A kinematically complete quasifree (p,pn) experiment in inverse kinematics was performed to study the structure of the Borromean nucleus B17, which had long been considered to have a neutron halo. By analyzing the momentum distributions and exclusive cross sections, we obtained the spectroscopic factors for 1s1/2 and 0d5/2 orbitals, and a surprisingly small percentage of 9(2)% was determined for 1s1/2. Our finding of such a small 1s1/2 component and the halo features reported in prior experiments can be explained by the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum, revealing a definite but not dominant neutron halo in B17. The present work gives the smallest s- or p-orbital component among known nuclei exhibiting halo features and implies that the dominant occupation of s or p orbitals is not a prerequisite for the occurrence of a neutron halo.

The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on 8He(p,2p)7H{t+4 n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

Spectroscopy of 16B plays an essential role in understanding the halo structure in 17B, but very limited knowledge has so far been obtained. We have carried out a kinematically complete measurement on the spectroscopy of 16B by using quasi-free (p,pn) reaction on 17B. The level scheme of 16B up to 5 MeV was made clear for the first time.

Our research goal is to measure the cross section of the 7Be(d, p) reaction to find a solution for the cosmological the 7Li problem, which is an overestimation of the primordial 7Li abundance in the standard Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model. We developed a method to produce an unstable 7Be target to measure the reaction in normal kinematics in a high-resolution measurement. We performed an experiment to produce the 7Be target and also to measure the cross section of the 7Be(d, p)8Be reaction with the produced 7Be target at the tandem facility, Kobe University. A 2.36 MeV proton beam irradiated a Li target to transmute 7Li particles to 7Be particles via the 7Li(p, n)7Be reaction. We produced 2.6 1013 7Be particles in the target after two days' proton irradiation. After the target production, the beam ion was changed to deuterons with energies of 0.6, 1.0, and 1.6 MeV to measure the 7Be(d, p) reaction. The outgoing protons were measured by two ΔE-E silicon telescopes placed at 30 and 45 . We report the preliminary results of this experiment, including the 7Be(d, p) cross section.

The formation of a dineutron in the Li11 nucleus is found to be localized to the surface region. The experiment measured the intrinsic momentum of the struck neutron in Li11 via the (p,pn) knockout reaction at 246 MeV/nucleon. The correlation angle between the two neutrons is, for the first time, measured as a function of the intrinsic neutron momentum. A comparison with reaction calculations reveals the localization of the dineutron at r∼3.6 fm. The results also support the density dependence of dineutron formation as deduced from Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for nuclear matter.

The dipole polarizability of stable even-mass tin isotopes Sn was extracted from inelastic proton scattering experiments at 295 MeV under very forward angles performed at RCNP. Predictions from energy density functionals cannot account for the present data and the polarizability of Pb simultaneously. The evolution of the polarizabilities in neighboring isotopes indicates a kink at Sn while all model results show a nearly linear increase with mass number after inclusion of pairing corrections. 112,114,116,118,120,124 208 120

Background: There is renewed interest in electric dipole strength distributions for a variety of reasons including the extraction of the dipole polarizability related to properties of the symmetry energy and a measure for the neutron skin thickness, understanding the structure of low-energy E1 strength in nuclei with neutron excess, and establishing the systematics of the isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR). Inelastic proton scattering at energies of a few hundred MeV and very forward angles including 0â has been established as a tool for the study of electric and magnetic dipole strength distributions in nuclei. Purpose: The present work aims at a systematic investigation of the electric and magnetic dipole strength distributions in the chain of stable even-mass tin isotopes. Methods: Inelastic proton scattering experiments were performed at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, with a 295-MeV beam covering laboratory angles 0â-6â and excitation energies 6-22 MeV. Cross sections due to E1 and M1 excitations were extracted with a multipole decomposition analysis (MDA) and then converted to reduced transition probabilities with the "virtual photon method"for E1 and the "unit cross section method"for M1 excitations, respectively. Including a theory-aided correction for the high-excitation-energy region not covered experimentally, the electric dipole polarizability was determined from the E1 strength distributions. Results: Total photoabsorption cross sections derived from the E1 and M1 strength distributions show significant differences compared to those from previous (γ,xn) experiments in the energy region of the IVGDR. The widths of the IVGDR deduced from the present data with a Lorentz parametrization show an approximately constant value of about 4.5 MeV in contrast to the large variations between isotopes observed in previous work. The IVGDR centroid energies are in good correspondence to expectations from empirical systematics of their mass dependence. Furthermore, a study of the dependence of the IVGDR energies on bulk matter properties is presented. The E1 strengths below neutron threshold show fair agreement with results from (γ,γ) experiments on Sn112,116,120,124 in the energy region between 6 and 7 MeV, where also isoscalar E1 strength was found for Sn124. At higher excitation energies, large differences are observed, pointing to a different nature of the excited states with small ground-state branching ratios. The isovector spin-M1 strengths exhibit a broad distribution between 6 and 12 MeV in all studied nuclei. Conclusions: The present results contribute to the solution of a variety of nuclear structure problems including the systematics of the energy and width of the IVGDR, the structure of low-energy E1 strength in nuclei, new constraints to energy density functionals (EDFs) aiming at a systematic description of the dipole polarizability across the nuclear chart, from which properties of the symmetry energy can be derived, and the systematics of the isovector spin-M1 strength in heavy nuclei.

