The energy spectrum of the 2H(d,pn) reaction at 0° at 270 MeV was obtained at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The spectrum in the kinematical region where the resulting pn pair has the relative energy smaller than ∼2 MeV was analyzed by plane-wave impulse approximation calculations assuming the configurations of final state interaction with s-wave. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The differential cross sections and the vector analyzing powers for the nd elastic scattering at En = 250 MeV have been measured for the study of the three-nucleon force (3NF) effects in the Coulomb-free system. To cover a wide angular region, the experiments were performed by using two different methods at the (n, p) facility and at the NTOF facility which constructed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). The results were compared with theoretical predictions of the Faddeev calculations based on the modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) forces with the three-nucleon force (3NF). The inclusion of 3NFs leads to a good description of the cross section except for the backward angles. The results were also compared with the theoretical predictions with relativistic corrections. The direct data-to-data comparison of the cross sections of the nd and pd was performed. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Measurements of deuteron-proton breakup reactions at 135 MeV/A have been made at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility, focusing on the specific coplanar configurations. The 116Cd(p,n) experiment at 300 MeV has been performed for deducing the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strengths B(GT-) in 116In. For the transition to the ground state, the B(GT-) value of 0.26 ± 0.02 is obtained. From this B(GT-) value and the B(GT+) value by a beta-decay experiment, the contribution of the intermediate ground state of 116In to the nuclear matrix element is deduced to be 0.070 ± 0.003. The B(GT-) value obtained herein is a factor of 8 less than that obtained from a previous (3He,t) measurement. This discrepancy, as well as differences in the distribution of low energy GT strength, and the width and peak energy of the GT giant resonance may be explained if the target used in the (3He,t) measurement is a Cd target with natural abundance. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The 12C(over(d, ⇒), α)10B *[2+] reaction at 0{ring operator} has been proposed as a new tool to calibrate the deuteron beam polarization at intermediate energies. The absolute values of the deuteron polarizations were extracted for the first time by using this reaction at 270 and 140 MeV deuteron energies. The analyzing powers for the over(d, ⇒)-p elastic scattering, which is used as a secondary reaction of a polarimetry, were determined by the new method. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-precision vector and tensor analyzing powers of elastic deuteron-proton (d + p) scattering have been measured at intermediate energies to investigate effects of three-nucleon forces. Angular distributions in the range of 70°-120° in the center-of mass frame for incident-deuteron energies Edlab = 130 and 180 MeV were obtained using the RIKEN facility. The beam polarization was unambiguously determined by measuring the 12C(d, α)10B(2+) reaction at 0°. Results of the measurements are compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon calculations. The present modeling of nucleon-nucleon forces and its extension to the three-nucleon system is not sufficient to describe the high-precision data consistently and requires, therefore, further investigation. © 2007 Società Italiana di Fisica and Springer-Verlag.

A high-energy deuteron beam polarimeter based on the d-p elastic scattering at backward angles has been constructed at Internal Target Station of Nuclotron at JINR. Cross sections for 13C(α, α′) reactions at Eα = 400 MeV have been measured to obtain the monopole and quadrupole transition strengths. The excitation strengths are compared with the shell-model predictions. It is suggested that the large monopole strengths observed for the 1/22- and 1/23- states in 13C are attributed to the cluster structure of those states. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

A new high-energy beam polarimeter is proposed for Nuclotron, which uses the Internal Target Station (ITS). This polarimeter based on a measurement of asymmetry for the d-p elastic scattering will allow one to measure simultaneously both vector and tensor components of deuteron beam polarization. For this purpose an analyzing powers measurement for the d-p elastic scattering at energies Td = 0.88-2 GeV is proposed. The precise measurements of the deuteron analyzing powers over the energy range Td = 300-2000 MeV can give an irreplaceable clue to the study of the spin dependence of three nucleon forces. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc. 2006.

RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility data on the tensor analyzing power T 20 of the dd → 3Hen and dd → 3Hp reactions at zero angle for deuteron kinetic energies of 140, 200, and 270 MeV are reported. The observed positive sign of T 20 clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D/S-wave ratio in the 3He and 3H wave functions in the energy range of the experiment. Data on T 20 for the 3Hen channel are in agreement with those for the 3Hp channel within the experimental errors. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2006.

Three precise measurements for elastic pd scattering at 135MeV/A have been performed with the three different experimental setups. The cross sections are described well by the theoretical predictions based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with three-nucleon forces. Relativistic Faddeev calculations show that relativistic effects are restricted to backward angles. This result supports the two measurements recently reported by RIKEN and contradicts the KVI data. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

We have constructed a new type of spin polarized solid proton target which can be operated under a low magnetic field of 0.08T and a high temperature of 100K. We have measured for the first time the polarization asymmetry of an unstable beam of 6He at an energy of 71MeV/u. We describe the neutron polarimeter NPOL3 for the measurement of polarization transfer observables Dij with a typical high resolution of ∼300 keV at Tn≃200MeV. The NPOL3 system consists of three planes of neutron detectors. The first two planes for neutron polarization analysis are made of 20 sets of one-dimensional position-sensitive plastic scintillation counters with a size of 100 cm × 10 cm × 5 cm, and they cover the area of 100×100cm2. The last plane for detecting doubly scattered neutrons or recoiled protons is made of the two-dimensional position-sensitive liquid scintillation counter with a size of 100cm×100cm×10cm. The effective analyzing powers Ay;eff and double scattering efficiencies εD.S. were measured by using the three kinds of polarized neutrons from the 2H(p→,n→)pp, 6Li(p→,n→)6Be(g.s.), and 12C(p→,n→) 12N(g.s.) reactions at Tp=198MeV. The performance of NPOL3 defined as εD.S.(Ay;eff)2 are similar to that of the Indiana Neutron POLarimeter by taking into account for the counter configuration difference between these two neutron polarimeters. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.

Double differential cross sections between 0°-12°were measured for the 90Zr(n, p) reaction at 293 MeV over a wide excitation energy range of 0-70 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique was applied to the present data as well as the previously obtained 90Zr(p, n) data to extract the Gamow-Teller (GT) component from the continuum. The GT quenching factor Q was derived by using the obtained total GT strengths. The result is Q=0.88±0.06, not including an overall normalization uncertainty in the GT unit cross section of 16%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have measured the neutron-deuteron (nd) elastic-scattering differential cross section at 95 MeV incident neutron energy, using both the Medley and the SCANDAL setups at TSL in Uppsala. The full angular distribution was covered by detecting recoil deuterons from thin CD2 targets, and the result was normalized to the neutron-proton (np) cross section. Recent theories predict that three-nucleon (3N) force effects, if present, would affect the cross section in the minimum region by about 30%. The results are compared with theoretical calculations and are well described if 3N forces are included. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.
