Naturally occurring chalcones, namely 4-hydroxyderricin (1), xanthoangelol H (2), deoxyxanthoangelol H (3), and deoxydihydroxanthoangelol H (4), were first synthesized and evaluated for antibacterial activities. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Five flavonoids, Luteolin (1), Cynaroside (2), Isoquercitrin (3), Xanthoangelol (5) and 4-Hydroxyderricin (6) were isolated from the methanol extract of leaves of Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei Koidzumi) in Miyazaki. On the other hand, 1, 2 and Hyperoside (4) were isolated from the methanol extract of leaves of Ashitaba in Korea. The methanol extracts of Ashitaba leaves growing in Miyazaki and Korea were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Tea materials (used tea leaf-A, used tea leaf-B and leaf) were carbonized at 400 ?C for 1 h under nitrogen atmosphere. The material balance of carbonization products (charcoal, vinegar liquid and tar) prepared from each tea material was determined, respectively.### The vinegars from tea materials were all alkaline solutions (pH=8.1~9.1). The constituents of vinegar and tar were determined by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The vinegars from tea materials (used tea leaf-A and tea leaf) contained 57 compounds such as alcohols, carboxylic acids, furans, phenols, and nitrogen-contained compounds. The tars from tea materials (used tea leaf-A and tea leaf) contained 83 compounds such as alcohols, ketones, furans, phenols, alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogen-contained compounds.

Each part of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don), wood, inner bark, outer bark and leaf was carbonized at 400 ?C for 1h under nitrogen atmosphere. The material balance of carbonization products (charcoal, vinegar and tar) prepared from part of Sugi was determined, respectively.### The vinegars from part of Sugi were all acidic solutions (pH=2.2~3.3). The constituents of vinegar and tar were determined by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The vinegar from bark contained 46 compounds such as methanol, acetol, acetic acid, propanoic acid, 2-furaldehyde and pyrocatechol. The vinegar from leaf contained 44 compounds such as methanol, acetol, acetic acid, propanoic acid, pyrocatechol and hydroquinone. The tar from bark contained 63 compounds such as 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone, acetic acid, benzoic acid, pyrocatechol, m-cresol, 2,5-xylenol, guaiacol, (E)-isoeugenol and 1,6-anhydro-??-D-glucopyranose. The tar from leaf contained 63 compounds such as 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone, acetic acid, furfuryl alcohol, pyrocatechol, p-cresol, guaiacol, tridecane and 2-cyclopentenone.

A study on hydrophobicity of silicone rubber exposed to corona discharge

This paper describes the degradation of unfilled high temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (HTV-SR) resulting from corona discharges. In this study, corona stress was produced by a needle-plane electrode system, and the chemical and morphological structures at the surface layer of SR before and after corona discharge treatment were analyzed by using the techniques of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). respectively. It can be found that hydrophilic OH groups that are byproducts of ageing can be formed instead of hydrophobic CH3 groups on the surface of aged SR and the corona discharge plays an important role on the temporary loss of hydrophobicity. GC/MS results show that low molecular weight (LMW) silicone fluid disappeared after corona ageing. Also, the endothermic dent appears in the DTA profile because of the occurrence of OH groups. © 2006 IEEE.

From the analysis of drain which was obtained by the steam-dried treatment of Beimatsu (Pseudotsuga menziesii) wood at 80℃ for 15 days, the amounts of phenols, f1avanols and sugars were found to be large. The extracts of organic solvent extractions (hexane and ethyl acetate) of the drain were very small. The adsorbate amount from the drain using HP-20 adsorbent were larger than that of solvent extract. The analysis of solvent extract and HP-20 adsorbate by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) revealed nine compounds in the drain from Beimatsu wood.

Methanol extract of sawdust of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) heartwood was fractionated with toluene and n-hexane to give solvent-soluble and solvent-insoluble fractions. The n-hexane-soluble fraction showed the most inhibition activity among the fractions against phytopathogenic microorganisms, namely Fusarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Pythium splendens, and Ralstonia solanacearum. Sandaracopimarinol and ferruginol, isolated from the n-hexane-soluble fraction, showed moderate antifungal activity against the three fungi and strong antibacterial activity against R. solanacearum. The content of sandaracopimarinol (7.07 g/kg based on the dried sawdust) in the heartwood was about twice that of ferruginol. Sandaracopimarinol and ferruginol strongly inhibited the growth of Gram-positive bacteria but did not show inhibitory action against Gram-negative bacteria except for R. solanacearum. The antibacterial effect of sandaracopimarinol was first found in the present study and was stronger than that of ferruginol. © 2006 The Japan Wood Research Society.

Abstract ###The material balance of carbonization products of Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) ###inner bark, Ieaf, and sapwood at 400 ℃ was determined. The yield of charcoal from inner ###bark was the highest. The yield of wood-vinegar from sapwood was the highest. ###The pH of charcoal-dispersed aqueous solution from leaf, inner bark, and sapwood was ###10.35, 9.25, and 5.68, respectively. The ash content of the charcoal from leaf, inner bark, and ###sapwood was l0.70, 7.36,and 0.79 wt.%, respectively. The charcoal from sapwood showed the ###high adsorption capacity for ammonia gas. These results suggest that each ash content of ###charcoals affects the pH and the adsorptive activity.

The antimicrobial effect of the wood vinegar of C. japonica sapwood and its constituents was evaluated against Ralstonia solanacearum, Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum, and Pythium splendens. Phenols and guaiacols had a strong antimicrobial effect against four kinds of microorganisms, but methanol and acetic acid exhibited little or no antimicrobial activity. © The Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology.