The spallation and fragmentation reactions of Xe136 induced by proton, deuteron, and carbon targets at 168 MeV/nucleon were studied at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory via the inverse kinematics technique. A wide range of isotopic distributions of the reaction cross sections has been obtained and systematically analyzed by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) including dynamical and intranuclear cascade processes plus evaporation process, the semi-empirical parametrization for residue cross sections in spallation reactions (SPACS) and empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross sections (EPAX), and the deuteron-induced reaction analysis code system (DEURACS) incorporating the deuteron breakup effect. The carbon target has exhibited strong potential to produce light-mass isotopes far away from the projectile, in comparison to proton and deuteron targets. This may be attributed to the possible higher excitation energies of the prefragment induced by heavier target. It is demonstrated that the deuteron target has advantages to produce isotopic chains very close to the projectile and also the neutron-rich nuclei in other isotopic chains far away from the projectile, due basically to its structure property and the effect of the breakup neutron in the peripheral collision processes. The proton target has the advantage of being able to produce isotopes produced via charge-pickup reactions in comparison to other targets. The prediction powers of various calculation codes are examined with respective to the experimental isotopic distributions. The target and energy dependences of the produced mass distributions are also discussed.

The structure of a neutron-rich F25 nucleus is investigated by a quasifree (p,2p) knockout reaction at 270A MeV in inverse kinematics. The sum of spectroscopic factors of π0d5/2 orbital is found to be 1.0±0.3. However, the spectroscopic factor with residual O24 nucleus being in the ground state is found to be only 0.36±0.13, while those in the excited state is 0.65±0.25. The result shows that the O24 core of F25 nucleus significantly differs from a free O24 nucleus, and the core consists of ∼35% O24g.s.. and ∼65% excited O24. The result may infer that the addition of the 0d5/2 proton considerably changes neutron structure in F25 from that in O24, which could be a possible mechanism responsible for the oxygen dripline anomaly.

© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. The differential cross sections of the elastic Nd scattering at the energy below 150 MeV can be well reproduced by introducing 3NF in the Faddeev calculations based on modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions. On the other hand, some spin-observables, and the differential cross sections of Nd elastic and inelastic scatterings at over 250 MeV show large discrepancies between the data and the Faddeev calculations with 3NF. It indicates the presence of the missing features of the three nucleon systems. For the systematic study about these large discrepancies at higher energy regions, we measured the differential cross sections and the vector analyzing power for the inclusive and exclusive breakup reaction at 170 and 250 MeV. The experiments were carried out at RCNP. The data were compared with the results of the Faddeev calculations with and without the 3NF.

The tetraneutron has been drawing the attention of the nuclear physics community for decades, but a firm conclusion on its existence and properties is still far from being reached despite many experimental and theoretical efforts. New measurements have recently been performed at RIBF with the SAMURAI spectrometer by applying complementary reaction probes, which will help to pin down the properties of this four-neutron system.

Dineutron decay is a forefront topic in nuclear structure that still lacks a firm experimental claim. The spontaneous emission of a dineutron should be favored in nuclei that are unbound with respect to two-neutron emission but bound with respect to single-neutron emission. A very interesting candidate can be found by adding two neutrons to the most neutron-rich Beryllium isotope, (formula presented)Be, a well-known 2n-halo nucleus. The intriguing nature of the phenomenon has motivated recent theoretical calculations and a new experimental campaign at RIKEN RIBF. In this work, the decay properties of (formula presented)Be and the structure of (formula presented)Be have been probed via the proton-knockout reaction from a (formula presented)B beam.
