-MOPA system to generate output energy of sub-mJ with a pulse width of sub-picosecond at the wavelength of 126 nm. A VUV seed pulse, generated by the 7th harmonics of a 882 nm Ti:Sapphire (TiS) laser was amplified by the Ar2* medium generated from an optical-field-induced ionization of Ar plasma pumped by the TiS laser. We achieved an amplification of 126 nm seed pulse by a factor of 2.6. Recently, we introduced a new 800 nm TiS laser. This laser was synchronized with the 882 nm TiS laser and the delay between these outputs was controllable. We also developed a photo-stimulated desorption spectroscopy method for surface analysis. A tunable incoherent VUV radia-tion obtained from a laser induced plasma was irradiated the samples and then desorbed species were analyzed by mass spectroscopy. This method enables analysis without sample heating and damaging.

We have observed the spatially-resolved optical amplification of femtosecond VUV pulses at 126 nm using an OFI Ar 2 * amplifier. The maximum amplification ratio of 2.57 was observed, which corresponded to the optical gain of 0.94 cm -1 . © 2013 IEEE.

We describe the direct measurement of actual transmittance of sodium samples with thickness of a 2 mm and 3 mm in a spectral range > 115 nm, resulting in > 50% transmittance of 3 mm thick solid and liquid sodium samples including transmission of a pair of the windows at the wavelength of 120 nm, giving an extinction coefficient of ~10 -6 to ~10 -7 which represents the sodium with a few cm thickness to be partially transparent for this wavelength. To confirm the measurement, we perform simple imaging experiments by the ultra-violet light passing through a 8 mm-thick sodium sample to illuminate a mesh as an object, resulting in obtaining a clear image. © 2013 Optical Society of America.
