The angular distribution of the differential cross sections for proton elastic scattering from 132Sn at 196–210MeV/nucleon was successfully measured over a momentum transfer range of 0.80–2.1fm-1. Using a relativistic impulse approximation, the root-mean-square matter radius of 132Sn was extracted as 4.758+0.023<inf>-0.024</inf>fm, which was compared with the state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. Combined with the charge radius measured at ISOLDE, there are no theoretical calculations consistent with both matter and charge radii within the experimental errors.

We present the measured data of the proton analyzing power A<inf>y</inf> in polarized proton elastic scattering of an unpolarized 3He target and the 3He analyzing power A<inf>0y</inf> in unpolarized proton scattering of a polarized 3He target at three intermediate energies: 50, approximately 65, and 100 MeV. The experimental results are compared with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on the realistic charge dependent (CD) Bonn nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential. Large discrepancies are observed for both A<inf>y</inf> and A<inf>0y</inf> at the angles where the observables exhibit a minimum and a maximum at almost all three measured energies. The examination for discrepancies has been extended to the lower incident energy of 8.5 MeV, revealing that differences exist from 8.5 to 100 MeV for A<inf>y</inf>. The Δ-isobar effects derived using the NN+NΔ coupled-channel approach do not account for the A<inf>y</inf> and A<inf>0y</inf> data at the three investigated energies. We therefore estimated the effects of the irreducible three-body forces associated with the CD Bonn+Δ-isobar calculations. We also analyzed the p-3He elastic scattering amplitudes. The results obtained suggest that A<inf>y</inf> and A<inf>0y</inf> for p-3He elastic scattering at intermediate energies are insensitive to the 2π-exchange-type three-nucleon forces (3NFs), but enhance nuclear interactions, including the 3NFs masked in nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering.

A new experimental method to search for the double Gamow–Teller giant resonance using the double charge exchange ($^{12}$C, $^{12}$Be(0$^{+}_{2}$)) reaction is proposed and applied, for the first time, to a ${}^{48}$Ca target at 250 MeV/nucleon using a $^{12}$C primary beam at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. The events with double isospin- and spin-flip in ${}^{48}$Ca were selected by measuring decay $\gamma$-rays from ${}^{12}$Be(0$^{+}_{2}$). A forward-peaking component in the measured double-differential cross sections was observed with an integrated $0^\circ$ cross section of $1.33 \pm 0.12$ μb/sr in the excitation energy region below 34 MeV in ${}^{48}$Ti. Reaction analyses based on distorted-wave Born approximation calculations and the multipole decomposition based thereon indicate that $\sim$40% of the forward-peaking component originates from the double Gamow–Teller transitions. The transition strength of the double Gamow–Teller transition is evaluated from the extracted forward-peaking cross section.
DOI: 10.1093/ptep/ptae174

In this work we investigate the two-neutron decay of 13Li and of the excited states of 11Li populated via one-proton removal from 14Be and 12Be, respectively. A phenomenological model is used to describe the decay of 11Li and 13Li. While the first one displays important sequential components, the second one appears dominated by the direct two-neutron decay. A microscopic three-body model is used to extract information on the spatial configuration of the emitted neutrons before the decay and shows that the average distance between the neutrons increases going from 11Li to 13Li.

To search for low-energy resonant structures in isospin T=3/2 three-body systems, we have performed the experiments H3(t,He3)3n and He3(He3,t)3p at intermediate energies. For the 3n experiment, we have newly developed a thick Ti-H3 target that has the largest tritium thickness among targets of this type ever made. The 3n experiment for the first time covered the momentum-transfer region as low as 15 MeV/c, which provides ideal conditions for producing fragile systems. However, in the excitation-energy spectra we obtained, we did not observe any distinct peak structures. This is in sharp contrast to tetraneutron spectra. The distributions of the 3n and 3p spectra are found to be similar, except for the displacement in energy due to Coulomb repulsion. Comparisons with theoretical calculations suggest that three-body correlations exist in the 3n and 3p systems, although not enough to produce a resonant peak.

We present the measured spin correlation coefficient Cy,y for p-3He elastic scattering at 100 MeV at the angles θc.m.=46.9∘–149.2∘ in the center of mass system. The experiment was performed using a 100 MeV polarized proton beam in conjunction with the polarized 3He target. Proton beams were injected to the target, and scattered protons were detected by using E-ΔE detectors which consisted of plastic and NaI(Tl) scintillators. The data are compared with rigorous numerical calculations based on realistic NN potentials as well as with the Δ-isobar excitation. The obtained results indicate that the Cy,y expands the knowledge of the nuclear interactions with Δ-isobar or those including 3NFs that are masked in nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering.

The structure and decay of the most neutron-rich beryllium isotope, Be16, has been investigated following proton knockout from a high-energy B17 beam. Two relatively narrow resonances were observed for the first time, with energies of 0.84(3) and 2.15(5) MeV above the two-neutron decay threshold and widths of 0.32(8) and 0.95(15) MeV, respectively. These were assigned to be the ground (Jπ=0+) and first excited (2+) state, with Ex=1.31(6) MeV. The mass excess of Be16 was thus deduced to be 56.93(13) MeV, some 0.5 MeV more bound than the only previous measurement. Both states were observed to decay by direct two-neutron emission. Calculations incorporating the evolution of the wave function during the decay as a genuine three-body process reproduced the principal characteristics of the neutron-neutron energy spectra for both levels, indicating that the ground state exhibits a strong spatially compact dineutron component, while the 2+ level presents a far more diffuse neutron-neutron distribution.

