The experiment with polarized deuteron beam was performed at energies 140, 200 and 270 MeV at RIKEN, Japan, in December 2000. The high-momentum structure of the 3He, 3H and deuteron was investigated. For this purpose the angular dependence of the tensor and vector analyzing powers were measured for the reactions d + d → 3H + p and d + d → 3He + n. In this report the results on the tensor Axx, Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers at 270 MeV are presented. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

A new type of the spin polarized solid proton target has been constructed which can be operated under a low magnetic field of 0.08 T and a high temperature of 100 K. First polarization asymmetry measurement with an unstable beam of 6He with an energy of 71 MeV/u has been successfully carried out. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

The Gamow-Teller (GT) unit cross section, σ̌GT, is an essential quantity to deduce the GT transition strength, B(GT), from the (p, n) 0°cross section. (p, n) measurements at 200 and 300 MeV were performed using the Neutron Time-of-Flight (NTOF) facility at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). The σ̌GT values were determined, for the first time, for several nuclei in the region of A > 50 at E p = 200 and 300 MeV. A significant difference between the B(GT) values obtained by (p, n) and (3He, t) measurements was found. © 2005 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The data on the tensor analyzing power T 20 in the dd → 3He n and dd → 3H p reactions obtained at 140-270 and 140-200 MeV of the deuteron kinetic energy, respectively, and at zero degree were measured at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The observed positive sign of T 20 clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D/S wave ratios in the 3He and 3H in the energy domain of the measurements. The T 20 data for the 3He-n and 3H-p channels are in agreement within experimental accuracy. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The neutron-deuteron (nd) elastic scattering differential cross section has been measured at 95 MeV incident neutron energy. The neutron-proton (np) differential cross section has also been measured for normalization purposes. An inclusion of three-nucleon forces gives a considerable improvement in the theoretical description of the nd data in the angular region of the cross-section minimum. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. The high-momentum structure of the 3 He, 3 H and deuteron in the experiment with polarized deuteron beam performed at E d =270 MeV at RIKEN, Japan in December 2000, was investigated. For this purpose the angular dependence of the tensor and vector analyzing powers were measured for the reactions d + d→ 3 H + p and d + d→ 3 He + n. In this report the results on the tensor Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers are presented in the full angular range. The energy dependence of the tensor analyzing power T20 at a zero degree is also shown. The deuteron-to-proton polarization-transfer coefficients for d-p elastic scattering were precisely measured with an incoming deuteron energy of 135 MeV/nucleon at the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The data are compared to theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations with high-precision nucleon-nucleon forces combined with the current, most popular three-nucleon force (3NF) models: the 2π-exchange Tucson-Melbourne model, a modification thereof based on chiral symmetry, TM'(99), and the Urbana IX 3NF. Theory predicts large 3NF effects, especially in the angular range around the cross section minimum, predominantly for K xxy′ -K yyy′ (K xxy′ ,K yyy′ ), but the present data only partially concurs with the calculations. For the induced polarization, P y′ , the TM′(99) and Urbana IX 3NFs reproduce the data, but the Tucson-Melbourne 3NF fails to describe the data. For the polarization-transfer coefficients, K yy′ and K xzy′ , the predicted 3NF effects are in drastic disagreement with the data. These facts clearly reveal the defects of the 3NF models currently used.

Differential cross sections and a complete set of polarization observables have been measured for quasielastic (p→,n→) reactions on 12C and 40Ca at a bombarding energy of 345 MeV. The laboratory momentum transfers are qlab ≃ 1.2, 1.7, and 2.0 fm-1 for 12C and qlab≃ 1.7 fm -1 for 40Ca. In these momentum transfer regions, the isovector spin-longitudinal interaction is attractive where the one-pion exchange is dominant. The spin-longitudinal and spin-transverse polarized cross sections, IDq and IDp, are deduced. The theoretically expected enhancement in the spin-longitudinal mode is observed at q lab≃1.7 and 2.0 fm-1. The observed IDq is consistent with the pionic enhanced IDq evaluated in distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations employing random phase approximation (RPA) response functions. The enhanced IDq implies the existence of a precursor to pion condensation in nuclei. On the other hand, the theoretically predicted quenching in the spin-transverse mode is not observed. The observed IDp is not quenched, but rather enhanced relative to that predicted via the DWIA+RPA calculations. Two-step contributions are responsible in part for the enhancement of IDp.

Differential cross sections and a complete set of polarization observables have been measured in the quasielastic 2H(p,n) reaction at a bombarding energy of 345 MeV and laboratory scattering angles of 16°, 22°, and 27°. The data are compared with plane-wave impulse approximation calculations employing an optimal factorization approximation. The agreement between the experimental and theoretical results validates these approximations in the present momentum- and energy-transfer regions. The experimental spin-longitudinal and spin-transverse response functions, R L and RT, respectively, are deduced from the data. The obtained RT is consistent with that obtained from the quasielastic electron scattering. The theoretical calculations with the Reid soft core potential give good descriptions for RL and RT, whereas the latter is slightly underestimated around the quasielastic peak.

We have measured angular distributions of the differential cross-section, the analyzing power and all of the spin transfer coefficients Kyy′, Kxx′, Kzx′, Kxz′, and Kzz′, for the pd elastic scattering at 250 MeV. These are the first measurements of a complete set of proton polarization observables for pd elastic scattering at intermediate energies. The present data are compared with theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of the three-nucleon Faddeev equations and modern realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with three-nucleon forces (3NF), namely the Tucson-Melbourne (TM) 2π-exchange model, a modification thereof (TM) closer to chiral symmetry, and the Urbana IX model.

Dibaryons which have a very narrow decay width, called super-narrow dibaryons, are searched for by the p+d scattering at Ep = 295 MeV. The experiment was carried out at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics employing a two-arm magnetic spectrometer. A good mass resolution of 0.95 MeV and background free condition have been achieved. No resonance has been observed in the mass region of 1896-1914 MeV. The upper limits of the dibaryon production cross section have been determined.

To study the three-nucleon force (3NF) effects without ambiguities from the Coulomb effect, the differential cross sections and the vector analyzing powers for the n→d elastic scattering at En = 245 MeV have been measured at θcm = 85° - 180°. The data are compared to the results of Faddeev calculations using modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) forces with and without 3NF. Additionally we have a plan to extend our measurement to the forward angular region where the Coulomb effect is expected to be large. We carried out the test experiment and measured the differential cross sections at θcm = 21°.

We have measured the cross sections and analyzing powers Ay and Ayy for the elastic and inelastic scattering of deuterons from the 0+(g.s.), 2+(4.44 MeV), 3-(9.64 MeV), 1+(12.71 MeV), and 2-(18.3 MeV) states in 12C at an incident energy of 270 MeV. The data are compared with microscopic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations where the projectile-nucleon effective interaction is taken from the three-nucleon t-matrix given by rigorous Faddeev calculations presently available at intermediate energies. The agreement between theory and data compares well with that for the (p, p′) reactions at comparable incident energies/nucleon. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
