Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a biocompatibility material. We have successfully obtained the nano-particles of hydroxyapatite by the underwater laser ablation. A sintered HAp ceramics target was made of commercially available HAp powder and it was placed in the purified water. The focused KrF excimer laser outputs were irradiated on the target surface at the fluence from 7 J/cm 2 to 23 J/cm 2 at the repetition rate of 100 Hz. We found that the amount of the particles increased in proportional to the laser fluence. However, the rate of content of sub-micron particles was became larger at the lower laser fluence. The particles made by 7J/cm 2 laser ablation were dispersing in the water for 12 hours after stopping the laser irradiation.

The amount of deposited debris on a silicon witness plate was determined by totalaser energy irradiated onto the target. Double laser pulse irradiation was not effective for deposited debris reduction. Incontrast, <I>in situ</I> low-temperature heating of the witness plate was effective inreducing the amount of deposited debris. Room-temperature photon processing using an incoherent vacuum ultraviolet excimer lamp at 126 nm deoxidized a deposited tin oxide layer

We have demonstrated auto-cleaning of deposited tin debris produced in a laser-plasma extreme ultraviolet (EUV) source by using a liquid jet target containing tin chloride solution. The use of double laser pulse irradiation improved the EUV conversion efficiency of 1.1%, which was 3.3 times as large as that obtained with single laser pulse irradiation. At an appropriate concentration of tin chloride, the amount of deposited debris was balanced out with that of sputtered and/or etched debris, resulting in a thickness of deposited debris less than 1 nm after 40∈000 laser pulse irradiations. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

We have demonstrated the generation of 5 fs, 0.5 TW pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate using a pulse compression technique in a hollow fiber with a pressure gradient. Owing to the excellent beam quality by passing through the hollow fiber, the beam after pulse compression could be focused to a nearly diffraction-limited spot size. We obtained for the first time a peak intensity as high as 5×10 18 W/cm 2 in the 2-cycle regime. ©2008 Optical Society of America.

Debris characteristics and their reduction have been investigated for a laser-produced plasma extreme ultraviolet source by using a colloidal jet target containing tin dioxide nanoparticles. The amounts of deposited debris on a witness plate were determined by total laser energy irradiated onto a target. In situ low-temperature (100 °C) heating of a plate was effective to reduce the amounts of deposited debris, since colloidal debris was easily vaporized by the heat. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We have been developing an ultrashort-pulse high-intensity vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser. Ultrashort VUV pulses at 126 nm have been produced in rare-gases by nonlinear wavelength conversion of an infrared Ti:sapphire laser at 882 nm. This pulse will be amplified inside an Ar 2 * amplifier excited by optical-field-induced ionization electrons. The amplification characteristics of the Ar 2 * amplifier has been improved by plasma channeling induced by a high-intensity plasma-initiating laser.