We have measured the differential cross section and analyzing power for (p, 2p) reactions that lead to discrete states of residual nuclei at an incident energy of 197 MeV for five kinds of target nuclei, 12C, 16O, 40,48Ca, and 90Zr. The data are compared with distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations using two kinds of global optical potentials. The spectroscopic factors obtained from these calculations agree with those determined in (e, e′p) studies within 20%, except for one orbital of the 90Zr nucleus where the distortion effect is much greater than that for the other orbitals of 90Zr and for other target nuclei. We also observed a clear and visibly distinct j-dependence in the analyzing power.

We developed an N2 gas scintillation counter as a time-of-flight counter for particle identification of radioactive isotope beams. Radiation damage, which often becomes a problem for high-intensity heavy ion beams, can be prevented by a continuous flow of N2 gas. The scintillator, with a volume of 60 mm × 60 mm × 100 mm, was filled with N2 gas at a pressure of approximately 100 kPa. Photons were detected using photomultiplier tubes attached to both sides of the vessel. The main emission wavelength of photons produced in the detector was 300–400 nm. Performance tests confirmed that the detector had sufficient detection efficiency, intrinsic time resolution, and short decay time. Additionally, the detector was demonstrated to be effective for particle identification.

The dineutron correlation is systematically studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline, 11Li, 14Be and 17B, via the (p,pn) knockout reaction measured at the RIBF facility in RIKEN. For the three nuclei, the correlation angle between the valence neutrons is found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which can be associated to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction that the formation of the dineutron is universal in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

We present the measured spin correlation coefficient Cy,y for p-He3 elastic scattering at 100 MeV at the angles θc.m.=46.9∘-149.2∘ in the center-of-mass system. The Cy,y data and the existing cross section data are compared with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. Large differences are seen in the regime around the cross section minimum for both observables. The Δ-isobar effects estimated by the NN+NΔ coupled-channels approach are small for the cross section. Meanwhile, in Cy,y, the Δ-isobar effects improve the agreement with the data. The analysis of the p-He3 elastic scattering amplitudes implies the necessity of three-nucleon forces (3NFs) that enhance the vector components in the amplitudes. The obtained results indicate that the spin correlation coefficient Cy,y expands the knowledge of the nuclear interactions with the Δ isobar or those including 3NFs that are masked in nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering.

We present a precise measurement of 3He analyzing powers for p-3He elastic scattering with the polarized 3He target at 50, 65, 70, and 100 MeV. The data at 65 and 70 MeV are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the modern nucleon-nucleon potentials. Large discrepancies between the data and the predictions are clearly seen at the angles where the 3He analyzing power takes the minimum and maximum values, which are not explained by Δ-isobar effects.

The tetraneutron has attracted the attention of nuclear physicists during the past decades, but there is still no unambiguous confirmation of its existence or non-existence. A new experiment based on 8He(p, 2p)7H{t+4n} reaction, with direct detection of the four neutrons, has been carried out at RIBF, which can hopefully help to draw a definite conclusion on the tetraneutron system.

We searched for the α condensed state in 13C by measuring the α inelastic scattering at Eα = 388MeV at forward angles including 0?. We performed a distorted-wave Born approximation calculation with the single-folding potential and multipole decomposition analysis to determine the isoscalar transition strengths in 13C.We found a bump structure around Ex = 12.5MeV due to the isoscalar monopole (IS0) transition.A peak-fit analysis suggested that this bump consisted of several 1/2- states. We propose that this bump is due to the mirror state of the 13.5MeV state in 13N, which dominantly decays to the α condensed state in 12C. It was speculated that the 1/2- states around Ex = 12.5MeV were candidates for the α condensed state, but the 3α +n orthogonality condition model suggests that the α condensed state is unlikely to emerge as the negative parity states. We also found two 1/2+ or 3/2+ states at Ex = 14.5 and 16.1MeV excited with the isoscalar dipole (IS1) strengths. We suggest that the 16.1MeV state is a possible candidate for the α condensed state predicted by the cluster model calculations on the basis of the good correspondence between the experimental and calculated level structures. However, the theoretical IS1 transition strength for this state is significantly smaller than the measured value. Further experimental information is strongly desired to establish the α condensed state in 13C.

We conducted the coincidence measurement of α particles inelastically scattered from 20Ne at 0° and decay charged particles in order to search for the alpha-particle condensed state. We compared the measured excitation-energy spectrum and decay branching ratio with the statistical-decay-model calculations, and found that the newly observed states at Ex=23.6, 21.8, and 21.2 MeV in 20Ne are strongly coupled to a candidate for the 4α condensed state in 16O. This result presents the first strong evidence that these states are the candidates for the 5α condensed state.

Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the He3 binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the NN potentials and rather small Δ-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that p-He3 scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering.
