© 2015 Published by American Physical Society. The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, π-γ→π-γ, at center-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction π-Ni→π-γNi, which is initiated by 190 GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasireal photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, Q2 < 0.0015(GeV/c)2. From a sample of 63000 events, the pion electric polarizability is determined to be απ=(2.0±0.6stat±0.7syst)×10-4fm3 under the assumption απ=-βπ, which relates the electric and magnetic dipole polarizabilities. It is the most precise measurement of this fundamental low-energy parameter of strong interaction that has been addressed since long by various methods with conflicting outcomes. While this result is in tension with previous dedicated measurements, it is found in agreement with the expectation from chiral perturbation theory. An additional measurement replacing pions by muons, for which the cross-section behavior is unambiguously known, was performed for an independent estimate of the systematic uncertainty.

© 2014 The Authors. Exclusive production of ηπ - and η ' π - has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π - beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c 2 . A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2, 4, 6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a 2 (1320) and a 4 (2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η ' π - over ηπ - is found for the L=1, 3, 5 waves, which carry non-qq- quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c 2 in η ' π - and at 1.4 GeV/c 2 in ηπ - , the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

© 2015. Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

A measurement of the azimuthal asymmetry in dihadron production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised proton (NH 3 ) targets is presented. They provide independent access to the transversity distribution functions through the measurement of the Collins asymmetry in single hadron production. The data were taken in the year 2010 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a 160 GeV/c muon beam of the CERN SPS, increasing by a factor of about four the overall statistics with respect to the previously published data taken in the year 2007. The measured sizeable asymmetry is in good agreement with the published data. An approximate equality of the Collins asymmetry and the dihadron asymmetry is observed, suggesting a common physical mechanism in the underlying fragmentation. © 2014 The Authors.

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS longitudinally polarised muon beam at 160GeV/c and a 6 LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations cos φh , cos 2 φh and sin φh were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables x, z or pTh and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the cos φh and cos 2 φh modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons. © 2014 CERN for the benefit of the COMPASS Collaboration.

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons ω and φ is measured with a 190GeV/c proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable xF of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on xF and on the invariant mass M p V of the system formed by fast proton pfast and vector meson V is discussed in terms of diffractive production of pfast V resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element ρ00 of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on xF and on M p V are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to ω production which are absent in the case of the φ meson. Removing the low-mass M p V resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of xF . © 2014 CERN for the benefit of the COMPASS Collaboration.

A 2.5 m long liquid hydrogen target has been developed for the COMPASS experiment at CERN to investigate the nucleon spin structure via the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) process. To recognize exclusive DVCS events, produced photons and slow protons need to be detected. In order to do so, the material budget around the target has to be minimal. A 0.125 mm thick Kapton® target cell and a 1 mm thick carbon fiber vacuum chamber with a Mylar® window have been constructed and tested. Finally, the target system was successfully employed during the DVCS pilot run in COMPASS at the end of 2012. The objective of this paper is to give a detailed description of this newly developed liquid hydrogen target apparatus. © 2014 The Authors.

Exclusive production of < sup > ρ0 < /sup > mesons was studied at the COMPASS experiment by scattering 160GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured as a function of < sup > Q2 < /sup > , < inf > x B j < /inf > , or pT2. The sin < inf > φS < /inf > asymmetry is found to be -0.019 ± 0.008(stat) ± 0.003(syst). All other asymmetries are also found to be of small magnitude and consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties. Very recent calculations using a GPD-based model agree well with the present results. The data is interpreted as evidence for the existence of chiral-odd, transverse generalized parton distributions. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the reaction π̄γ → π̄π̄π + embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions scattering in the Coulomb field of a lead target, π̄Pb → π̄π̄π + Pb. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at momentum transfer below 0.001 (GeV/c) 2 . Using a partial-wave analysis the amplitudes and relative phases of the a 2 (1320) and π 2 (1670) mesons have been extracted, and the Coulomb and the diffractive contributions have been disentangled. Measuring absolute production cross sections we have determined the radiative width of the a 2 (1320) to be Γ 0 (a 2 (1320) → πγ) = (358 ± 6 stat ± 42 syst ) keV. As the first measurement, Γ 0 (π 2 (1670) → πγ) = (181 ± 11 stat ± 27 syst )keV · (BR f2π /BR/ f2π ) is obtained for the radiative width of the π 2 (1670), where in this analysis the branching ratio BRf f2π PDG = 0.56 has been used. We compare these values to previous measurements and theoretical predictions. © Societa Italiana di Fisica/Springer-Verlag 2014.
