Arrays of limited streamer tubes of the Iarocci type were deployed in our experiment at CERN as part of a forward muon detector system with provisions for the beam to pass through the center of each panel in the array. A total of 16 4 m×4 m panels were assembled with inductive readout strips on both sides of each panel. An active feedback system was deployed to regulate the high voltage to the streamer tubes to insure a constant efficiency for minimum ionizing particles. The arrays were operated in this environment for over five years of data taking. Streamer tube track-reconstruction efficiencies and tube replacement rates are reported.

We present the results of the spin asymmetries A 1 of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic region extending down to x=6×10 -5 and Q 2 =0.01 GeV 2 . The data were taken with a dedicated low x trigger, which required hadron detection in addition to the scattered muon, so as to reduce the background at low x. The results complement our previous measurements and the two sets are consistent in the overlap region. No significant spin effects are found in the newly explored region. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Experimental data on the differential cross section for the reaction 12 C(J, p)X at a primary momentum of 9 GeV/c and the proton emission angle of 85 mrad and on its tensor (A yy ) and vector (A y ) analyzing powers are presented. The differential cross section is satisfactorily described within the relativistic model of hard scattering by using conventional deuteron wave functions, while the behavior of the tensor analyzing power A yy , which remains positive up to the maximal value of the detected-proton momentum, is at odds with the predictions of this model. Nonzero values of the vector analyzing power A y suggest that the spin-dependent component of the NN-scattering amplitude plays a pronounced role in the mechanism of this reaction. Data on the differential cross section and the parameters A yy and A y have also been obtained for the reaction 12 C(d, d)X in the missing-mass region around 2.2 GeV/c 2 .

A prototype of a scintillating fiber hodoscope was constructed with multi-cladding scintillating fibers and a multi anode photomultiplier (H6568, HAMAMTSU). The hodoscope has a seven structure of a scintillating fiber with 0.5 mm in diameter and stacked in closest packing in order to improve its efficiency and time resolution. The hodoscope has been tested using a proton beam. The time resolution of about 700 ps in FWHM has been obtained.

The performance of scintillating fiber detectors with 2m long light guides was investigated for COMPASS experiment, using a 450 MeV/c electron beam. Prototypes consisting of 0.5 mm diameter fibers (Kuraray SCSF-38 single-cladding) with the position-sensitive photomultipliers H6568 (Hamamatsu) were constructed for the test. The time resolution of σ approx. 430 ps was obtained with about 10 photoelectrons for the prototype of 10-layers structure.

The tensor analyzing power T 20 of the reaction d + A → π (0°) + X has been measured in the fragmentation of 9 GeV tensor polarized deuterons into pions with momenta from 3.5 to 5.3 GeV/c on hydrogen, beryllium and carbon targets. This kinematic range corresponds to the region of cumulative hadron production with the cumulative variable x c from 1.08 to 1.76. The values of T 20 have been found to be small and consistent with positive values. This contradicts the predictions based on a direct mechanism assuming NN collision between a high momentum nucleon in the deuteron and a target nucleon (NN → NNπ). © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. The 1996 data taking of the SMC experiment used polarized protons to measure the spin-dependent structure function g 1 of the proton. Three liters of solid granular ammonia were irradiated at the Bonn electron linac in order to create the paramagnetic radicals which are needed for polarizing the protons. Proton polarizations of ± (90 ± 2.5)% were routinely reached. An analysis based on a theoretical line shape for spin-1 systems with large quadrupolar broadening was developed which allowed the nitrogen polarization in the ammonia to be determined with a 10% relative error. The measured quadrupolar coupling constant of 14 N agrees well with earlier extrapolated values. The polarization of the nitrogen nuclei was measured as a function of the proton polarization in order to provide a test of the equal spin temperature (EST) hypothesis. It was found to be closely valid under the dynamic nuclear polarization conditions with which the protons are polarized. Large deviations from EST could be induced by cross relaxing the proton and nitrogen spin systems at low fields. Nitrogen polarizations up to 40% were reached by these means. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function g 1 including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%.

We present the final results of the spin asymmetries A 1 and the spin structure functions g 1 of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic range 0.0008 < x < 0.7 and 0.2 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 . For the determination of A 1 , in addition to the usual method which employs inclusive scattering events and includes a large radiative background at low x, we use a new method which minimizes the radiative background by selecting events with at least one hadron as well as a muon in the final state. We find that this hadron method gives smaller errors for x < 0.02, so it is combined with the usual method to provide the optimal set of results.
