Abstract ###From the quantitative analysis of steam-condensed solution which was obtained by the ###steam-dried treatment of Sugi wood at 90-120 ℃ (dry-bulb temperature) for 54-93 hours, the ###amounts of phenolics were found to be very small. The total extracts of organic solvent ###extractions (hexane and ethyl acetate) of steam-condensed solution were 0.16 w/v %. The ###adsorbate amount from steam-condensed solution using HP-20 adsorbent were the same as ###that of the solvent extract. The analysis of solvent extract and HP-20 adsorbate by capillary ###gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) revealed eight sesquiterpene compounds in ###the steam-condensed solution from Sugi wood.

Aerobic oxidation of aralkanes and α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds in the presence of a catalytic amount of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and 2,2′-Azobis(4-methoxy-2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (V-70) under 1 atmos. of oxygen at 30°C gave α-hydroperoxyaralkanes and γ-hydroperoxy-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, respectively. Hyperthermostable β-glucosidase from Pyrococcus furiosus was enclosed in gelatin gel by cross-linking with transglutaminase. Gelatin-immobilized β-glucosidase was considerably more thermostable than the native enzyme. Lyophilized immobilisate was stored at 90°C for 1 month without loss of activity. The immobilized β-glucosidase catalyzed transglucosylation of 5-phenylpentanol with 10.0 equivalent of cellobiose at pH 5.0 and 70°C for 12 h to afford 5-phenylpentyl β-D-glucopyranoside in 41% yield. The immobilized enzyme was more effective than the native one in transglucosylation. The gelatin-immobilized Pfu-β-glucosidase recovered from the first run of the reaction was reusable on successive runs.

Abstract ###The amounts of phenolics, flavanols and tannins in the steaming solution which was ###obtained by the streaming treatment of Sugi wood at 150 ℃ for 30-180 min were increased ###with a lengthening of the steaming time. The steaming solution was subjected to distillation ###under reduced pressure. Acetic acid, benzoic acid and pyrocatechol in the main distillate were ###determined by capillary gas chromatography (capillary GC). The dichloromethane extract of ###the main distillate was little compared with that of the steaming solution. The freeze-dried ###solid of the steaming solution was slightly soluble in hexane or ethyl acetate, and it was ###almost soluble in water.

Resin components of Sugi wood were isolated by silica gel column chromatography from the###toluene-hexane-soluble fraction of the methanol extract of the heartwood. On the other hand, after the heartwood has been directly extracted with hexane, the resin components were separated from the hexane extract. The isolated yields of β-sitosterol, sanndapacopimarlnal, sandaracopimarinol, and ferruginol from the hexane extract were nearly comparable to those from the toluene-hexane-soluble###fraction of the methanol extract. Ferruginol. isolated from Sugi wood was benzoylated followed by oxidation with Cr03 in acetic acid to give 12-0-benzoylsugiol, from which sugiol was obtained by methanolysis with anionic ion-exchange resin Amberlite IRA-400 in methanol. The oxidation of###ferruginol with 1.7 equiv. of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ) in methanol afforded###sugiol directly. The reaction of sugiol with 3.3 equiv. of DDQ followed by acetylation gave 12-0-acetyl-5,6-dehyqrosugiol, from which 5,6-dehydrosugiol was synthesized. 6,7-Dehydroferruginol was synthesized from 12-0-benzoylsugiol in 60% yield at 3 steps.

Aromatic ketones were synthesized by solventless Friedel-Crafts acylation of anisole, mesitylene, xylenes, and toluene with acetic acid and benzoic acid in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride by use of bismuth or scandium triflate at 30°C. Toluene, benzene, and even deactivated substrate such as chlorobenzene were benzoylated by the combined use of heptafluorobutyric anhydride and bismuth triflate at 75-100°C. The catalyst could be easily recovered and reused repeatedly for the reaction. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pork and beef containing NaCl were stored at 0 °C and changes in 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE) content were analyzed after 0, 3, 7 and 10 days. As an index of the lipid peroxidation level, malonaldehyde (MA) content was also analyzed. In pork, HNE content in samples with 2% NaCl increased (P<0.05) after 7 and 10 days of storage. In beef, HNE content in all samples increased during storage. The HNE content in samples with NaCl was higher than those of the control, after 7 and 10 days of storage, although the difference was not always significant. Judging from MA content, NaCl may act as a pro-oxidant in pork and beef. HNE may accumulate in pork and beef in which lipid peroxidation is progress. © 2003 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract ###Sugi sapwoods treated with aqueous acetic acid were carbonized at 400 ℃ for 1h under ###nitrogen gas to afford wood-vinegar, wood-tar and charcoal. Yield of the wood-vinegar was ###increased by treatment with aqueous acetic acid, and yields of the wood-tar and the charcoal ###were decreased. Eleven components in the wood-vinegar were determined by capillary gas ###chromatography (capillary GC). Amounts of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde and 2-###furaldehyde in the wood-vinegar were increased after the acid treatment, but amounts of ###carboxylic acids, phenols, pyrocatechol, guaiacols, and maltol were almost constant. ###A mixture of sugi sapwood and charcoal as an additive was carbonized at 400 ℃ for 1h ###under nitrogen gas. Amounts of acetic acid and propionic acid in the wood-vinegar were ###increased with the increase in charcoal amount. On the other hand, amounts of furans, maltol, ###phenols, pyrocatechol and guaiacols were decreased.

Abstract ###Sugi sapwood was carbonized at 300 ℃ for 1h under oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere. The ###relationship between the carbonization conditions and the chemical structure of the charcoal ###was investigated. The results were as follows : ###l) IR and 13C-NMR spectrum of the charcoal carbonized under oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere ###showed higher amount of carboxylic groups than the charcoal carbonized under nitrogen ###atmosphere. ###2) The charcoal carbonized under oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere adsorbed higher amount of ###alkali (NaOH, NaHCO3), benzylamine, ammonia gas, methylamine gas than charcoal ###carbonized under nitrogen atmosphere.
