© 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. Obstacles such as ramps, steps and irregular floor surfaces are commonly encountered in homes, offices and other public spaces. These obstacles frequently limit the daily activities of people who use mobility aids. In this paper, a new offsetting mechanism for climbing a step while reducing the required horizontal climbing force and its step-climbing wheel prototype are proposed. Specifically, the proposed wheel allows to integrate into an existing personal assist devices. The proposed step-climbing wheel can help to reduce this limitation. The physical and mental burdens of caregivers and medical staff can also be reduced by making the users of the mechanism more self-sufficient. This paper provides details on this offsetting mechanism and its prototype. The mechanism is analyzed mathematically and its functionality is verified by experiments using a prototype.

© 2019 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. In this paper, we discuss a system that can recognize and classify stress based on speech. The system was built using a deep neural network (DNN) embedding to improve the baseline system (i-vector), called x-vector. The i-vector system usually requires Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) for dimension reduction, followed by Probability Linear Discriminant Analysis (PLDA) for scoring. In this work, the Generalized Discriminant Analysis (GDA) based Gaussianized cosine kernel and Joint-PLDA was used to replace the LDA and PLDA, respectively. The SUSAS database was used for training, testing, and enrollment data of our proposed system. We assessed our proposed system's effectiveness compared to the baseline system using equal error rate (EER). The evaluation and experiment results show that our proposed system outperforms the baseline system.

Copyright © 2019 Institute of Advanced Engineering and Science. All rights reserved. The switching operation based low dropout (LDO) regulator utilizing on-off control is presented. It consists of simple circuit elements which are comparator, some logic gates, switched capacitor and feedback circuit. In this study, we target the application to the power supply circuit for the analog front end (AFE) of bio-medical system (such as daily-used bio-monitoring devices) whose required maximum load current is 50 µA. In this paper, the design procedure of the proposed LDO has been clarified and actual circuit design using the procedure has been done. The proposed LDO has been evaluated by SPICE simulation using 1P 2M 0.6 µm CMOS process device parameters. From simulation results, we could confirm that the low quiescent current of 1 µA with the output ripple of 5 mVpp. The circuit area is 0.0173 mm2 in spite of using 0.6 µm design rules. The proposed circuit is suitable for adopting to the light load and low frequency applications.
