We have developed intense vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation sources for advanced material processing, such as photochemical surface reactions and precise processing on a nanometer scale. We have constructed a new VUV laser system to generate sub-picosecond pulses at the wavelength of 126 nm. A seed VUV pulse was generated in Xe as the 7th harmonic of a 882-nm Ti:sapphire laser. The optimum conversion was achieved at the pressure of 1.2 Torr. The seed pulse will be amplified by the Ar 2 * media generated by an optical-field-induced ionization Ar plasma produced by the Ti:sapphire laser. We have obtained a gain coefficient of g=0.16 cm -1 . Our developing system will provide VUV ultra-short pulses with sub-μJ energy at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

We have improved the accuracy of the laser separation of stems from raisin samples on the basis of the degree of polarization of scattered light from raisins and stems. The specular reflection from wet raisins was minimized by regulating the degree of polarization of their scattered emissions. Wet and dry raisins were therefore judged as the same samples. Using these polarization characteristics, wet or dry raisins were separated from their stems in our laser inspection system. The detection error was reduced from 25 to 7% in our system. © 2010 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

We report the optical amplification characteristics of an optical-field-induced-ionization (OFI) Ar 2 * excimer vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) amplifier at 126 nm by using two experimental approaches. We have observed the amplification of OFI Ar 2 * excimer emission and evaluated the gain length product of 1.0 by using an optical cavity. We also achieved the gain length product of 5.0 by measuring the one pass amplification inside a hollow fiber with the length of 5 cm. The use of a hollow fiber was effective to guide the VUV emission and to extend a gain length. A small signal gain coefficient of 1.0 cm -1 was evaluated in both experimental approaches. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Subpicosecond vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pulses at the wavelength of 126 nm have been generated in rare gases as a result of the 7th harmonic radiation of a subpicosecond Ti:Sapphire laser oscillating at 882 nm. The VUV harmonic intensity was optimized in Xe at the pressure of 1.2 Torr. The behavior of the harmonic emission was qualitatively reproduced by the classical nonlinear optics. The increase of the harmonic intensity was limited by multiphoton ionization of Xe. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have been developing an ultra-short-pulsed vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser system for advanced applications such as micro and precise processing and photochemical reactions. We propose and construct a new VUV laser system to generate output energy of sub-mJ with a pulse width of sub-picosecond at the wavelength of 126 nm. A VUV seed pulse was generated in Xe gas at the pressure of 1.2 Torr with high conversion efficiency as the 7th harmonics of a 882 nm Ti:Sapphire laser. The Ar* 2 amplification medium was generated in an optical-field-induced ionized Ar plasma pumped by another 800 nm Ti:Sapphire laser with an amplification factor of 400. VUV output at 1 μJ in the sub-picosecond pulse will be obtained at a repetition rate of 1 kHz, leading to an average power of 1 mW at 126 nm. It will be useful VUV coherent source for applications of precise and micro laser processing.

We have observed the photo-chemical reaction process of organic molecules in gas phase induced by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation. We chose hydrocarbons that contain five carbons in a molecule as samples. To observe the wavelength dependence, three kinds of excimer lamps (Ar 2 *-126 nm, Kr 2 *-147 nm and Xe 2 *-172 nm) were used as light sources of the VUV radiation. Vaporized organic molecular compounds were irradiated by the VUV at a pressure of 12 Pa and detected by means of mass spectrometry. Change of the mass spectra with the irradiation period was measured. As a result, we found that different reaction rates were observed for the different compounds. In particular, 1-pentene and cyclopentane, which have the same molecular weight, have very different decomposition speeds for the irradiation of 172-nm radiation. The facts observed in this work are considered to be very promising for developing a technique to distinguish the targeted compound from others that have similar structures. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
