Green plant-origin electrophilic compounds are a newly recognized class of neuroprotective compounds that provide neuroprotection through activation of the Nrf2/ARE pathway. Electrophilic hydroquinones are of particular interest due to their ability to become electrophilic quinones upon auto-oxidation. Although green plants frequently produce a variety of electrophilic compounds, the detailed mechanisms of action of these compounds remain unknown. Here, we focused on the neuroprotective effects of 11,14-dihydroxy-8,11,13-abietariene (DA1), derived from a para-hydroquinone-type pro-electrophilic compound from the cryptoquinone. DA1 activated the Nrf2/ARE pathway, induced phase 2 enzymes, and increased glutathione, thus protecting neuronal cells from oxidative stress. DA1 had a very broad safety zone (199.41 fold) at least in our system. Thus, DA1 is a novel neuroprotective pro-electrophilic diterpene from green plant. © 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.

In our effort to find new whitening agents, we evaluated the effects of representative chalcones [4-hydroxyderricin (1), xanthoangelol (2), xanthoangelol H (3), deoxyxanthoangelol H (4), and deoxydihydroxanthoangelol H (5)] contained in the stem of Angelica keiskei on tyrosinase and melanin formation in B16 melanoma cells. In addition, the antioxidant effects of these chalcones in ORAC and DPPH assays were also determined. Interestingly, all chalcones (1-5) inhibit melanin formation in B16 melanoma cells, with low cytotoxicity.

Abstract: The hydrotalcite-like compound having ruthenium ions, cobalt ions, and iron ions in the Brucite layer and CO3 anions in the interlayer (Ru-Co-Fe-CO3HTLC) was found to be effective heterogeneous catalyst for the solvent-free oxidative coupling of 2-naphthols in aerobic conditions. The catalyst could be easily recovered and reused repeatedly for the reaction. © 2012 Bentham Science Publishers.

Chalcones bearing prenyl or geranyl groups from Angelica keiskei, such as 4-hydroxyderricin (1a), xanthoangelol (1e), xanthoangelol F (1f), xanthoangelol H (2), deoxyxanthoangelol H (3), and deoxydihydroxanthoangelol H (4) and their derivatives were synthesized. From the evaluation of antibacterial activity of the synthesized chalcones, 1a, isobavachalcone (1b), 1e, 1f, bavachalcone (5a), and broussochalcone B (5b) were found to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The creative program for chemical experiments in high school has been developed for five years by cooperation between Faculty of Engineering, University of Miyazaki and Miyakonojo Izumigaoka Senior High School through the science partnership program (SPP) planed by the Ministry of Education and Science. Practical experiments of the formation of organic gel and then evaluation of its properties were mainly selected for the program. Although the students learned the gel formation for the first time in this program, they felt great interest in exciting behavior of the gel. The useful educational materials to the high school students was established in the SPP.

Methyl 8,11,13-abietatriene-18-oate (1b) and 7-oxo-8,11,13-abietatrienes 10 and 15 were converted into 15-hydroperoxy-7-oxo-8,11,13-abietatrienes 13 and 16 by aerobic oxidation catalyzed by N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) combined with 2,2′-azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (V-70) at room temperature, and several abietane and podocarpane terpenes were synthesized from 13 and 16. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A biogas plant using livestock waste in which a methane fermentation process is applied is a useful facility for generating energy. The digestion liquid generated from the biogas plant as a residue has high potential for use as a crop fertilizer. However, high-density estrogens such as 17β-estradiol (E2) are included in livestock waste, and there is little information on the behavior of E2 in the digestion liquid. In this study, a survey of E2 concentration at each process in a biogas plant using livestock waste was carried out. In addition, the efficiencies of E2 removal from the digestion liquid by activated carbon adsorption and soil infiltration were examined. The total concentration of E2 in raw livestock waste was reduced to 2 μg/l after treatment, and the removal efficiency of E2 was about 80% for the plant. The methane fermentation process is important not only for the generation of methane but also for the removal of E2. The proportion of E2 conjugates comprising the total E2 concentration was 10% or less in all treated samples. In the plant, there is no likelihood of an increase in estrogen activity by the cleaving of E2 conjugates. By carrying out activated carbon adsorption to remove E2 from the digestion liquid, a large portion of E2 was removed from the digestion liquid, but an E2 concentration of 0.5 μg/l still remained in the treated digestion liquid. In contrast, it was possible to purify the digestion liquid to an E2 concentration of less than 0.002-0.011 μg/l by soil infiltration. It is thus possible to utilize the digestion liquid as a fertilizer without causing aquatic environmental pollution, but factors such as application rate, soil characteristics, and the E2 concentration of digestion liquid should be considered first. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Synthesis of alkyl β-glucosides such as p-anisyl β-D- glucopyranoside, phenethyl β-D-glucopyranoside, salidroside, cinnamyl β-D-glucopyranoside, citrusin D, 3-methylbutyl β-D-glucopyranoside, 3-methyl-2-butenyl β-Dglucopyranoside, geranyl β-D-glucopyranoside, perilloside A, and cyclohexyl β-D-glucopyranoside was accomplished in moderate yields by transglucosylation using hyperthermostable Pyrococcus furiosus β-glucosidase immobilized onto gelatin gel. Recovered immobilisate was reusable on successive runs in transglucosylation. © 2009 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.

Sawdusts of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) wood prepared before and after steam drying at 120°C in a kiln were extracted with n-hexane and ethyl acetate to give n-hexane extracts and ethyl acetate extracts. From gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the ethyl acetate extracts from woods before and after steam drying, the components of 4-epi-cubebol, cubebol, and 2,7(14),10-bis-abolatrien-1-ol-4-one, which existed in the raw sugi wood, were proved to disappear in the steam-dried wood. These components were also absent in the ethyl acetate extract of the steam-condensed solution of waste steam from the kiln outlet. When these three components were treated with 0.2% (v/v) acetic acid solution at 120°C, δ-cadinene was produced as a major product from both 4-epi-cubebol and cubebol by dehydration and cleavage of the cyclopropane ring, and cryptomerone from 2,7(14),10-bisabolatrien-1-ol-4- one by hydration. The chemical changes of the three components presumably occur during steam drying of the sugi wood. © 2008 The Japan Wood Research Society.
